Not what you would call a "feel good" tale, but an interesting look at how someone's life can unravel. I find the fact that he thinks he might still get a chance to play in the NFL to be the most depressing aspect of this whole story.

You sure about that? Once he gets out, the NCAA will probably grant him two more years of eligibility at some SEC school.

I kind of recall him showing up his freshman year at Iowa and he was running his mouth in front of other players. Some Iowa player who had been around the program for a while whipped Williams butt, took him down with some wrestling moves and put him in his place the hard way.

Maybe it was the water in Bolingbrook? That's more reasonable that pot and alcohol.
Think of the millions and millions of kids who drank and smoked and who turned out fine.

Seau, Belcher, Hernandez, Chris Benoit, tons of others, had brains full of it. It’s clinically proven that two of the symptoms of CTE are lack of impulse control and rage. I’ll bet you my life savings right now that when Ray Rice croaks and they check his melon out it looks like a used up sponge.

It seems like that’s guys either go Bernie Kosar/Jim McMahon and turn into mumbling veggies, or they go nuts and kill people. I wonder what fork in the road of their biology sends them to a particular direction instead of another...

Yep, I agree.

I wasn't implying that it's not CTE. It's quite possible.

I would point out that his improved academic efforts and complete change in attitude (presumably) could be construed as inconsistent with CTE, which is thought to be permanent and frequently progressive.

I wonder where the program would be if he worked out better. That recruiting class had the chance to make 05 06 and 07 great. If it worked out with William's and the City Boys, we could have been close to top 10 from 02 to 09 and Ferentz wouldn't have changed his recruiting strategy. What could have been....

there is plenty of evidence that regular use/abuse of pot (especially starting at a young age) does lead to a disproportinate percentage of violence.

chemicals do effect behavior and personalities. ultimately, however, i agree that the individual is responsible.
