Some people are just not into material things. My son is like that. He doesn't care if he drives an old car or lives in an apartment rather than a house. He wants to dress nice, do some traveling, hang out with friends and play his guitar. I'm glad he's not into having a lot of money, he's a teacher so that will probably prevent him from making tons of money, on the other hand I've always told him that being happy and content in life is better than having money and being miserable. He must have gotten it from me because that's the opposite of his mother.

I hate to see a person walk away from a lucrative career and do something tragic and depressing like start applying to grad school. That is when you know a 20-something has given up on life.
