Another Nebraska player

Lol this cracked me up, my cousins are Van Kalsbeek's

Ever try finding something to eat on a Sunday in Rock Valley?
Funny you say that. My buddy and I stopped at the Subway in Hull a few months ago to grab something on the way home from Sioux Falls. Wasn’t paying attention when I walked up to the door and just about dislocated my shoulder trying to open a locked door. Like when you grab a box you expect to be empty but it’s heavy as hell.

I get the mom and pop places being closed on Sundays due to their personal beliefs, but goddamn Subway? I’ve never seen a closed Subway in my life. I asked a guy at work who lives there and he said the only way the city council would approve it was if they agreed to close Sundays.

There’s definitely some separation of church and state stuff going on but F it, I don’t live there.

Love the fact his last name is Farmer.
Can't blame the kids, what else you going to do in that shit hole state besides get high drive around and figure out how the hell you just crossed a street names Osborne when you in fact are driving on said named street.
Be quite the trip actually!

And NW Iowa cultural norms. In my town you can and do get "spoken to" about mowing your lawn on Sunday.

Which is why I mow my lawn on Sunday.

Meh, I work on stuff just about every Sunday.
Actually if I'm mowing or dinking around in the shop, it's relaxing to me. I think a lot when doing that stuff and yes I have thought a lot about God in that time. So....,....,.

My employer came right out at a quarterly meeting and said weed is still a no go if gets legalized in Iowa.

Kind of a bummer because I'm not a drinker and I've heard weed gives you the mellow of your first hour of drinking without the non-fun stuff. Never tried it but if it was legal and my job allowed I'd give it a shot out of curiosity.

I'm sure they are out there, but I've really not come across too many people past the age of 30 who haven't at least taken a hit off a joint / bong hit / or something. You are a unique animal. I was in Burge in 1980...you got a contact high if you walked down my wing any time after 8:00pm on a weekday, and pretty much any time on the weekend. Of the probably 20 dorm rooms on the floor, 7-8 had a constant bud burning. My parents arriving early on Saturday during a game week was always an interesting endeavor. I'd always throw out that "it's just a few kids that have to ruin it for the rest of us"...please note I was probably high while saying this. LOL.

Absolutely. To think otherwise is totally obtuse.

Just because they’re football players doesn’t make them any different the rest of the 18-21 demographic. Like at any college campus, some will, some won’t.

Being under the impression that because these 100+ kids are football players somehow scares them into goody goody land is ignorant at best.

As 30-50+ year old guys with families and jobs we need, we may be more apt to hold off to not get in trouble. But these young kids getting miles of high-quality ass, regional fame, money (yes, money), and media attention thrown at them on a regular basis makes them feel like superheroes. A few of them are going to be excess risk takers.

Eventually, it will be treated like alcohol and employers will follow suit with changes to their employment restrictions. It's coming and should be coming. Right now, in states where it's legal, companies that supply company cars, jobs that require interaction that could harm others (construction/doctors, etc) will hold firm about no marijuana in your system at all times. Once the Federal Government gets on board...then it's treated like alcohol, minus all the alcoholic side effects like liver cirrhosis, etc. The long term effects of pot are much less complicated from a health standpoint...aside from what Jeff Sessions may tell you.

You sure it’s not all that crab grass they are worried about?

Insurance. Anything dealing with machinery will never allow it.
However, there are good ways and bad ways to test.

Mouth swabs tests only go positive if you''ve used marijuana in the last 12-24 hours, which is all you need to know about as an employer.

Out here in Oregon, employers go with the swab, as it still protects them from insurance, and doesn't remove the workforce or unnecessarily invade into a worker's private life.

That makes me a unique animal I guess!

I've never indulged, not marijuana, not cigarettes, Quaaludes, cocaine, heroin, hash, none of it. Not first hand anyway. But I walked down those same wings in Burge and Currier Halls just a few years after you did, so there was still some second hand exposure. There were bong hits going on regularly just one room down from me.

Well...I didn't try Heroin...at least I didn't ace your list above. All the others, well, guilty.

It's funny...Burge is a big part of my college memory bank...it had a smell that I equate with the whole experience...kind of that marijuana / smelly feet kind of scent...I'm not sure how to describe it...you liked it, but you weren't sure if you should.

Burge always smelled so damp and musty, especially early in the year when the air conditioners were going.

Stanley hall had a similiar odor but that was an all girls dorm so you can't blame drunk males pissing in the hallways for that one.

Currier didn't have air conditioning in the rooms. And every summer they would apply a fresh coat of paint to the walls and that paint smell, plus the late August heat at move in time, would overwhelm you.

Stanley Hall had an air conditioned study lounge right on the corner near North Hall, with a huge piano in it. Students from Currier would flock to that lounge the first two or three weeks of the year because 1) it was hot and stuffy in Currier and 2) the regular study lounges in Stanley Hall would be used for temp housing.

Up to ten women would occupy those temp housing lounges early in the year. They were at the very end of each floor overlooking the Iowa River near the Hancher foot bridge. Think women can't host wild parties, think again! Those lounges had some of the wildest parties you could imagine. What memories! Now you probably can't access any dorm without a badge or by registering in the front lobby, and being caught with alcohol in your room would probably start a chain of disciplinary action leading to eviction from the dorms on repeat offenses.

I've never said "women can't host wild parties"...but I will say, when you throw out the word "host"...well, that signals lame in my vernacular. I'm thinking those temp housing parties may have just been wild to you...you know...the girl who didn't do any drugs, smoke marijuana, etc. I'm sure there was Zima everywhere. LOL. I'm just kidding...I'm sure there were dogs and cats living together...mass hysteria type of stuff going on.

There were women kicking my ass in quarters and making you chug for sloppy dice when playing Mexican or Six-Five-Four or Shutbox and jamming to "Purple Rain" and generally raising the roof. That's what was going on.:)
