Backup QB

You realize the WIDTH of a football field is 53 yards, right? You don't want a strong armed QB so he can chuck it 80 yards in the air vertically. You want a strong armed QB so that when you're on one hash or the other and need to throw the out route with velocity, you can do that and not worry about it getting picked off....see Rudock circa 2014 vs Northern Illinois for evidence.

Not to mention, Iowa is roughly middle of the pack in terms of depth of target, certainly not the bottom of the B1G:

I would say we take most of our deep-shots off of PA constraint plays. eg CJB to Tevaun in the 2015 B1GCG.

Why do we care if a QB has a strong arm? We never throw the ball farther than 15 yards down the field. Mansell could do that and still not be a statue behind the offensive line.
you should never use the word “never”

I’m married. I know.

Of course we throw the ball 15+ yds downfield.
Sometimes Nate does that on 8 yd routes all by himself

(okay, cheap joke at NS’s expense — I really like the kid. I’ve met him and have a nephew that played on the same HS FB team. Says he is a really good guy.)

In a hypothetical National Championship game who do you want out there? Brad Banks or a Chuck Long?

I’ll take Long as long as Harmon isn’t in the backfield. If Harmon is in the game then I will take Banks. Need to move the ball on the ground instead of dropping the ball on the ground.

I’ll take Harmon (and Long) all day long. Best Iowa RB in my lifetime. Watched the 1v2 matchup of Iowa-Mich. Dude was running over people and around people.

His last (horrible) game at Iowa does not a career make.

Ronnie Harmon only drops the ball when Whitey Bulger is betting the under.

I think he's about 6' 8 . Heard that he threw a football from the warf of the SF shipyards and it landed on Alcatraz but bounced into the bay....still that's pretty good. another time he threw the ball over the golden gate bridge from the deck of a ship and then caught it when the ship steamed below

He was on shark watch, sending those devils to death's door with pinpoint highly volatile strikes.....

He was an awesome running back who some thought had to pay off some debts. I personally try to give everyone the benefit of a doubt.

He had quite a colorful personality from people that were into the bar seen in Iowa City. He used to roam around the bars in Iowa City dressed like a pimp, with a beautiful white girl in each arm. He loved attention and was very loud in public. Actually a very likable personality.

He should have invested in some stick-em before the Rose Bowl.

Help me out, what does "constraint" refer to in this context?
So a constraint play is basically the one you hold in your pocket until the perfect timing.

That's running zone right 10-15 times in the first half, to the point that the safeties are biting hard to stop the run, and even succeeding a few times. So, you get into a situation where your tendencies say you're going to run said play, for example 2nd and short, 1st and 10, or so on, and you hit them with the PA designed off of said play, and bam, you should have a winner.

It's literally just setting up a certain play to a T. It's not something you're going to run 4-5 times per game, but once or twice.

His personality got toned down quite a bit when he and Quinn Early had a bit of a "confrontation"

My brother and one of my close friends used to frequent the bars in Iowa City. One night they were in a bar and several Iowa wrestlers were in there. In walks the twin towers Stokes and Payne and a couple of their friends. Something happened and suddenly the basketball players and the wrestlers got into an argument and it escalated into a fist fight. Because the basketball players had a huge advantage in arm reach Greg and Mike way laid the wrestlers, lol.

I would say that even with the arm advantage those two never caught me as guys I would want to mess around with. Maye it is just me but watching sports from the 70s, 80s and even early 90s the toughness is unmatched and is something that doesn't exist at the same level today.

In my opinion there are very few players today that would be able to go back and play in those eras while many of the guys from back then could play and would play well just because the mental toughness and drive was there. I think a lot of the societal issues have really toned things down as well as the coaching.

If anyone watched the ESPN docu-series the other night after The Miami game it was really interesting talking about where football came from in terms of physicality and the attitudes of coaches. I can't even imagine if some of these players today had to go back in time for one practice and be under Woody Hayes.
