Backup QB

A bit of an over reaction, like usual. I don't know if there is a lot of separation between the two at this point. We will see whether either see much playing time this year. If you put in a second string quarterback while the game isn't totally out of reach, than you have some risk of an opponent clawing their way back into the game. That is the sort of risk Ferentz has not been willing to take very often in the past.

This seems like a silly thing to worry about, if the coach’s think Petras is better than great. How could we as obsessive fans even possibly know who was better from our houses with no exposure to daily practice.

Plus, I’m sure mansell is a good dude, but if he transfers, good for him. Iowa has Stanley this year, petras, Alex Padilla who was offered by Georgia, and hogan to come. QB is stocked.

Besides, shouldn’t we go back to what’s important? Fighting about Oliver Martin?

Competition is a great thing and we looked stacked at QB for the foreseeable future. Having O'Keefe on board as QB coach also make this one area I'm not concerned about.

I could never figure out why he didn’t go to the Big 12 anyway. Running QBs don’t thrive in the Big Ten other than at OSU, and even then the advantage is debatable because their OL is so talented and deep to begin with.

He’s a square peg in a round hole in some respects, and I can’t imagine trying to possibly have two different schemes ready to go. In my opinion you should find QBs that naturally fit your system instead of changing your system to fit a QB.

The other thing I don’t like about run threat quarterbacks if that the potential for injury is just ridiculously high. Even if it’s not a season ender all those nagging injuries pile up by the end of the season which is the worst time to have them. I’d bet my house Nebraska is going to run into that problem with Martinez before all is said and done.

Huh? Seriously? Only OSU?

Starting w IA...Wisky, M, Mn, IU. IL, Nebby, PSU all have had one or more successful dual threats that come to mind.

Mansell intrigued me. I am not sure he is a running QB but more of a scrambling QB. I thought he had more of Drew Tate characteristics in him. It just means KF and his staff like the big arm and down field capabilities of Petras more.

You really aren’t going to choose this battle to fight...are you? Because some of the schools you threw out there. Most specifically, our own, would be the furthest from the conversation.

What does that have to do with anything? There gsve been numerous successful dual threat quarterbacks in the big. So why are you chosing this one?

Juice Williams could have played for any Big. You want to throw out Seattles Super Bowl QB? Randle El....you would tutn him down? Mc Sorely? Robinson?

Have you seen him throw? Ball doesn’t snap like Nate. Not great feet either.
Yes, I’ve seen his HS tape. He looks good.

Nate’s snap doesn’t matter when receivers open by a stride have to fall to their knees to catch a ball at their ankles, or stop their route to catch a ball a yard behind them, or start their trot early because a ball is 6’ over their head.

Have you watched Nate back-pedal from the center? Dude looks like a Clydesdale backing up a wagon. Sometimes it goes smooth; sometimes it’s a chore.

I like Nate. The accuracy weakness Happens too often with Nate being a P5 QB.
And from a Jon Miller’s own words, his saw a video of this camp’s practice — still happening.

Anyway, back to #2. I like Mansell’s scrambling, persona; I like Petras’ arm, quick decisions and accuracy.

Look, the fact that Petras overtook the back-up from last year and is now the back-up this year as a redshirt freshmen should be viewed as significant. If he was even with Mansel, I think Mansel keeps the job or they stick with the dreaded "OR." This kid looks like the real deal to me.

And, to whoever said he does not have Stanley's zip, first, that is not much of a criticism given that Stanley has a cannon for an arm, and second, I disagree. Petras too has a BIG arm that could translate to the next level. And, the reports coming out of camp where his feet and pocket presence were well above his experience level.

Barring injury, Petras is the starting QB next year. Color me excited.

Lots of other things to consider though besides just the arm. How is he able to process information, does he understand the playbook, how do the other players react to his leadership. While I am not saying that Mansell is bad at these but maybe Petras is ahead in some and Mansell in others. Barring any injuries or bad/excellent play by Stanley these guys won't see the field much anyway. I hope Petras can get some field time this year because Mansell has some and it will only help both guys. Competition is never bad especially at the QB position.

Agreed. Heard a rumor that he may have the best pure arm talent Iowa has ever seen.

Good to see Petra's making strides, his tape is impressive.

While everyone has there gripes about stanelys inaccuracy, you would be hard pressed to find another school that would bench a QB with his kind of numbers. Maybe Nick saban? It's pretty rare. Stanely is gifted but has some weaknesses. It would take quite a bit to give the man on deck a shot still.

Mansell could still make a comeback in the offseason, but I've been excited about Petras from the day he committed. He put up video game stats in high school and just about every throw he makes looks like it was exactly as he intended. Then he came here and has been killing it in the open practices doing the same thing. I think it's all just knowledge acquisition at this point, and it sounds like he has a really good handle on that as well. The only thing I'm nervous about is breaking in a non-mobile QB with 2 new tackles, 2 new guards, and a new TE next year. I know we have a tradition of developing good linemen and some of the reserves are very talented, but still...

This is great news. Hopefully our QB for the next 6 years looks like this:

Stanley ‘19
Petras ‘20-‘22
Hogan ‘23-24’
