Offer him 3 million base salary and he is ours. With his Iowa connections, his entire staffs Iowa's connections. The new facilites nearly completed. A chance to bring his style of play to the B10 which currently doesn't have anything like it. The chance to be nearly as even as KF on the athletic dept scene and get out of being the 3rd wheel at Tennesse. A chance to come to a bball school with way more history and tradition than Tennesse. A chance to get out of the back yard of Calipari and Kentucky. I don't see any reason why Bruce wouldn't come here, I think the timing is almost perfect with all of the things I listed above and I know we can afford this additional increase in pay. With the increase in revenue from ticket sales next year alone it would be close to offsetting. There would definitlly be some ticket price increases in bball the next few years but I am all about paying for a quality product. It is Bruce Pearl or bust IMO...........

How much is his buyout at Tennessee? That cant be cheap

Pearl is not coming to Iowa. Maybe he will at some point in his career but not now

"Should Pearl, 48, leave Tennessee in the next year, his buyout would cost $2.5 million — a figure that will decrease incrementally over the next four years to $1 million." From 2008 article here:

www.usatoday.com/sports/college/mensbasketball/sec/2008-07-02-tennessee-pearl_N.htmhttp://www.usatoday.com/sports/college/mensbasketball/sec/2008-07-02-tennessee-pearl_N.htm

Thanks. There you have it. Iowa isnt going to pony up $5 million in buyout money ($2.5 mil for pearl and $2.4 mil for Lick) plus a salary for a new coach.

Your right, Iowa won't pay all that to buy him out of Tennesse contract, but guess what, maybe the boosters will. I think if Pearl is really interested and Barta brings in all the boosters to see if the funds can be raised to make it happen we have a VERY GOOD chance of getting him. I have a good feeling that a lot of the big time donors and alumni would support this quick fund raising event to get him here....So I wouldn't say NO way NO how will this happen due to that one reason...

Other info I've read is that Memphis last year was to offer Pearl a $21 million/7 year deal. (Big Boss at FedEx in Memphis is a booster $$$) Pearl's contract was tweaked because of that offer. Of course, Pearl has ties to Iowa, but still it would take BIG, BIG money.

Even assuming the money matches up you're still ignoring the fact that Tennessee is a good job and Iowa is a terrible job right now. He would have to be crazy to leave for Iowa right now

Pearl has been #1 of my list for ages.

Some married couples get that one celebrity they could have sex with if they ever got in the position to do so - I can't remember what they call it... basically it would never happen, but if it did it's ok type of deal.

Pearl is the coach that I would allow Iowa to fire any coach at any point and time no matter what. He's the coach that I think needs to be focused on until he rejects us a billion times.

People don't really think this do they? No one smokes that much cheeb, right?

$2.5 million, but Iowa won't be paying it. Barta will bring the major boosters together to see if raising this is possible. I bet it is very possible....

I'm not real familiar with the dynamics of how this all works, but judging by the fact that our Athletic Department brings in revenue comparable to what Notre Dame brings (according to Jon's numbers the other day), and if Notre Dame could afford to buy out Charlie Weis's contract, then I have a hard time believing that we wouldn't be able to afford this, either. I don't know for sure, but I tend to agree that this would be possible if we really wanted to do it.

I am with everyone else, It would knock my socks off if we could get Pearl but if he wasn't interested last time I don't see it happening.

And if you can't get Pearl...

....then go after John Wooden. I bet he wouldn't be as expensive. And why wouldn't he come to Iowa, he went to college at Purdue, so he has Big ten ties. I bet we could get him to come.

The point is, just because you say Barta has to do the impossible doesn't mean he can. Pearl isn't coming. Get over it. Why would he? Why? Give me one reason? he isn't from Iowa, he only spent five or six years in Iowa. And he has Tennessee rolling. Are you serious? The only thing working in favor of a program trying to lure him is that clause in Pat Summit's contract that says that she will make as much as the men's coach, or something like that. But he's still making 2.3 M or whatever it is. You can't get him by offering the same money.

Get a clue.

I don't have time to read the article right now (and maybe I should make time?), but was that buyout clause effective immediately (meaning 2008)? If it decreases to $1 million after four years, that would mean that we are two years into that clause. Wouldn't that make the buyout $1.5 million instead of $2.5 million? Just curious. I do think boosters would help to pay that total of $4 million.
