Anyone else have issue w KF' depth charts?

You aren't catching his drift. He's asking if people have an issue with the impact that this practice may or may not have on the Jason White's and Marcus Schnoor's on the team. The guys being told that they're #2 on the chart, but in reality they're #3 or even #4.

That's a fair question, though like I said earlier, I think Ferentz chooses the players that are willing to sacrifice their pride for the good of the team to put in that position.

The question is whether or not you know White.

White is 100% a team-first sort of guy.

Furthermore, we don't know how the coaches meant the depth chart.

You have to remember that this was the first game against a FCS squad that we CLEARLY outclassed. What in the world is wrong with putting an uber-talented TR FR in order to get him very important reps? I'm sure that White saw the merit in doing such a thing.

Of course, had the game been more on the line and we needed to worry about a guy who could also protect Vandenberg ... then I'm willing to bet that White would have legitimately been the #2 guy in.

My impression is that the coaches are going to work hard in order to develop some depth at RB behind Coker. I think that the coaches already have a pretty good impression of what they have in White ... and they're then trying to develop more of the young RBs we have.

I totally agree with you. I've already said that I think the guys who get put in the situation that Duff described are guys like White, who are team-first players. I was only clarifying his point for someone who thought he (Duff) meant he had an issue with who was getting playing time.

Who knows? Could be very deliberate and meant to take a prima donna down a peg. Could just be that White had diarrhea Saturday morning. Gotta just roll with it. Players would probably take issue if it was meant to embarrass/spurn/objurgate them in some way; I just can't see Coach Ferentz doing something like that.

Doesn't that defeat the purpose of using the depth chart as motivation? Now if they only tell the player like Jason White what's really going on, that's one thing. And it actually plays into what I said earlier: the guys they choose for that role are guys who are willing to do it for the good of the team.

why does it defeat depth chart motivation? i'm assuming that if he is on a team depth chart, that would be pretty motivational. what is put out for public consumption? not so much.

Say McCall were #3 on the depth chart that we see. But the coaches pull him aside and tell him that he's really the #2 in their eyes. If they put him at #3 for motivational purposes, it would be stupid to tell him where he "really" stands.

I'm with you Duff - at some point it is kind of odd and defeats the purpose of releasing a depth chart. If Johnson can't handle the added fame of being listed as number 2 on a depth chart, then maybe he really shouldn't be the second to enter the game. Why isn't Weinke listed second team QB? Doesn't he work really hard and have four years in the program? Should Weinke get ****** he isn't extended this courtesy? So not only has he lost the real #2 spot as the second QB to enter, he has also lost the fake #2 spot on the depth charts extended to good guy veterans that are selfless team first players. Tough week for Weinke.

And I'm saying that I defer to KF's judgment as to whether "some players could take issue with the fact the depth chart doesn't accurately reflect who plays" and the effect that may have on the team and the individual players. That is part of coaching.

I trust him on this stuff. If he had a track record like Lick with regard to player transfers, I may re-evaluate my blind trust on this issue. Thus far, that is not an issue that KF has had, so I will defer to him on this issue.

I totally agree. Until proven otherwise, KF gets a lot of out his players. His way works.

Does anyone else have issues w how KF uses the depth chart? I realize that he probably uses it as a motivational tool, and he certainly uses it as a reward in some cases.

I think you have a valid point and I don't like it one damn bit either.

I wouldn't say the depth chart is a waste. Everyone knew the backup rb spot was still up for grabs. Kirk wasn't going to have a true frosh as the backup on the first depth chart. Mccall was obviously playing better and probably would took over the backup spot had he not get hurt. The rest of the depth chart seemed to play out as listed.

so why is it so unbelievable that white is in the 2 spot anyway? with the young backs we have i think its pretty nice to have a more veteran guy there. isn't this supposed to be coker's year?

white is important. he hasn't had many reps at RB but he knows the position well. i want the younger guys to get reps too; but playing system football and winning games is more important than that.

I saw White scrimmage at Kids Day and he didn't look bad. He definitely knew his assignments and showed some athleticism. He's not going to run over many people, but he's a smart player that Kirk probably trusts not make mistakes. I think if he gains some more confidence at the position, he could be more than servicable. Deandre Johnson could really help at this point too. Having 3 backs seems to be a minimum lately.

Could'nt have said it better.

I'm hoping that Andre Johnson comes on. He seems to have a good upside he's still working off the effects of his knee injury, but could be a quality back with more reps.

I may be totally wrong, but I am going to guess that we've spent more energy worrying about the depth chart in this thread than the entire Iowa team has expended worrying about the depth chart.

How much longer are we going to question KF? I'm pretty sure he knows far more than any of us.

You two need to re read the post. No one is worrying about the depth chart more questioning who plays.

What I am saying is that if I were white, and was listed as number two all off-season, and on the Monday before the openening game, and the starter comes out in the first quarter, and I see number three Sprint out there, I'm gonna be ******.

I would feel jerked around and, lied to, and used. I don't care that I'm number three. I care that you told the whole world Im number two and when in reality I'm not.
