Assuming Norm has coached his last game....

I like this suggestion, but I don't know if Kirk would consider Dan a suitable staff member. McCarney does have a bit of personal baggage that might not fit, but someone with his passion and fiery personality would be nice addition, I think. That may be something this staff sorely needs, whether it's Dan or not.

I should rephrase that, it is probably not Akin, but I hope its Akin. He brings his NFL experience and also has been under the staff previously.

Personally, I think new DC will be Phil Parker.

On other hand, I would like to see Dan M brought back to IC. He has a passion for Iowa football and he is only DL coach at Florida. Meyer picked someone else over him as DC last year.

It would come down to the relationship Kirk has had with Dan. I have no idea what that may have been when they were coaching together. Also, there is still possibility DM will get head coach offer elsewhere too.

If not selected as DC, assuming Norm does retire, I think Phil Parker will go elsewhere within a year. He has turned down other offers to stay at Iowa but dont see him staying long if not selected as DC.

Hope not. Have you seen the D the past few weeks? I'm guessing he's had a hand in leading the D so I'd scratch him off the list in a heartbeat.

Ron Aiken would be a great choice. I don't see McCarney and his blitzkrieg style sitting well with KF.

Personally, I would like to see Rick K get a look. The D Lines have been great and he is a young and energetic guy. You look at Fitz and BB and youth is no longer something that is looked down on in coaching circles.

He is someone who can really grow his coaching resume and potentially be in line for the head coaching job in 15 years when KF retires.

Why not go get Dan McCarney to coach D.

yeah, let's go hire someone with no ties to our defense as our DC. you know, it's not like our system has worked very well in the past 12 years......

(i have never understood why this topic continually raises it's head).

It raises it's head because we have spent the majority of the season without a D coordinator with no specifics on when he will return. I don't think the odds are good he is our D coordinator come next season.

Maybe I haven't heard the latest news, but everything I have heard points to Norm being back fairly soon and for the long haul. Maybe his health will force his hand, but everything I have heard is telling me that Norm has no intension at all of retiring any time soon, so I think this is a somewhat moot topic, at least for now.

That said, KF would not hire McCarney as the DC and I doubt McCarney would take the job. Besides the fact that DM will most likely stay where he is until he gets another shot at head coaching (Assistant Head Coach on one of the top programs in all of football, plus getting to live in Florida ain't a bad gig at all), KF wants someone to run his style of defense using his coaching philosophy, meaning vanilla and conservative. McCarney would only take a job where he could run his own style of defense using his personal coaching style. I don't think the two jive very well.

Add on that KF is very loyal and will hire someone already with the team and I just see zero chance of McCarney being hired here. And, and far as I know, there will not be a vacancy for the forseeable future.

It will be Parker or Wilson
Mac should at least be considered if he doesn't get the Minn job
What about some young blood ...
Rick Kaczenski?
