Anyone want more Alford talk???

This article was thrown up on the espn websites front page. Pretty much details how the story went down chronologically pretty well. All the way to where Pierce denies Hartys recent allegations. The part where she details Alfords direct connection to the athletes in action network that had contacted the victim and tried to get her to drop the suit is the most damning part to me if I had to single out just one. It blows my mind how something like that couldn't become more of a big deal. Goes to show you what little vetting these schools do or just how little they care. Just win baby!!

Kdynamite will be along any second to refute that article. As near as I can tell this is a guy on Alfs payrole who spends all his time hyping Alf on the message boards of the world.

Good article and that situation continues to make me shake my head. Just a dark time in Iowa basketball that shouldn't be forgotten. Alford is simply a joke and the fact that he still talks to the rapist is clear evidence his apology means absolutely nothing.

Then we follow it up with Lick. It makes me want to forget pretty much the entire decade from 2000-2010. Not a good way to start a millennium.

Alford may have had more on-court success than Lick, but nothing worth writing home about.

Alford did NOTHING to advance the Iowa program while he was there. If he did Lickliter would have got 4 years at least.

If Alford would have gotten the investment in the program that was needed he would still be the coach here today.

Just like he is still at New Mexico.

Yeah I mean who wouldnt leave a MWC job for UCLA.

He was promised facility upgrades and never got them. He did a pretty fair job recruiting when he had to sell the fact that the mens basketball program at Iowa had to fight for practice time in Carver with about 20 other sports and organizations.

Lickliter has no one but himself to blame for getting just 3 years. 13-19, 15-17, 10-22. That is not on Alford. Except maybe his first year, Alford never had a season at Iowa approaching anywhere near the level of ineptness that we saw under Lick.

That said, if Alford had done more with the program, I'm guessing Lickliter would most likely never have been our coach. Alf may not be our coach today, true. But I don't think he leaves for UNM after the 2007 season, either. Lickliter likely gets hired elsewhere IMO before Alford leaves for some other job.

Alford would have left Iowa for UCLA, too.

I'm not disagreeing that he had cause to leave Iowa in 2007. With the way football was hoarding all the revenue and facilities upgrades, while Carver was becoming obsolete, I can't say I blame him for looking elsewhere. That, in combination with the building frustration from fans/administration with his teams' on-court performance/Pierce fallout, made it a no-brainer.

But even if he'd gotten everything he'd been promised, I still think he'd leave for UCLA if they came calling. Hell, if he'd done more with the program, he probably gets called back to Indiana.

Then we should thank the administration for not giving him what he wanted.

I can actually agree with this because I actually prefer having Fran at the helm of the program over Alford. Unfortunate that we had to sit through Lickball for 3 years before getting Fran.

While I agree that it was unfortunate we had to suffer through the Lick years, I would add that it was unfortunate that we had to endure Captain Hair Gel as long as we did. I think he should have gotten the boot after he sent his AIA buddy to strong arm the PP rape victim at a prayer meeting.

Who leaves a good Big Ten job for an MWC job...a guy who wasn't invested into staying at Iowa.

But, but, but, New Mexico is a basketball school and has the best fans in the galaxy and I am so deeply committed that I am signing a HUGE contract extension to show them my loyalty, dedication, and love for the Lobos and their fan base.

Iowa wasn't a good B1G job in 2007.

That, in no small part, is due to Alford himself. It was plenty good for him to take the job when Davis was let go. And Davis seemed to do all right with the limitations that Alford just couldn't seem to overcome. The facilities might not have helped Stevie, but they shouldn't have led to the downward spiral he set the program on.

This is a crock. The reason it wasn't a good Big Ten job in 2007 was Alford. He didn't have a good enough record and he alienated much of the fan base with how he handled the Pierre Pierce problems. If SA had won more games and been a unifier of the fan base he would have been able to secure funding for upgrades before that time. But he did neither. He was the reason he couldn't get the upgrades. This fan/donor base put up a lot of money when Lic was the coach to get upgrades and that was during the worst economy since the Great Depression. You can say that it is because SA left and they realized how far behind they were, but you would be lying to yourself.

Alford had been there long enough to advance the program and develop good relationships with donors. He did neither. Actually, he did the exact opposite in both cases. And this is coming from someone that, relatively speaking, was an Alford supporter, short of his handling of the PP situation.

I didn't realize it was the men's basketball coach who was responsible for securing funds for facility upgrades.
