Anybody who was there ... please feel free to contribute your thoughts.

To steal from CHawk on another board (writing a brief bit about what a buddy saw) ...

"Ok, here is what I got from my buddy who was there on Saturday (pardon my grammar):

He said the OL was very impressive and Reece Morgan loves James Ferentz's technique (big shocker, I know). Derby does not look very natural at QB but is huge, looks like a LB playing QB. Has a long wind up, etc. Loved KMM, said he is impressive. Coker is a beast and Morris too...really becoming a leader. Said Vandy is definitely the best QB. CJF struggled a bit with some blocking but can really catch the ball and is impressive looking. Prater and Hyde are much more confident than last year, leaders and always first in the drill line, which is to be expected. Very athletic Defense but a little small, hopefully speed will make up for lack of size.

That's all I can remember from our conversation...nothing earth shattering but it was great to talk some Hawkeye football for sure."

CJF's blocking issues worry me a little. The good news is there is plenty of time to get that cleaned up.

I'm not too worried about CJF's blocking at this point. You still have to remember that he is a true SO who spent most of his time in high school playing WR. Thus, it begs to reason that it would take a while for him to get down the blocking side of job.

TE is such a vital role of the O, he's simply not ready to play the role of the "move TE" yet. Thus, it's good that he gets a chance to try to earn the #2 spot first.

I agree that I am not worried about CJ's blocking. He is good athlete and will improve. If they need a true blocker, then will probably see an OL line up in TE slot or Gimm, who may be at FB but still used primarily as blocker.

Just listening to comments about him, I cannot see Derby staying at QB. Hopefully he will move to LB. He seems to be a beast that will see playing time in the fall if he does move.

We'll see. Considering that it sounds like Wienke is still squarely ahead of Derby ... the deciding factor will likely end up being whether or not Rudock can displace him. I really think that we'll be seeing Derby seeing action on special teams.

We can't quite write-off Derby at QB yet because he's not going to win a starting gig until his RS JR year anyhow. The question is whether or not he's willing to wait ... and, furthermore, whether or not the spot will even be his by then. Many Iowa fans already seem to be "annointing" Rudock as the heir apparent at QB ... and I don't think that chapter in Iowa football has yet been written.

Anyhow, I anticipate that we'll see AJ Derby on special teams in 2011 and we WON'T see a position move by him until bowl prep of the 2011 season AT THE SOONEST! If he ends up switchings positions ... it will be interesting to see where he ends up landing. If he doesn't work out at QB ... then where? TE? LB? ... or maybe DE?

This tidbit was taken from iowabig10champs (on the rivals board):

"Here are some new strength and conditioning records for 2011. Hang clean --o line. Matt tobin - 390lbs. Wr- Keenan Davis - 370. Qb- aj derby - 340. 10 yd dash -- Joe ganglione- 1.55. Oline -- Matt tobin -- 1.61. Te - brad Herman -- 1.52 and deandre Johnson -rb- 1.44. Fb - mark Weismann - 1.57. Pro agility - safety - Collin sleeper - 3.85. Loin - woody orne - 4.31. Now this is what I found interesting, here are overall improvements in a career. Mike Daniels - 2007 bench was 345 and squat was 330. In 2011 his bench is 471 and squat is 561. Cole heissel - august 2010. - bench was 270 and now is 358 and squat was 250 and now is 505. Casey mcmillian - July 08 bench was 250 and squat was 230. In march 2011 casey's bench is 408 and his squat is 580. This was most impressive, deandre johnson - June 2011 to march 2011. Bench went from 200 to 305 and squat from 220 to 435 in 9 months"

Great stuff as usual Homer. Is DJ from June 2010 to March 2011? I assume so. Great stats though
Thanks

Yes, you're assuming correctly. That was just the original typo in the quote.

Again, I appreciate the contributions from the posters who I "stole" from ... and I encourage any others to feel free to contribute!

I'm completely speculating... but how many back up QBs play special teams?? I think special teams is the just the start of his position change and he will eventually move to LB.

D Johnson might be a super huge surprise this year. After Coker busts some heads I can see DJ breaking some nice runs. He may have some nice yards and TDs. How are his hands Homer? He good on the pass?

Mose - Mike Daniels is bench pressing a small Buick......that dude is strong as hell.

I would be much more concerned with the DL if we were counting on freshmen or even redshirt freshmen on the DL. Instead we have guys that have been in the program for a long time...Daniel, Daniels, Binns, Bigach, Nardo, etc...plus a few young players (Carl Davis, in particular). I loved the fact that Ferentz said that Davis was close to breaking the two deeps last year and they thought about it. That should tell you something.

I think we will be smaller, yes, even if Davis cracks the starting four, but we will be quicker and will have experience. I'm more worried about the linebacking core than the DL. We are an injury away from being in trouble there...or at least very very inexperienced. We need Nielson back to full speed and Morris to step up as everyone know he will. If either of those two get injured...we will be inconsistent at best in the LB ranks.

Casey MacMillen's squat went from 230 to 580...pencil him in at right guard. Dude has a bit of the nasty too. I liked the way he played last year as a young player. The game wasn't too fast or big for him. I'm looking forward to the battles at the guard position. Whoever emerges, will have been tested in a big way. There are 5-6 guys battling for two spots. Should be very interesting.

Even more impressive was the way Nolan MacMillan played.

230? that can't be real. everyone in my HS's defensive backfield could do that much. i'll buy that he can do 580 now though, he's pretty thick.
