Army All American -- C. French

French is a great athlete, we all knew that. But, I don't want athletes who play football. I want football players who are athletes.

Perhaps this short statement is an oversimplification of your view, but how does that fit in with our staff targeting players that excelled in other sports but didn't necessarily put up great football numbers?

Don't we all talk a lot about how great KF, Doyle, and everybody are when it comes to player development?

Don't we take great athletes, who aren't polished FB players, and turn them into players that get drafted?

Or the fact that about 1/4 of our roster is former HS QB's, yet we only have 4 or 5 QB's on the depth chart? Athletes that we turned into football players at other positions. Given this staff's development history, if you don't think we could have used a 6'6" 220 lb kid who runs a legit 4.5 (assuming his hand timed 4.37 is correct) you are out of your mind.

How bout you go back and look at my posts about a year before French ever committed anywhere. I said from day one I could care less about this kid and he would be a non-factor wherever he went. Nice try though.

What I mean is that French doesn't seem to think like a football player, because it doesn't appear that that's his heart's deepest desire. I don't think that's something that you could say about our success stories (didn't have the heart for it). Just looking at the QB's turned WR. Athlete who happens to play football: Paul Chaney, Jr. Football player who happens to be an athlete: DJK. See the difference?

So now you're pretending to know how Christian French thinks? Wow... And theres nothing you can quantify that says someone does or doesn't have "heart", just a little FYI...

If you think he wont be good because you don't think he's good at football, thats fine, go ahead and say that. But don't be the moron who talks about not having "heart"

He just doesn't appear to have a football player's mentality. He definitely appeared to shy away from contact in the couple games I saw this fall. And doesn't look to have a really high football IQ. He's just a freak athlete. But we've had guys (like Chaney) that are very athletic, and don't pan out because they simply aren't football players. French was a basketball player up until a year ago.

He's just not a guy that would fit with the type of schemes we run, IMO. He's better off at Oregon, where it's a track meet.

I think TM is talking more about players that put up great "combine" type numbers. Guys that look good in a t-shirt and can beat everybody running a 40 yard straight line. We tried the track guy in pads with Chaney and never saw much for production.

We love taking football players that also wrestled, played basketball or another sport in high school as these guys are often great leaders. These are the types of players that built this program under KF.

This pretty well sums it up.

CF is a cocky kid who thinks he his better than where he is from. You see thees kids all the time. They all think they are too good to hang around their roots. The kid is good and wish we would have gotten him, but I think he is a d bag with a black and gold target on his back with a sign underneath that says " Cheap Shot Plaeas!"

Where is Coker from again?

Do you know him personally?

I don't remember Coker picking up a hawkeye hat then putting it down to put on an Oregan hat at a press conf? D Bag move plain and simple. If you want to go then that is fine but don't insult everyone in doing so.

I thought French was well spoken and polite in every interview he did that day.

Just to clarify I think he is very good and I am not the sour grapes type. I actually wish he was a Hawk. I just thought how he handled the signing was tasteless.

I'm definitely not a sour grapes kind of guy. I was saying in September that he wasn't a make or break recruit. Nice if we get him, but not really an issue if we don't. When I first saw his measurables, my jaw dropped, and I was practically drooling at the possibilities with him at WR and CJF at TE. But after seeing him play a couple times, I was shocked at how invisible he was most of the time. In the Cedar Rapids area, you should be an absolute standout with the kind of athleticism he has, if you have any kind of feel for the game at all.

He had an offer from Iowa. That is all I need to know about his ability and potential to play football. All the rest of the rhetoric is just that.

He had potential, no doubt. But he would have been a big time project, IMO. So I'm not overly concerned about missing out on him. Paul Chaney had an offer, too, and he's a guy that everybody loves to rag on (not really fair to him, he's not a bad guy. he's just a track guy).
