Another question for Jon regarding 2014 season.

Jon,

You are on record as saying Kirk Ferentz will be able to coach the 2014 season.

Question 1: Is this just an opinion of yours or do you know from someone in the know that he is guaranteed another year? What if Iowa goes 0-3 down the stretch? Will Kirk still be the coach at Iowa next year?

Question 2: In your opinion, what does Kirk have to do next year (What record does Iowa have to get) to be able to coach in the 2015 season? Let's assume we go 6-6 this year.

If we go 6-6 this year, I don't know how he could possibly be the coach next year when 7 out of the last 9 years have been disappointing years for Iowa. And some people forget we were 5-4 after 9 games in the 2008 season. We were just about to finish off 4 straight disappointing years in a row until we kicked the last second FG against PSU. Then after 1 great year (SO 1 year in the last 9, Hawkeye Fans were super excited about the season 9 games into the season) we go on another 4 year disappointing run. I don't know of any other coach in college football that could have that many disappointing years in a row and still be the coach the next year. Unless of course you are given a buyout as large as KF's. And Yes I believe an 8-4 regular season defines success at Iowa.

Thanks Jon.

We can go 0-3 the rest of this season and KF will still be the coach at Iowa in 2014.

What is your reason behind that? Is it because of the buyout? The buyout is $17 million after this season and $15 million after next season. Does an extra $2 million make that big of a difference especially when each Big 10 team gets in excess of $20 million per year from the BTN and that will grow significantly in the next few years when the Big 10 renegotiates their contract with ESPN.

I guess I really don't know anything about what Barta and/or the alumni, boosters, donors, etc. are all thinking.. But I have got to believe that the buyout is a big part of it. I honestly am not sure that KF doesn't get at least 2-3 more years, unless things really go south, like missing bowl games the next couple years. (I don't see that happening with next year's schedule set up the way it is)

I also personally believe that the bar is low enough that "simply getting a bowl" is enough for KF to keep his job. Although like I said, I am not on the inside so don't know what people REALLY are thinking. I'd be curious to know the truth.

They really can't afford the buyout either right as they are spending a crap ton o money on new facilities.

Bart'a will do anything to keep kf right now to avoid the payout because not only is it a lot of money but making that payout is his contract mistake for everyone to see. Barta is hoping and paying kf turns it around so his mistake doesn't have to be made in firm of payment for everyone to see

No, I don't think the extra $2 million makes that big of difference. I believe he will be the coach in 2015 as well.

As someone already alluded to, I have to think that Barta will do anything and everything to avoid having to dump KF. As soon as Kirk is gone, Barta is gone. I think KF gets next year and probably the season after no matter what.

Honestly, I think Barta should already be gone. Bad KF contract + Iowa doing poorly in sports across the board. He does bring in the money, though, and has done a good job with facilities.

Just my opinion on him getting next year.

Not gonna go down a road of 'what he has to do' since I don't hold the strings to his fate one way or another.

That said they can't lose Saturday

I think KF will be the coach at Iowa as long as Barta is the AD at Iowa. Even if we finish 0-3 this season, I cannot fathom Barta firing KF. No way, no how. He will essentially be signing the death warrant on his own career. He gave KF the contract, after all.

That's a good point. As long as KF has another year, Barta has another year to be redeemed. If KF is gone, Barta will always be the guy that made the dumb contract.

If Iowa loses out then it's not going to be Barta's hand that forces the action. It's going to be the boosters and the fans because attendance the rest of the season is going to plummet. Also, Barta is going to do what he needs to save his own butt after the contract he gave to Ferentz.

If Iowa can win 1 out of the next 3 and get to a bowl game, Ferentz has 2014 to get the job done. If they have a losing season in 2014 with the schedule that they have then Ferentz is gone.

People always forget that with buying out Ferentz's contract comes finding another coach to fill his spot and a quality coach is going to cost a pretty penny unless they want a crap coach.

Just my opinion.

I don't have any idea of how many more seasons Ferentz has here but I do know I don't want Barta selecting and signing the next coach.

the line of questioning,

well then if this?,

what about this?,

what about if that?
