Barta and Ferentz are going to get crucified

That's fine. I'm not going to read any of those columns, because they aren't worth my time. That being said, I'm sure they're focused on the real issue - 13 players in the hospital - as opposed to showing fake outrage that Iowa didn't put on the right face for the public.

But in a world that rips Jay Cutler for not looking tough enough on the sidelines, style does matter over substance.

Shada, you are very correct in what the jist of the substance of the media reports is about. Way over-reaction here about the lack of Ferentz or Barta being there. I would of expected Barta there, with Ferentz on the road; The players are not dying, or in ICU, they are being monitored, as it takes a couple of days to make sure there is no kidney failure. That would be the only reason I see KF coming back immediately. The players are in good care. The media wanted to know what happened immediately; they got it. Even with a parents perspective and a Medical specialist.

Barta, could be there to show leadership, but as pointed out, sometimes news gets handled and disseminated by personnel a step or two down in the hierarchy. Media got their pressor - program continues to monitor and analyze - program moves on. The wheels don't stop in an ongoing process.

[The bears made the Playoffs, but Cutler didn't disappoint, as his egotistical character flaw is still in tact]

I can't beleive what I just read. What in the world is Iowa doing. KF is still on the road, I'm sorry but that is just downright unacceptable.. Wow!!

These players have been in the hospital for 3 days and we don't know if Kirk's seen them in person or not...what's unacceptable? Not being in front of a camera to say he can't say anything?

As the athletic director of a major football program, yes his job is to be there and answer questions regarding the situation. If nothing else it is to show that the head of the athletic department is taking the issue seriously and making sure the safety of his players is a top priority.

Within 24 hours of the first press release, every major news media outlet across the country has covered this situation, at least one national outlet has called for a coach or multiple coaches to be fired.

Gary not attending this paints a horrible perception. If nothing else he needed to be up there to show he is in control and will make sure all proper steps are being taken.

No excuse for this and it falls squarely on Gary Barta. Step up and be a LEADER GARY!

Ding ding ding ding!!!! Couldn't agree more. He better have a good excuse for not being there (btw, if something else has surfaced since I wasn't able to read through the entire thread due to time constraints).

Thank you for helping diffuse some people here.. peole need to just take a breath.

Your right Shane it's no big deal. Iowa handled it like all major programs would.

I try...we all have questions, but they weren't going to be answered today anyway. I have more of a beef with the university scheduling this presser when there's nothing more to know about the situation than we already did. There's going to be a reason why 12 guys suddenly couldn't handle a workout that countless others have...and Kirk and Gary weren't going to know the answer to it yet anyway. The sports department is guilty of nothing here, but having a presser today.

Outside of the state of Iowa and certain media hacks that cover the Big Ten and college football, NOBODY GIVES A $HIT! I work with a ton of college sports fans from all over the country. One guy made a remark about seeing the story on the bottom crawler on ESPN and asked what all the hub bub was about. Everyone is focused on 1. Super Bowl 2. College hoops 3. Recruiting.

Let's all calm down. Freaking out isn't going to do a damn thing. It sure as hell didn't help with the DJK situation now didn't it? Look, we all love our Hawks, but let's try to stay rational until The Captain gets back and we see another press conference. (Which I'm sure we will.)

Really then why is the National Media tweeting and writing about it.

"The National Media" I am wringing my hands now. LOL. Dennis Dodd? Adam Rittenberg? Stewie Mandel? Please! These guys are paid to jump on stuff like this. People who actually follow sports don't care. Unless they are Hawk, Clone, or certain Big Ten fans. I hope you guys don't lose any sleep over this.

Our PR is always poor. Ferentz hardly ever says anything of any substance, he tells dumb one liners, and lies. Barta is a tool. That press conference after the DJK and Robinson incident was a complete joke. What has Barta ever done to make any sort of positive meaningfull contribution to our athletic department? Maybe credit him some with the Carver renovation I guess.
This is a shamefull move and they'll get what they deserve.

Wow...people on this board can get really ridiculous with limited information. "Ferentz is going to get crucified...that uncaring bastard". You people need to get a life. Trust me, no one cares more than Kirk Ferentz that his players were admitted to a hospital. Trust me, no one cares less than Kirk Ferentz if the national media or local media make a spectacle of it...as long as he knows his players are recovering and are going to be fine. The perception of what happened, he can't control, and I'd be willing to bet he really doesn't care. The press/media is paid to do what they do, direct traffic to the blogs/sites, sell newspapers, and get a radio audience. They are all running now.

There is still limited information as they don't know the link between the 12 players...this has NEVER happened before, and they have done the workouts for years. HMMM...maybe there is something about this situation that is unique? They don't know what it is yet...so we should wait for them to figure it out.

Poggi's dad said he has spoken to KF 4 to 5 times in the past two days...as I'm sure he has done for every other parent of a hospitalized player. KF is talking to the parents, not the media. What does that tell you? He's not trying to control anything other than what matters to him...the relationship with his players and their families.

People need to get over the fact that KF wasn't at a press conference. The real issue is why the Iowa people put the damn thing on in the first place. Crucify the moron who made that decision.

You do realize that you can die from lots of things actually. I don't know any of these players personally so I have no idea how bad they were/are feeling, etc.

I do know that Poggi was posting on FB about the workouts, puke, etc. My gut reaction: If someone is feeling so horrible, in such tremendous pain and near their deathbed, they probably aren't stopping to post on Facebook.

While the condition is nothing to be taken lightly, I suspect when all is understood and perhaps more is communicated, we might just find that none were ever in any life-threatening status. We'll see what more comes available over the coming days.

You do realize that the players could have died from that right?

In talking with my friend who works in the program, he mentioned that this is being made out to be a WAY bigger deal through the media then it really is. I do not have specifics for he would/could not provide them. I also do not have any room to gauge what that exactly meant. Just sharing what someone in the know had to say about this all...

Nothing new under the sun.
