B1G Title Game

For all of the over-compensating tough guys out there who think that the title game should be played outdoors in Chicago because football is an outdoor sport and the B1G is a tough, hard-nosed conference - get over yourselves.

Why would we want our teams to be intentionally subjected to poor field conditions? Earning a trip to the title game should be a reward, not a punishment. Can you imagine what Soldier Field looks like by early December? The freezing cold temps. and torn up turf opens our players up to nothing but senseless, avoidable injuries.

I have seen so many tweets and comments about this that it makes me sick. There, I'm done. I will step down from my soap-box now.

Agreed, not to mention the injuries and outcome of the possible injuries could play in their bowl games.

I agree, just like the Super Bowl is a reward for teams for great seasons and you will never see one played outside in a cold climate city.... oh wait nevermind.

If we're worried about giving the players an "award", why not just play flag football? I mean they worked hard all season long, why should in the game that determines the championship play the game the same way it has been played all season.

Btw I don't really care either way, I just don't like the award/injury arguement. If anything its about money and the fans comfort.

B1G has been losing the PR battle, and a game in Soldier Field in terrible conditions would probably be a big source of ridicule, whether its warranted or not. Which makes me support Indy.

I agree with this, the average temp in Chicago for December is 37, and I'm sure the average would be low 40's the first part of the month with it being colder at the end of the month lowering the overall average. We aren't talking 20 below temps and 12 feet of snow, sure it could happen but it could also happen Thanksgiving weekend as well and that could impact who plays in the title game and nobody talks about moving those games inside. People see a game being played in December and the first thing that comes to mind is cold and that isn't always the case.

How do you know there would be terrible conditions, what if it is 42 and sunny? Is that terrible football weather?

The Big Ten could talk the Bears into putting new sod down for this game if they really wanted to host it.

This is a showcase for the B1G. They dont need a mud bowl. Also I dont think an outside game in Dec will help with southern recruits.

I didn't mean to imply that every game would be in terrible conditions. But if you play 5 games there, one of them will likely be in terrible conditions while most would be in conditions considered something other than ideal. You may think this is a silly concern, but you may have noticed the B1G losing the PR battle over and over and over again. I'd rather it not continue.

Laying new sod seems to have many issues, I've seen many games played on new sod where it ends up being ripped to pieces.

True, take this year for example, there will be a huge difference in temps between November 26th and December 3rd.

This game played inside or out won't have a huge impact on recruits or recruiting in general when the previous 12 are already played outside.

Also factor in that Chicago is a "pro-sports" town and they do not care about college events unless it's Notre Dame.

Having said that, why not rotate the event to really see where the best and permanent home should be?

If I had a vote, I’d choose Lucas Oil Stadium or Ford Field…actually, I’d choose Lucas Oil Stadium as the permanent home. Soldier Field’s turf usually sucks by that time of year. I’d also prefer to see the two division winners play in a controlled weather environment and not have the elements factor into the game. The SEC has played their title game indoors for more than a decade, at the same Atlanta venue, and that’s worked out just fine. The weather is far better in early December in the southeast than it is in the Midwest…I know many of you disagree with me on this one…my bet is they choose Indianapolis for the football game, give Chicago’s United Center the Men’s basketball tourney for a few years as well as the Women’s basketball tourney. Heck, I think Indianapolis is the best location for all of these events…their downtown is made for conventions and events like this.

The fact that such talk would even have to occur is why Soldier Field should never host the game.

And it wouldn't be the Bears that the Big Ten would have to talk to, it's the Chicago Park District. They're the ones that own, run, and maintain the stadium.

Soldier Field needs turf in the worst say, and that is what the Bears do not want.

I'd prefer to play outside, but I know that won't happen. Lucas Oil is a good location, and I guess I don't know what the area around Ford Field is like in Detroit, but that would make for a logical location for a rotating title game on the surface.

I don't think that has to be factored in at all, if the game was at Soldier Field it would still sell out.

I honestly don't care where it is played, I just find it funny people saying the weather being an issue when the weather for the games a week before isn't an issue and could determine who plays in this game in the first place.
