too bad .. they have played 24 times and wish the Hawks was playing them and Missouri every year ... curious what caused the end of this series?

Not totally sure but maybe Mich St joining the Big 10 had something to do with it. Not sure when Notre Dame started playing MSU but Notre Dame was always playing Purdue, Michigan, Iowa a lot and then you add in MSU with the fact that Notre Dame already was playing Navy, Army and USC and had a whole bunch of yearly rivalries. Perhaps just not room for Iowa after about 1966 or so.

I think that back in the 60's the Big Ten wanted to play only conference games in November. The Iowa - ND was the last game of the season and didn't fit with the Big Ten in conference only policy in Nov.

I've always loved Notre Dame. However, I don't protect my time to watch them the same way I do Iowa. I don't know the ND roster. I follow Iowa closer. So if they played I'd pull for Iowa out of habit.

I'm Catholic as well but really could care less about Notre Dame. Actually, all BIG teams should just stop scheduling them. Hope this comes true with adding another conference team in the schedules.

This is correct. Iowa played Notre Dame every year from '49 through '62. Except for '50 it was Iowa's last game of the season. That year it was the second to last game of the season. The '63 game was canceled because of the assassination of Pres. Kennedy. In '67 the Big Ten began to play only conference games in November. That requirement pretty much ended the rivalry. Though Iowa played Notre Dame again in '67 & '68 before November.

Contrary to what some believe, the fainting Irish had nothing to do with the end of the series.
