Anthony Nelson Going to the NFL

Great point. Depth was one of the biggest strengths of this defensive line. Golston told me after the Outback Bowl that he felt it was the different against Mississippi State. Iowa just kept the pressure on.

It's only going to get worse. The semi hurry-up a bunch of teams run to prevent substitutions is going to put a huge premium on going 8 deep on the line. That is one area our coaching staff is probably ahead of the curve.

I'm curious if these scholarships that opened up go to new recruits going over the 20 they already have. Or do they go to walk-ons, or JC players. Hopefully, KF has a plan.

So if we are going to become a factory for early draftees, I want more wins and better recruiting to go along with it.
It just sucks. It ain't gonna happen and given our reliance on developing guys, this new trend does not bode well for Iowa football. I really thought we had a legit shot at 10-11 wins next year and that soothed me when I went to my dark space a few times this year, now I'm getting a little worried.

What are your guesses? Simon was being talked up last spring, but have we seen him at all? What has the word been on Waggoner? Any other candidates you have heard about?

I still think there could be potential in taking a LB and converting them to DE, at least situationally.

I think AJE and CG will get more reps than did A Nelson and Hesse as starters next season. And I'm OK with that. Simon will be in his fourth year in the program. It's now or never for him. Waggoner moves up. Jack Kalenberger started coming on this season until he got hurt.

Iowa also signed three DEs in '19 so far. Dead period ends this week so coaches will start pounding pavement at high schools and JUCOs. Also could look into the grad transfer market.

I disagree about him not being an explosive rusher; you have to remember, he got on the field as a 245 lb RS Freshman. It wasn't because he was a physical presence, it was because he was quick around the edge. He grew into 275 lbs, but he still has great speed around the edge. Not AJE speed, but few have that.

I guess when I think of explosive I think of speed and power. Not just a guy with a good first step. Imo, he is a rotational guy and there is nothing wrong with that.

Meanwhile, Auburn's Derrick Brown, one of the top DT prospects in the nation and a fixture in 1st round mocks, is returning for his SR year.

OK That is it. I am done with this nonsense of going out early. I will be on the phone to these guys and let them know they cannot leave early.

I hate to lose these guys to the NFL. But if they all get drafted, that speaks well for the coaching staff and can be a yuge recruiting tool bince that’s what most of these guys have wanted since they were little.

It's hard to say. Depth next year will be an issue, and there are some tough road games for new guys/inexperienced guys to be thrown into, but there will be good surprises next year. I like Geno Stone a lot. It would be nice for it to click for Amani Jones next year - when he hits a guy, that guy goes down. Moss at safety seems like a natural. There will be others. As I noted above, getting freshmen in, at least for their 4 games, will be a must. There could be a couple of transition years to fully adapt to this trend, which may hurt Iowa next year, but Iowa isn't the only school going through it.

Well from what I gather this isn't a strong year for QB's in the draft. It has been said that someone like Stanley may receive a better than average opportunity this year to impress a team.
He was 9th out of 10 qbs on the draft board.

I think we should be less concerned about burning a redshirt if we think the kid is good and can play. Save a year for what purpose? Play any and all that come in if they are good enough and dont worry about 4 game lid.

We should all be proud of Anthony and of the entire program. Presumably, he's going to make a lot of money and this is a really happy situation for both Nelson and the Iowa program (although we're sad to lose him early).

But this trend is skyrocketing. Iowa (and all of college FB) should expect to see more 3rd year players leaving for the NFL and it's not slowing down.

Question - how does this structural change to CFB impact the Iowa program? In our current state (with Kirk and coaching staff, current conference structures, etc.), does this change make us better or worse compared to both the top teams and bottom teams of the Big 10?

Worse. Way worse vis a vis the top. Also worse against a program like Northwestern where they have a ton of 5 year guys. If we're stuck playing a bunch of 20 year olds and they have a bunch of 23 year olds, that doesn't bode well.
