Backup center next year?

The tallest recruit we have coming next year is 6'7 or 6'8? What happens if Woody gets injured or in foul trouble? This team might not win 14 games next year.

That's the thought that's keeping me up at night these days, besides the obvious inconsistency in the back court.

Plus, Woody isn't going to be able to play 40 mpg. He's going to need a rest from time to time. Who do we go to when he's not in the game?

I thought Wagner was listed at 6'7", but the three other recruits coming in I believe are 6'5" or less. Wagner also listed at around 190 pounds, a similar build to Uhl. I'm concerned about our post presence next year.

We play the 5 best players. If that means 3 guard 2 forwards then we just have to play differently. Nothing in the rules that says you have to have a "center" on the floor. For you older posters you will remember the great Maury Jogh team that took UCLA and Alcindor to a 1 point loss in the tournament with noone bigger than 6'5" that played much

You could probably get by with this if you're a damn good shooting team. I don't know if Iowa will be a damn good shooting team. I will say that Indiana appears to be doing well with only 1 big, but they are a good shooting team. We'll have to play a lot of zone D.

Many teams in college have been going away from traditional centers. Some coaches been taking athleticism over height. Wagner can board, but as a freshmen he may not be quite ready yet. Gabe having redshirted would have been real nice now.

From what we saw yesterday, Uthoff would be the 5 man/middle man in a 2-3 zone when Woody is out next season.

Hopefully Fran finds a big for that last scholarship. getting a 5th year transfer or a JUCO are probably most likely since there probably are not very many capable hs seniors left at this point. Then get at least one or more bigs in the 2016 class since Woody will be graduating.

You are almost correct, toward the end of that year Al Williams at about 6'5" or 6'6" started with Willie Wise and Dolph Pulliam on the front line. At the start of the season Rick Wanamaker who was a very athletic 6' 8 was starter at center. Sometimes the starter at center depended on how big the other team because Gary Odom also was taller and got time at center.

By the end of the year Al Williams was playing great and could really sky but Wanamaker played a lot. Maury John had a great team and I know because I was a Jr in high school in Des Moines and saw most of their home games that year.

Vets Auditorium on the night Drake clobbered Louisville was the loudest basketball game I have ever been at and I have been at Carver when it is loud.
Drake beat a really good Iowa team that had tied for the Big 10 title in '68 and '70.

This is where Kyle Meyer might have come in handy.

correct, Meyer would have been the backup

Woody will be in a lot of foul trouble next year if he plays 30 minutes, unless he cleans up the stupid fouls like a little push on a screen, etc

Nicholas Baer could do the job well too. Don't they still have one scholarship left? The 6'9" center/forward from Clinton could be a good option.

Ikenna Okwarabizie could be a possibility. I don't know much about him other than he played in Sioux City last year and is at Tyler CC this year.

I saw both Baer and Ernst play in high school they seem to be good players. Iowa was fortunate to get Nicholas Baer as a perfered walk on. Brady Ernst will take a scholarship offer.

Ernst has no ratings. He isn't ranked on Rivals or 247Sports. His highest offer is from Bowling Green or UNI. He has no offer from Iowa (nor should he receive one). He is listed as 6'8".

Baer was a low 2-star, and I had to dig to find that rating. He is a preferred walk on, but didn't really get offers for anywhere else. He is listed at 6'7".

Neither is going to be backing up Woody with anything resembling effectiveness.

I agree with JG10Hawk that we should go hard after Ikenna Okwarabizie, who we have offered. While he wasn't rated high coming out of HS, he's doing well at Tyler CC. And at 6'10" and 250 lbs, he can be an effective backup for Woody,

You guys can talk about small ball all you want, but if we had tried that against Purdue the other day, their center tandom would have combined for 50 points and 25 rebounds. We badly need another big guy in next years class, not only to play back up minuyes as a freshman, but to get ready to start as a soph.

Some sources including the Clinton game program list Brady Ernst at 6'9". He is not skinny either. I also like it that local players get considered.

I like it that local players get considered as well. But they need to be worth consideration. Ernst is doing well in the MAC. I've watched a number of games in the MAC over the past 20-25 years, and that's all I can say about Ernst. I saw Ricky Davis play several times and on his worst nights he was doing well. He absolutely tore up the MAC. No one matched up with him. Of course, his attitude was horrible; but talent-wise there was no one close.

I don't think Ernst is going to be offered by Iowa - he may decide to walk on, but that's up to him. He's a good player for Iowa HS. That won't necessarily make him a B1G player.

My guess is Fran will be looking to get a big or at least a physical guy this spring. But only if he can help. Otherwise bank the scholarship and try to get 25 minutes out of Woodbury and run like hell when he's on the bench. Adjust the style of play to the talent on the roster.

And I will go on record right now that I believe we will win more than 14 games next year if we stand pat with our current personnel and incoming recruits.
