Backup center next year?

When Ricky Davis played against Bettendorf he missed a wide open dunk because he was showboating. That was horrible. Ryan Bowen was a much better team player when he came to town, and did not try to pull any of that garbage.

Woody will be in a lot of foul trouble next year if he plays 30 minutes, unless he cleans up the stupid fouls like a little push on a screen, etc
This. And fouling 30 feet from the hoop for some absurd reason. He does it at least twice a game.

The tallest recruit we have coming next year is 6'7 or 6'8? What happens if Woody gets injured or in foul trouble? This team might not win 14 games next year.

I have worried about a lot of things for next year concerning Iowa Basketball. The one thing I have not worried about is what we would do without Woodbury on the floor. Woody only plays about 6'6" anyway and a very unathletic 6'6" to boot.

He gets those fouls because of the way he is being asked to defend ball screens. When you aske a seven footer to try and hedge on a screen against a much quicker guard, you are going to get some of those fouls called. In my opinion, if the opponent getting screened isnt a lights out shooter, we would be better off having our center drop a step below the screen, giving the on ball defender a chance to go under the screen.

If you're gonna troll, at least make more of an effort. Obvious troll is obvious.

Once again, stop the name calling please.

I was at that game when North played Bettendorf, and Ricky Davis missed the dunk. Were you at the game? Were you watching the Iowa games when Davis and Bowen played for Iowa either? Davis got his points but he did less to help the team win games than Bowen did.

I will stand by my opinion. If you disagree fine, but don't resort to name calling when you can't support your own opinion.

I'd guess they'll try and bring in a juco to play some and if they aren't that great small ball it is. Not a ton of other options at this point. I don't see Woody playing 30 plus mins next yr either.. He's just not in shape enough and probably couldn't stay out of foul trouble playing that much.

Ryan Bowen was a much smarter team player when he came to town. And I agree. Bowen was a very good high school player who had his head in the game at all times. But there's no way you confuse the athleticism or ability of the two. Davis was a MUCH better athlete and overall player.

You could probably get by with this if you're a damn good shooting team. I don't know if Iowa will be a damn good shooting team. I will say that Indiana appears to be doing well with only 1 big, but they are a good shooting team. We'll have to play a lot of zone D.
much better shooting team without White and Gabe or Woody, of course big rebounding issue

Ernst has no ratings. He isn't ranked on Rivals or 247Sports. His highest offer is from Bowling Green or UNI. He has no offer from Iowa (nor should he receive one). He is listed as 6'8".

Baer was a low 2-star, and I had to dig to find that rating. He is a preferred walk on, but didn't really get offers for anywhere else. He is listed at 6'7".

Neither is going to be backing up Woody with anything resembling effectiveness.

I agree with JG10Hawk that we should go hard after Ikenna Okwarabizie, who we have offered. While he wasn't rated high coming out of HS, he's doing well at Tyler CC. And at 6'10" and 250 lbs, he can be an effective backup for Woody,
I wouldn't be so dismissive of a kid that has an offer from UNI. UNI ate Fran's lunch, just over 1 months ago. Just saying.

This might be the right time to look at a transfer. If we don't get one who's ready to step in next year we don't have time to develop one.

There are plenty of teams that do not have a center, period. Look no further than 120 miles to the west. The Cyclowns do not have a center. The center is overrated in college ball... Put in a big body who can move and shoot, and a true center is screwed.

Teams that can be effective without a true center have to have a full crew of hyper athletic players. Does that sound like Iowa? I think it would be easier to find one center than replace the rest of the team.

Isu has McKay who, while not a classic center, plays exclusively around the basket.

And the bolder part is simply not true.

Size can kill smaller skilled players, look no further than Kentucky who is going to walk through the field in the tourney because of their enormous size advantage in the paint.
