Apt Comment

Steve Kerr is wrong. MSU was playing football the whole game. Rewatch the game. I did and the officiating was worse than I originally thought.

The telling thing that Kerr said about MSU said was "they play physical, that is just who they are."

It was a physical game that Iowa was able to have a 12 point lead in and failed to close, not something we have seen ever this season, so it was a bit surprising...not really.

When Gesell went out, Iowa became stagnant, he moves well without the ball and Marble showed again that he is not capable of taking over a game. White also showed he has a long way to go as well. The freshman have to do work, but we all expect that.

If Iowa is going to be an upper echelon team next year the freshman will have to take the next step, but White/Marble have to be the guys that get it done night in and night out. Neither has proven they can in big games, or consistently. I think when all is said and done, the freshman class is one of the best to walk through the doors, but they alone can't do it and this is partly because of the state of the Iowa program when Fran took over. Think about his Seniors: Cole, Gatens/Cartwright and May...that is four guys only contributing in three seasons from Sr. classes, just speaks volumes to what Fran has done and the quality of player he has brought in. There are still issues, but the longer Fran is the more talent has come through the door.

The officiating was awful, but Kerr is dead on when he says MSU is physical and that is who they are.

I'm going to get grilled for this post but I'm putting it out there anyway. If Iowa does make the Dance I honestly believe the committee will be looking at an adjusted RPI for Iowa...what it would be if we had won. The concensus among objective talking heads is that things were pretty questionable late in our game. I'm not saying we lost because of officiating and I'm not saying we are getting into the NCAA tournament. I'm saying if we make it that there is some unofficial adjustment to our RPI in the minds of the Selection Committee.

There...now I know some people are going to come take shots at me but I'm a big boy and can handle it.

Hey guy Duff reffed a high school sub-state game! How dare you take Steve Kerr's word over Duff's!! You think Kerr knows more about basketball than Duff?!

I apologize for thinking Kerr is more knowledgeable than our resident officiating expert.

I didnt even know Duff is a ref.

Lol it's not exactly at an ISU v KU level. I really haven't seen anyone talking about it, and I'm not holding my breath for an acknowledgement of errors from the BoneG offices.

i caught a glimpse of Nix tackling that one OSU player on the layup. what the heck? why does he get a free pass to foul?

Later in the game I believe it was Nix who was called for a flagrant foul at a crucial point in the second half, might have cost them the game along with Craft going nuts in the second half......

College basketball officiating is a difficult occupation. There may be a few of us that remember when two officials officiated games. From memory I think the change to three officials was after 1980. It was thought that this would solve many of the problems. Since that point there was an effort to get the games called consistently among conferences. Yet this weekend has proven that the occupation really hasn't resolved its problems.

From a purely personal perspective the use of three officials did nothing to solve the problems. Instead it just added to the complexity of officiating. Game after game you see officials unable to communicate with each other. All three make judgement calls and each may view the same play differently. Oh you'll see a few out of bound calls reversed, but when it comes fouls, unless it is of the fragrant variety, there is no communication. How often do we see calls by one official but never called by another official?

Then there is the matter of consistency within a game. The B1G refs are horrible about remaining consistent. They let the games get too physical then they start calling ticky tack fouls. Jim Delaney needs to find a new supervisor of officials after this season. It needs to be someone that is not a former official or coach. Football went to replay and that has greatly improved the chances of officials overly impacting games. Basketball needs to rethink how the third official is used.

One idea is to put the third official as head official and with the right to overturn the two on the floor with the aid of video.

Then you missed them call a foul on a three that was way less contact then marble got on the last shot and then Ross drew a foul underneath the hoop jumping into a guy which again was way less blatant than marbles. So they are improving

This would be relevant if the severity of the contact were the primary factor determining if something is a foul.

It's relevant because the marble no call is called 99% of the time, with far less contact made most the time. I get your point Duff, I'm just saying....

Marble was contacted by the defender hard enough to move his body and alter his shot. I dont believe in what Duff says on the severity of the contact. First of all there was legit contact on that play and when a shooter is out in space then any type of contact should be called. If that defender had just reached out and slightly pushed marble in the gut it should have been called because that is a foul.

It was a foul and needless to say the way the refs called the second half they let it go.

Izzo had to have had a perfect angle to see all the contact and might have been waiting for the whistle, oops what was I thinking.

Believe whatever you want, but its an ignorant belief. The "severity of the contact" is never the primary determining factor when considering if something is a foul, and its rare that its ever a factor at all.
