At what point do you start White?

Anyone that has played ball knows that it pisses you off if you are one of the best players and not starting. Doesn't matter who is getting the minutes and who is in at the end. Its all about being a starter. Theres no worse feeling than working with the B team in practice when you know you should be starting.

The best players play. I dont think White cares if he starts. He's contributing, that should be enough. If Fran wants him to start he'll start him. It looks like this team has total buy in on the team concept. So if coach wants you to come off the bench, you do it.

Am I missing something here with all the comments about White being gassed? I havent really noticed it.

Is it a known fact that he isnt quite in top shape or is there something physically wrong with him that prohibits him from playing long stretches?

And nobody here is suggesting that White should play 30-35 minutes per game. They are just thinking that White should be in the starting line-up.

White is dang good, and is one of our five best...but man he does get gassed...after a couple trips down the floor at one point last night, he was the last one back up and down the floor. Maybe start him and then rotate him out than back in. Idk for sure...all I know is next year I think we have a heck of a line up out there with:
PG- Gessell or Clemmons
SG- Marble
SF- White
PF- Basabe
C- Woodbury
Bench
Mccabe
May
Ingram
Olesani
Meyer
Wow I am pumped for next year, finally quality depth, imo Mccabe and May are great guys off the bench. Mccabe is that "dirty" post player who won't back down and May is the athlete.

Once again somebody forgets Oglesby. Kid was a top 150 recruit and he will be a contributor for 4 years here and possible multi-year starter.

As a coach your always looking for ways to improve. You dont just leave things the way they are just because you've won games. I personal believe that White should be starting, I think that above everything else, he has earned that right. He has far out produced May. That energy that he brings off the bench, he'll bring right from the beginning. Maybe May will bring energy off the bench. Couple things that maybe Fran is thinking that maybe holding him back is 1. May has fragile confidence and the move would destroy that. 2. Just wondering if Fran is somehow protecting White from the possibility of Foul trouble, he does see him everyday in practice. I trust Fran, we have already improved immensely since November, so what he decides is good with me. What matters is who's in at the end of game anyway, and White seems to be out there most of the time.

I agree with everything you said.

The real correct answer is that Fran is the coach and knows what is best for this team. But, it is something to talk about right?:)

What an awesome problem...too many talented, hustling players to start only five. How sweet it is. :)

I know I can't get enough White...man-crush?

I agree. I don't get the "yeah but he is great coming off the bench". Yes, and he can be great starting the game too.

As a former coach, I think I cans speak for all coaches when I say "It isn't important who starts the game... it's important who FINISHES the game."

I would disagree. Would you rather be starting and not playing when the game is on the line? I'd rather finish than start. Give me the ball with 10 seconds left and we're down 1 point! (Or would you rather be the guy who scores 15 points a game and NEVER sees the last two minutes?)

My brother was a decent HS basketball player who never started a game but was an all-conference selection. Seems there was another kid on the team who had no basketball sense but could jump out of the gym. He started just to get the opening tip; at the first dead ball my brother came in and played pretty much the rest of the game. The other kid saw only the opening tip and a couple of minutes more.

The correct answer is White should be starting.

Thanks to all that participated even if you were wrong.:)

You, sir, have never played basketball for a winning team. And you have NEVER been a successful coach.

While he has definitely outplayed May, i thought May had a decent game last night. Aside from scoring i saw him harrassing his opponent a few times in the second half.

He played well and as I've already said I don't have a problem with him starting. Fran knows his team. I would also venture to say that May has probably been playing better lately due to White's increased pt. He had a really nice spin move for a lay up late in the game.

And White routinely gets starter's minutes. So what's your point?

What is your point that if he starts the team is going to fall apart and start losing? I thought my point was pretty self explanatory.

You said as a player you wanted to be on the floor as much as possible. White is already getting starter's minutes. So why does he need to be in at the opening tip? It's a title. Actually being in the starting lineup is not important at all. He's playing just as much as he would if he were starting. If he started, he'd get pulled at some point for a blow. He wouldn't be getting many, if any more minutes.

I don't understand how we can win back-to-back Big Ten road games for the first time in 5 years, and we've got people questioning the rotation and wanting to shake up what's working.

I trust Fran on this. If he feels White's impact is bigger when he comes off the bench and wants to keep him as a 6th man for now, then I'm behind that 100%.

Never got how people get all hung up on "starters." Who cares who starts? It's who finishes that counts.
