How the heck did McCaffery blunder his way into 23 wins knowing so much less than some posters on this board? It's a friggin' miracle!

At the end of the game....while either breaking a press or running your offense, you simply keep the ball out of the centers' hands if you're worried about FT shooting.
You're the type of poster that really has no f'ing clue. Go back and watch the B10 games that we had a decent lead with 10 minutes remaining. Check out the players that were on the floor that got us to the lead, then check out the players that were on the floor when we ****** away the lead. You will notice a pattern.
That pattern was Fran (and staff) going away from the C position and inserting McCabe - nothing against McCabe, I think he's a good baller - but when you have a lead and they are not playing hack-a-hawk then why go to the shorter lineup? It gives the opponent the opportunity to get offensive boards, dribble penetrate to the paint, and gives them the opportunity to extend defensively because we are without an inside presence.
Last night, and somewhat the first NIT game, Fran (and staff) decided to leave the C's in the game whether that be Olaseni or Woody late into the game.
Go back and watch the Wisky, Minny, MSU, Nebby and PU games if you need proof.
Here is the cliffs notes to the MSU game:
Iowa up 12 with 10 minutes remaining. Fran goes small and inserts McCabe (and other interesting substitutions to say the least). Up to that point Woody had 3 boards and 2 blocked shots. Olaseni had 1 blocked shot. The majority of the points that were scored by MSU with under 10 were layups or dunks.
Here is the cliffs notes to the Minny game:
Game tied with under 10 minutes remaining. Iowa goes small at the 7 minute mark just after Woody gets an offensive board (up 2). No C see's the floor the remainder of the game and they start going inside. A bs 3 by Hollins and the game is over.
All of the losses have something in common. Last night we went away from the small lineup to end the game and we never relinquished the lead.
Anybody else realize both centers are a liability at the charity stripe?
Gabe isnt a huge liability at the line. It may be ugly but it goes in at a decent clip.
69.4%, not bad for a center.

It all depends on game flow and what he sees in his players. I thought Woodbury and Olaseni both had very good games last night, and both showed a great deal of agressiveness. Fran likes that.
I wish I agreed with this more but there have been quite a few games where one of the centers have had good games only to ride pine at the end.
As I've said at least twice in other posts, Olaseni and Woodbury are not clutch free throw shooters. You will usually see McCabe on the floor in the last 5 to 6 minutes of every relatively close game, along with Marble, Gesell, White, and Oglesby (or Clemmons). McCabe has more experience and hits about 75% of his FTs, and is pretty decent in the last 4 minutes from the line as well. This is not a difficult concept to understand. McCaffery is playing it exactly right.
Most times (as Gabe finished his "and-1", last night). However, it's been on the defensive end and rebounding where most of those blown leads were lost, not at the line.
Anyway, if someone's going to the line at the end of the game, it's going to be off designed plays for White or Marble.
You don't think Fran is putting a little to much on free throw shooting? Why put so much importance on free throw shooting late in games when Woody, Gabe, and McCabe don't go to the line much anyway? It's not like they were intentionally fouling us in these close games.
If Woody or Gabe were in a close game in the last 3 minutes, they would be consistently targeted as the guys to foul. Also, another concept that is not difficult to understand, is that you need ball handlers in close games the last few minutes.
This place was so much better when you ran away because Vin was picking on you.
So the center doesn't rebound the ball? You have no ability to throw the ball into the post? He can't draw a charge when you are over the limit? What exactly can he do?

lol at someone arguing in favor of having McCabe in the game due to foul shooting.
McCabe's 75% foul shooting does not outweigh his terrible defense. He is truly an awful defender, just gets abused in the post.
If it's the last 30 seconds, maybe put him in, but not the last 5 minutes. In the last couple minutes go offense/defense, but having him defend the opposing center is like giving up.
