Anyone hear Hawk Talk tonight?

I listened for awhile, then my son came over and we watched the Bulls get beat..ouch.
I heard Tommy from Des Moines call before lick got there and say that he watched hockey and something else rather than the Hawks...basically saying he had never done it before, and that Iowa needs better athletes to win.

Someone called in and asked lick if Cully could be moved to shooting guard if we bring a pg...Lick said cully was fine at pg.
Guy called and recounted how painful the last three years has been for Iowa fans and then calmly asked lick if he would consider changing his style of ball or his staff next year. Lick said no way on the staff...and style is fine also...

Then I checked out. Lucky for lick next week is the final show...it could get ugly if fans start to really vent. We have never gone thru 3 years like this...ever..fan are not used to this kind of hawk bb...couple of years maybe, but not close to 60 losses in three years...if we lose out it will be 59 losses...yikes.

Well it looks like another couple of years of bottom of the big ten for the hawks! Until lick changes his coaching staff & style of play we will not be anywhere near the top of the big ten. we might finish 7th and that is as high as we can go with his style of play. I am sorry but its going to be brutal next year as well, I wouldn't be surprised if some of the players heard those comments and might be out the door after this season! I just don't see how going 10-21 is fun. It also can't be fun only beating PSU & Indiana every year. At some point lick needs to read the writing on the wall and change something!

LOL.

Lets see how this would go....

Matt: Man did you hear how upset Larry from Bonderant was about our half court slow tempo style of play?

Aaron: Yeah he said he wasn't comming to any more games unless something changes.

Cully: Well if Larry isn't going to be comming to anymore games I don't see a single reason for me to stay. I play my heart out for that guy.

Matt: Me too.

Aaron: Well if you guys are going I guess I'll go, you guys wanna transfer to New Mexico State?

Ya it was pretty brutal. The guy who called in about Lil Lick was a moron. But a lot of those questions needed to be asked in my opinion. Especially when Barta and everyone else around the program seems to be in denial about what is happening with our program. Lick is making a ton of money to drive us further into the ground. I think he can handle answering some questions that aren't lobbed up to him.

I think there is one more Hawk Talk left this season. Should be interesting.

Tommy didn't watch the Hawks? Wow.

Reminds me of LBJ's quote: "That's it. If I've lost Cronkite, I've lost middle America."

I don't think style of play has anything to do w/ it. When we matchup well we have played some entertaining basketball. We simply need a more experienced, deeper and athletic team to compete consistently (and yes that is mostly Lick's fault). Next year we should have two of those three. It will be interesting to see if that is enough since the Big Ten won't be getting worse and probably better.

I did listen to part of Hawk Talk but had to shut it off. It was like being on message boards only you can't skip over people only complaining and had to listen to every old/mentally challenged person stutter through a question.

You don't think players listen to that stuff? You are way of your rocker old man, some of these players are upset with the style of play. Look at our recent history, what are we averaging 3 departures a year under lick! The fans are letting their voice be heard and its not easy for these 18-21 year old kids to hear that stuff day in and day out. I would not blame any of the players if they left, Iowa has a horrible basketball program and its not getting better, it is actually getting worse! 10-21 is a great way to go through college, but in the words of coach lickliter, " we are improving, we are still young and improving." Great at least we can always say we are the youngest team in the Big Ten, because it will be forever until we can say we are the "BEST TEAM" in the big ten!

Keep supporting a 9th place team in the big ten, that is all we are going to be under lickliter.

Now I'm not saying players would transfer after hearing some of those comments, but it's not only "Larry from Bondurant" that is saying "those" things. I'm not a basketball expert by any means, wrestling is my thing and I should probably just stick to it, but trying to watch this style of basketball is just boring. I don't watch a ton of basketball, but growing up loved the Davis years and will frequently watch some of the higher profile college games on TV, especially this time of year. I work with the University and have several ties with people in the AD and there are several people that are frustrated with what is going on and I get the sense that Barta will ride this thing to the end. I find it ironic that the wrestling program went through something like this not too long ago and the change turned out to be what was needed. Lets hope Lick's team comes out on fire next year or Barta learned something from his predecessor.

Which is it? We are going to be a 9th place team or a 7th place team?

I have no doubt that kids get frustrated by loosing but I can guarantee you that they don't give a rats *** about what people on call in shows or on message boards think about the direction of the program. They have persepective. They understand you are the one percenters out there, and some are a bisuit away from being the girl that got convicted of stalking AC earlier this week.

