Anybody else get the feeling

Gatens was guarding Appling for much of the game last night. Appling put up a career high of 18 pts. Also, this business that Matts struggles are a result of the players around him is absurd. Matt continues to see plenty of open looks. He's not cashing them in. He's playing with the leading assist man in the conference and has Basabe down low who receives a good number of double teams. Matts job on this team is to be the shooter and right now and for most of the season he has struggled doing that. Specifically in late game, tight ball games.

As for the OP, I totally understand what he's getting at. Talent upgrade is needed. Some of the players that see significant minutes need to be reduced by way of more talented players coming in. I do think those players would be very valuable coming off the bench.

"Don't go overboard with the hyperbole?" Isn't that the point of hyperbole?

As far as the hint that this might be a racism argument. Not my intention. I guess I could have thrown Archie in there, but I don't see people arguing he is going to all of sudden be a competent B10 starter like they do about Brommer. I gave McCabe and Marble a pass, because they are freshmen and we don't know how they will develop.

Seriously guys, don't take things so literally.

If you simply want to stir reactions,I guess you are right. Hype away.
If you want to rationally discuss Iowa bb,then maybe this is better left unsaid?

Pot stirring might be more fun,I suppose.

Ok: the entire Iowa roster is made up of kids who should not even make a good high school team right now! Hype enough for you? Who will up the ante?

Your grammar criticism is incorrect. The original repsonse used overboard as a verb, not an adjective like you described. One can "go overboard" without using the term as a superlative, such as "Don't go overboard with the whisky".

For your criticism to be valid, then he would have had to use the phrase like "The stench coming from his pants was overboard".

Don't forget, Gatens was the runner up for the Big Ten frosh of the year.

Yeah, I made this point in the Gatens thread. He came in highly developed. He was way more ready than other frosh to play. The problem was that he was very, very close to his ceiling. So, when the next year came around, others blew right past him.

Actually, the problem with your response is that by changing the subject matter you lose the fact that the statement, "don't go overboard with the hyperbole" is a tautological statement. Hyperbole makes sense as a rhetorical trope exactly because it "goes overboard." Basically the same thing as saying, "don't be loud with the yelling."

However, I don't quite get how you saw that I thought "going overboard" was used as a superlative adjective, which indicates superiority, such as "the most beautiful." Maybe you thought I thought the poster meant something like "the overboard hyperbole?" If so, that that is not what I thought. I took it as a verb.

But, the metacommunication is fun.

Appling hit at least 3 of 4 threes when Iowa was playing zone. I was watching with a couple of other people and we were all wondering why in the hell kept leaving him open when they are playing a zone...he's the only one that was shooting the ball from outside well for MSU. He also got a couple fast break baskets.

Gatens is a solid all around player. Maybe it's his job to be the shooter on this team, but that's more by default than anything....who else is going to be the shooter. Fran understands this team has a difficult time getting open looks, so he gives Gatens the green light any time he is open..

The team has regressed lately, but Gatens is not close to the main problem.

I mean it really is seriously delusional here sometimes.

I think the rational ones would really want Basabe, Cartwright and three new players - White, new big, new combo guard.

Now you're speculating how good the recruits are which I think is something a lot of posters don't do. Ideally yes the two new recruits would be the best two players on the team.

I don't think it's rational to assume Gatens will not start he leads the team in ppg, mpg, 2nd in assists, 2nd in a/t, 1st in ft%, 2nd in 3pt % (1st since he got his brace off) and first in spg. And he's at a weaker position (2 and 3).

White is a tweener and I doubt we will go slower at 3 so I think either he will start, new big, or Brommer. Not the combination of the above (and I hope Brommer is the third option there)

I think it'll look something like
Cartwright
Marble or new guard
Gatens

Then the four and the five will be one of the following
White and Basabe
Basabe and Brommer
Basabe and New big
