B1G Title Game

The fact that such talk would even have to occur is why Soldier Field should never host the game.

And it wouldn't be the Bears that the Big Ten would have to talk to, it's the Chicago Park District. They're the ones that own, run, and maintain the stadium.

Soldier Field needs turf in the worst say, and that is what the Bears do not want.

I'm pretty sure there was discussion about actually installing field turf already based on the debacle the turf posed last year.

All sides have good arguments, which is why I see the only practical solution being rotate it. Have it indoors (Lucas, Ford, new Metrodome if they build one) most years but every few do an outdoor (Chicago or others). I think once every 3 or 5 years should be outdoors

I say Indy permanently. My reason for that is the fact that playing it outdoors could potentially hurt the teams when it comes to bowl selection time. If they play a 10-3 stinker of a mud/snow type of game, it could make us look weak. The game will sell out no matter where it is obviously. The B1G fans will have fun no matter where it is. I could be wrong about it potentially hurting us. If that is not likely to be true, I do not much care where it is.

I don't understand why some people are enamoured with cold-weather football. There is a whole pretend macho culture behind it, which I will debunk in a moment, but the major factor against cold-weather football is that it is played much more poorly than warm-weather football. It is simple science. In cold weather, the body metabolizes slower, which means that it takes more energy to do less work. As a result, the players run slower, hit less hard, and make poorer decisions. When the brain is devoting significant resources to keeping the body alive in harsh conditions, it has less resources to use for other tasks.

Now, to the mythology that playing in cold-weather is "tougher". If anything, it is the opposite, since nerves are less sensitive to pain in extreme cold because the epidermal capilaries close off in the skin, as the brain and heart devote body heat and blood to major organs at the expense of extremities. If anything, endurance is prized more over toughness, because it takes a great deal more energy to do the same task at 20 degrees than it does at 60.

True, take this year for example, there will be a huge difference in temps between November 26th and December 3rd.

This game played inside or out won't have a huge impact on recruits or recruiting in general when the previous 12 are already played outside.

This will be the most watched game by fans outside the B1G and recruits. I think that the game will impact people the most about the B1G. Yes the whole season is played outside. Yes the weather wont change a ton from Nov 26th to Dec 3rd. I also prefer as a fan to be at the late season games in the cold. I hate hot weather. I like the cold tailgates. I just think if one out of every five B1G championships is a sloppy mess its one too many. The B1G gets dogged all the time for a number of things, I dont think this game should take a chance on weather and field conditions.

There's constant discussion, but the Bears flat out do not want turf. They are convinced even the newer kinds of turf will lead to more injuries, among other likely non-issues.

The Bears need new upper management like Soldier Field needs a new playing surface.

The Vikings are building a 1 Billion dollar stadium with a retractable roof arent they? Rotate between Indy and Minny

I just can't see how it is good for the league to load both of their championships into the same third rate city. Sure some people might watch on TV, but eventually people are going to get tired of traveling to that giant bowl of vanilla ice cream.

Also, what about economic and competitive advantage? Seriously, does every other region in the conference really think losing the opportunity for financial gain from one of the Big Ten Major Sports Championships is a great idea. Also, does every team on the edge of the conference want to always be at a disadvantage with respect to travel?

I say rotate it between regions and stadiums. Make the decision to do it outdoors only once every four years and then rotate the games between the good dome stadiums, right now that would be Ford and Lucas. If Minny builds theirs, they could get in the rotation.

I live in Chicago and as far as cities are concerned, comparing Chi-town to Indy is like comparing the Peninsula to the Holiday Inn. That said, it is written about ad nausem here how bad Soldier Field's turf is and by that time of year, it will be in terrible shape. The only way I could ever see the B10 playing this game in Chicago is if they got field turf, which is being discussed. However, even if they did that, I would still personally want it in Indy to assure a climate controlled environment and let the best team win.

All of that said, I would never in a million years want my favorite teams to play in domed stadiums year round because they have as much charm as Dick Chaney. BUT--for one game a year in December, I think it is a good idea.

I am not pleased with the concept of Indy getting both fb and bb tournys every year. What exactly has Indy done to lure the Big Ten to spur their economy? Not much as far as I can tell.
Either move the bb tourny back to chicago,or move the BT fb title game to chicago.
The NFL plays football games for another two months after the Big Ten Title game...outside...yea I know,it is amazing, isn't it? The very concept that football can be played in dec and jan outside in the midwest...nuts,right?
The fact is that Soldier Field is usually warmed by Lake Michigan at that time of year, which is about 42 degrees around that time....so it is going to be in the 40's...ohmigod....playing football in 45 degrees? Crazy.

What are the highest rated NFL games? Snow games. Fans are crazy about games like that.
As a biased Iowa fan, I see bad weather generally favoring our grind it out offensive attack. It also helps our basic defensive approach, with a slower track usually helping us. Now, last year, with our rb injuries, and a senior NFL drafted qb,that might not have been true, but generally it is.
A weekend in Chicago in early december is great for women looking to shop,as well as men looking for football. Christmas in the City....beats the antiseptic Hoosier dome.
At least rotate it.

Either Indianapolis or Detroit would be, by far, the worst city to host a major conference championship game.

Honest question: why are you here? To try and convince us that we're all uneducated, nostalgic idiots because we're Big Ten fans? It's not like you'll have any success doing that, so why stick around? Unless of course you're just flaming at every opportunity.

He's definitely not doing a very good job of that. I've gotten a couple laughs from his posts though.

Who am I flaming? The ACC has had their game in Charlotte, Tampa, and Jacksonville, the Big 12 has had Dallas and KC, the SEC has Atlanta.

In what freaking universe does Indianapolis and Detoit compare to that?

I may be mistaken, but I think it was a general commentary on the fact that you bring nothing to any of the discussions contained within this site.

How does Indianapolis not compare to Charlotte, Tampa, Jacksonville or KC?

Once again you have no idea what you're talking about.