BTW the personal insults (I'm 34 BTW) don't serve to get me riled up and certainly don't help your point so I'd recommend you leave them at home next time.

The "style of play" argument is so tired and old. The bottom line is if you win people will be excited to watch it.

Look at Wisky, they run a half court style and win and thier fans support them.

Look at us in football. When we don't win you see people complaining about our old fashioned boring style. You see people advocating spread offenses and all kinds of crap. When we win that all goes away.

When people get on here and complain about the "style of play" it's like a giant flashing sign that says "I care about the wrong things". Would we have more butts in the seats if we were 10 and 20 and were averaging 90 points a game? Probably. Would our program be in any better shape if that were the case? No.

Good programs aren't built around fashion/style, they are built on substance/wins.

OK let me break this down for you as it is not a difficult concept to understand at all. You say that when we match up well with teams we compete. This is true but you do understand which teams look and match up well with Iowa right? Those teams are NW, Michigan, PSU, and Indiana. Where do you think those teams will be this year year and next year? Like Anthony Tucker said while he was still playing; "Florida for spring break!"

Iowa cannot compete with good teams with this current roster and it really doesn't matter that they are young because of how limited they are athletically. Yes you can get more mature as you age but you can rarely get a lot more athletic which is the problem.

I don't think anyone will disagree with you when you say we don't have the horses right now. I do disagree with the thought that we wont be more athletic in the future. Fuller is going to continue to improve, May is atheltic and once he improves his dribble drive will have more opporunity to showcase it, I havent seen it but Archie is supposed to be athletic, Larson, Marble, and Burst all sound like they have potential.

Bottom line is I don't buy the "we are never going to improve athletically argument".

If players are upset about the style of play, that'd be pretty ridiculous on their part. What did they expect? They decided to play for Todd Lickliter. Did they expect showtime?

I long for the day when we don't have people trying to compare our style with Wisconsin's. There's a difference between running a disciplined half-court offense with opportunistic breaks than deliberately passing the ball around the perimeter with useless high ball screens and then chucking up a 3 as the shot clock is expiring.

Wisconsin always have penetrating guards and constant motion within their offense. Their guards play on a string and they utilize their inside-out game effectively. And while they do have high ball screens, they do it to create mismatches rather than to simply get a ball handler space. They get out and run when they have the numbers. And they are effective at secondary breaks as well.

If you like Lick's style of ball, that's fine. But like it for what it is and not for what you are trying to pretend it's going to be.

I caught about 10 minutes of the Lick show by accident. Ten minutes was about all it took before wanting to pitch my radio into a snowbank. I must have only tuned in for the segment with the Lickliter family was calling in with questions and comments. "Hi coach, this is Earl from Charles City. I met you three years ago at the Webster County Pork Expo. I was the one in the John Deere hat. I just want you to know you are doing a great job with the program and those boys are a feisty bunch of players. Keep up the great work!"

One guy even called to to let coach he shouldn't pay attention to the MINORITY of Hawk fans who don't support the program or show up the the games because the hardcore fans are there ... I laughed ... Really, the number of people dissatisfied with the state of Iowa basketball is the minority?

I was happy to hear Lick was not served softball questions. He is taking home an awful lot of money from the University of Iowa and he has not produced. In year No. 3, the program is in worse shape then when he arrived ... Go ahead Lick ... stick to your conviction of not changing up your staff if the need came and keep telling yourself your "system works." ... It may have worked in the past but sometimes you don't get the same results when the playing field changes ... And poor Dolph ... I know he is the paid voice of the Hawks, but too bad the guy has to spend so much time trying to spit shine a turd into a roll of quarters ...

I agree.

1. Wisconsin has their system which is a bit unique, but this year they will go to the NCAA tourny for the 12th straight year!! So,yes, their fans are fine with it. Ryan has gone to the tourny every single year...so you think if Lick had gone to the tourny the first 3 years Iowa fans would *****? No way.

2. Even with his swinging gate system, he has always had superior talent running it...like Devin harris,Alando Tucker,Trevon Hughes, and other guards that were athletic studs. Lick has not shown any ability to attract or discover guys like that...NBA players in waiting.

As the gazette article today indicated, Lick came from a mid-major without a clue as to how to recruit at a BCS school level. Ryan came from a Div II school and he knew exactly how the recruiting game is played...
No excuses for lick's inept approach to the single biggest challenge to Iowa bb....as the Martin Bros AAU coach said, lick came in aloof, arrogant and did not bother to even touch base with local AAU programs, let alone out of state programs....he was doomed to fail from day one.
