Article about Ferentz's highest rated recruit ever (Bonecrusher)

I kind of recall him showing up his freshman year at Iowa and he was running his mouth in front of other players. Some Iowa player who had been around the program for a while whipped Williams butt, took him down with some wrestling moves and put him in his place the hard way.

What a sad story. Yep that alcohol and pot never affects anyone in a negative way. Sure.

Maybe it was the water in Bolingbrook? That's more reasonable that pot and alcohol.
Think of the millions and millions of kids who drank and smoked and who turned out fine.

“Iowa does things right, and everybody knows that,” says Ivlow, who still coaches the Bolingbrook team. “You’re impressed when you go there. There’s nothing flashy about them. Kids know they’re going to get treated right there. Families know their kids are going to get treated right there.”

I know it's all been said before, but if that doesn't sum it up better than anyone, I don't know what does.

Let’s not...

My asshole is different than everyone else’s, but I don’t show it to people and debate it’s merits or lack there of.

There are plenty of places on the internet to bark opinions on moral and political ssues, if you’re interested I can provide you with a comprehensive list of them. I’m totally serious.

If this happened now, rightly or wrongly, you can bet there would be a CTE defense.
Maybe a valid one.

Seau, Belcher, Hernandez, Chris Benoit, tons of others, had brains full of it. It’s clinically proven that two of the symptoms of CTE are lack of impulse control and rage. I’ll bet you my life savings right now that when Ray Rice croaks and they check his melon out it looks like a used up sponge.

It seems like that’s guys either go Bernie Kosar/Jim McMahon and turn into mumbling veggies, or they go nuts and kill people. I wonder what fork in the road of their biology sends them to a particular direction instead of another...

You sure about that? Once he gets out, the NCAA will probably grant him two more years of eligibility at some SEC school. ;)

In all seriousness, why not? He still has eligibility. Is eligibility age dependent? I don’t think so.

A clock starts when you first matriculate, and you have 5 years from that point to complete your career.

Yep, I agree.

I wasn't implying that it's not CTE. It's quite possible.

I would point out that his improved academic efforts and complete change in attitude (presumably) could be construed as inconsistent with CTE, which is thought to be permanent and frequently progressive.

I wonder where the program would be if he worked out better. That recruiting class had the chance to make 05 06 and 07 great. If it worked out with William's and the City Boys, we could have been close to top 10 from 02 to 09 and Ferentz wouldn't have changed his recruiting strategy. What could have been....

I read the story, sad for him, even worse for victims. Hope it has a better ending for him and the victims.

Most of all it is a reminder about how much we need to have nationwide legalization of cheap marijuana, hopefully at an early age. Yah, that will work. More Braindead citizens will help enhance our productivity.

Sidenote" "The Athletic" is a great resource if you follow several sports for several teams. It is a great "buy" IMHO.

Someone should have told Williams that weed was against the law. If he knew that, none of that would have ever happened. You would think he would have known that beating the shit out of women and trying to rape them was illegal too, but I guess not.

Most of all it is simplistic to blame pot and not the man.

The answer is actually in the story....

““I was smoking and drinking like I was in high school. When I got to college, it was hard for me to keep up with the demands of a student-athlete and basically live blyhis duplicitous life off the field. So that was getting to me. I just kind of lost structure and drive. I was not in a good place. It wasn’t Purdue. It was me.”

there is plenty of evidence that regular use/abuse of pot (especially starting at a young age) does lead to a disproportinate percentage of violence.

chemicals do effect behavior and personalities. ultimately, however, i agree that the individual is responsible.
