Bama vs Southern Cal. 2016....umm

Let me start out by saying, I absolutely cannot stand USC. Maybe its because of the orange bowl, or the fact that theyre cheaters, but I have been so happy that theyve been irrelevant the past how many years. That being said, why did Bama agree to play them in the cowboys kickoff classic to open the 2016 season? All USC has now is its name, yes theyre just now recovering from their sanctions, but this makes no sense. Is this USC's attempt to become relevant again? And whats the point of bama agreeing to this game? Two big NAMES, but itll be a 30 point beat down.

Perfect game for Bama.

Nearly guaranteed win over a household name. Why wouldn't they agree to this game?

With there being an emphasis on SOS now, how can Bama schedule a team who is still rebuilding, and expect that to help their SOS. I see the money reasons though, but I dont think teams can get away with playing for TV revenue, without it affecting their SOS.

Slow down there, Berg. USC has a bunch of talent, and an incoming coach that is almost certainly better than Kiffin was. A 30 point beat down? Not likely.

USC will stay where it is. Sark isn't that good. Washington is a place where a coach can achieve greatness - Don James showed that. Sark didn't get it done. And he won't get it done at USC regardless of talent.

Interesting that so many are counting out USC. They've been a 10-win team two of the past 3 years, and they were a fringe national title-calibar team in 2011, though they were ineligible for post season play. All that with Lane Kiffin and Ed Orgeron as they coaches. Sark may not have shown greatness in Seattle, but with USC's current talent and recruiting grounds, I think they'll be a regular playoff contender the next few years. Alabama-USC should be a great game between two great programs.

You realize this game won't be played for another two years, right? USC will be fine by then. Hell, if a 10-win season and a win over #5 Stanford is "still rebuilding", then that's good enough.

That was from 1975-1992. Stanford had two winning seasons in that time frame. Oregon had six winning seasons, four of which were 6-win seasons. Wazzu had 6 winning seasons. Long story short, the northwest really sucked during James' time at Washington. Now Oregon and Stanford are elite national programs, and Washington is no longer king in that part of the country. Wazzu still sucks, though.

Washington won Rose Bowls and beat Nebraska a few times and good Miami and Florida teams during that era.

My point wasn't that they padded their record against weak teams. But Oregon and Stanford are now prime landing spots for regional recruits who might have gone to Washington 30 years ago.

Comparing coaches who are so far apart in eras doesn't work. The game isn't the same today as it was in James' day.

That was also the stretch of Ted Tollner, Larry Smith, return of Robo-Coach, and Paul Hackett at USC.

Sark came to UW with an empty cupboard and got things going in the right direction.

That being said, with Mora still at UCLA, and Rich Rod in the desert, there is a bit more competition for LA talent for USC than there was during the Carroll years. That being said, who would want to have to ride a bus for an hour to their stadium or live amongst a town of these people?

USC will bounce back under its new coach. Lots of talent on the West Coast. Of course, now UCLA is back ... Stanford, Oregon ... Pac 12 is up and coming and could be the one to end the SEC strangehold on the rest of college football ... USC/Bama ... I would tune in...

Caar, you're right on about most of that post, including the "down years" of Hackett et al, and the fact that Sark got UW going in the right direction. You're also right about there being competition for LA and California talent -- of which there is a lot. And before I go to where you're wrong, you're absolutely right to question why anyone would go to Arizona. I was at that game in the Desert. The people and the campus were miserable, and it was hot and bleak and nasty. Blecch.

But you can't say the same about UCLA. The place is idyllic. Yeah, the students have to ride across town to get to the stadium, but the players get to play in an iconic stadium for a coach that appears to know how to win. The 86,000+ kids that applied to go to UCLA this year can't all be wrong. Don't get me wrong, I loved my time in Iowa City and I bleed black and gold, but if someone would have dangled UCLA in front of me when I was that age, it would have been hard to turn down.[

I believe this game has been dubbed "The Integrity Bowl"
I like it, I can see the small print under The Integrity Bowl, "if you ain't cheatin, you ain't tryin"

USC will be good. They is just too much talent, and USC has too many resources not to get good players in the program. They just had a joke of a coach and had to rebuild after scholarship losses. I think this will be a fun game to watch, even if you hate both teams.
