Bad performance. Disappointed

I was totally pizzed off during the game. Good thing is they won. Like people have been saying, and I even posted a few days ago, most teams will lose a BB game or two they shouldn't. At least that didn't happen, and this performance changes nothing in my thinking for what type of year overall they will have.

Barring injuries, this will be a much better basketball team in February/march than they are now.

A couple quotes from Fran's post game that stand out.

"We played a team that had a terrific game plan. They executed it to perfection."
"They banked a couple of threes in. We gave them some loose ball recoveries that they laid in. Those kinds of plays, you know, demoralize a team when you’re trying to come back."
"Dev? He started off missing a couple. He never seemed to get cooking."

To sum it up... We played a team that executed their game plan to perfection, had a few bounces go their way and our best player had an off night and we fought back to hang on to get a win.

I'm not concerned.

This is the noncnference season and other posters have suggested (I hope they're right because I like the philosophy) that Fran schedules his noncon to expose weaknesses. Now, we can look for improvement on the areas that concerned us all, last night; namely intensity, rebounding, shooting, things like that. We saw improvement from Augie to UNCW. Now, let's see what the next game brings. If they can survive mistakes and win in the noncon and if they actually learn from the mistakes, then they will have experience to draw from during the conference season.

No need to be concerned. This was great for us. Get tested a bit, but come off with a W. Expectations have been much higher, a lot of excitement around the program. Hopefully, this was enough of a scare to get everyone focused. Nothing is going to be given, go out and earn it

We've lost similar games like this in the past.

South Dakota State and Campbell come to mind.

We won this one. We got outplayed for most of it but held our composure and won it at the free-throw line.

Keep watching the box scores during the out of conference season. Same thing's going to happen to many of the big boys. Some will lose.

What's not to like??

That South Dakota State team made it to back to back NCAA tournaments and the PG is now starting for the Milwaukee Bucks. They had a nice couple of years

The three things that really bothered me.

Jabbing for rebounds with bad timing, instead of finding your man and boxing out.
How Iowa didn't adjust to the effect screens Omaha were using that left wide open threes.
Really sloppy with the ball on fast breaks and transition passes.

The shooting I can get over, but I really hope Iowa can stop leaving the three open all day.

A lot of coaches do not even teach boxing out anymore. It's more of check your man and go get the ball.

I have a hard time with Big taking the ball down the floor. Get it to your guards, better handlers, quicker, and make better decisions on the other end

That was not a "good" basketball team. We made them look good.

How long have you been following BB? There are tons of examples when lesser teams upset a great team. They were fortunate that they hit most of their 3's in the first half and seemed to get to every loose ball. That was still a very good squad that should compete for their league championship. Give them credit for not laying down and taking the pay check for showing up. I have faith in this team. If you can't enjoy watching this team ,then I can't imagine what life was like for you during the Lick years.

I didn't like a lot of what I saw either but Iowa is a better team then how they preformed last night. It's better to get these type of showings out of the way now I say.

Iowa needs to be focused each and every night and after how they played yesterday, I am sure Fran is going to drill that into their heads. Take nothing for granted and play all out every second of every game.

This will be a teaching moment for Iowa.

UNO out hustled us. Plain and simple. They and their coach knew what it was going to take, to come into CHA and steal a win. They had to get the loose balls and rebounds with more effort than we were going to apply and they needed to shoot well from the floor. They did just that. You have to give their coach some credit. I'm glad we weathered the storm and pulled out the win in the end. That was a good basketball team we played.

They were prepared and we were not. Period. They even practiced banking threes to throw us off, as BigD mentioned. These games will occur every now and then. Hopefully only once this season, but now the team should know not to underestimate anyone. This was a tough team and we actually were fortunate to win but our experience finally appeared late in the second half. It we weren't so adept at shooting free throws, we would have lost. Devyn had an extremely off game. Whoever was guarding him was like a second skin. Bottom line we won, and I am personally pleased that I was not in the half time locker room.....

UNO was fast, physical, and shot well and these are characteristics of a team that is generally hard to beat.

Didn't read what Aaron say about Fran not reading the riot act at halftime.....

Good, he let the team use their talent and experience take over and they gradually, slowly pulled ahead and emerged victorious.....

This was probably one of the better coaching efforts by Fran at Iowa. He was making adjustments during the game to figure what worked. Two years ago against Campbell he never found the right combination.

I wasn't terribly shocked, we knew that our guards often have off nights shooting and are not good defenders. Teams that take a lot of 3s will give us fits if they are hitting them, thankfully UNO only shot 29% from 3 but considering they took twice as many as us, it hurt. UNO was smart, they avoided the paint and abused our guards. Expect to see that all season.

Gosh that number seems low for as many as they hit or at least felt like they hit.

UNO will probably go on to win their division and make a run in the NCAA tourney. This was a VERY GOOD team.

Felt the same way. I was surprised by the actual percentage. But they were hitting them in big moments...kept chucking up run stoppers. Made it feel like they never missed, I guess.
