An honest question re officiating in the Purdue game.

Aside from the missed call on McCabe's shot that hit the rim and shouldn't have been a shot clock violation, what did you think of the officiating? And that rebound, had the whistle not been blown, went to Purdue and not because Iowa heard the whistle and stopped playing, either.

Please separate your feelings about Ed Hightower from your honest assessment. Then if anyone that comments is a coach or an official, please let me know that (and at what level) as well, in your critique.

Thanks in advance.

Witnessing the game in person, I thought there were quite a few missed calls. However, when I got home and watched the game on tv, it did seem that most of the "controversial" calls were at worst 50/50 (besides the shot clock violation). The game wasn't really decided by the officiating, which is pretty refreshing considering its so often been used as a scapegoat on this board when we lose the close ones.

Other than the blown shot clock violation call, I thought the crew did reasonably well. I was holding my breath whether Eddie was going to give us the benefit of the doubt when a Purdue player charged Jarryd in the second half, but he did. Pretty obvious Jarryd had position; with Eddie that's never a guarantee.

Brommer is a foul magnet in Eddie's eyes and I wondered about a couple of his; I thought they weren't anything more than usual contact in the run of play. I also questioned possession on a few out of bounds situations but on replay it looked like they got them right. Some of those happen so quickly it's hard to see who had last contact.

The other thing I thought was good about the officiating was that in the closing moments Eddie didn't interject himself and hurt our chances of winning. The game was decided by the players on the floor.

When Eddie blows a pretty obvious call like the shot-clock non-violation,and when he disallows that Cartwright shot at the halftime buzzer that subsequently is shown to be clearly a good shot, and you lose in OT, it undercuts any credibility Hightower could hope to have with the fans.
These not bang-bang calls, when there is video replay available for the Wisky call,at least, and when the shot clock call is only about ten feet from where he is standing. He is old,so maybe his vision is fading? That is not a thought that gives confidence in the rest of his calls.

I have not checked the replay of several out of bounds calls that went against the Hawks, down on the lane, where Eddie makes the call, but JuJuan Johnson appearred to be the only one that touched one ball that went out,and he gave it to Purdue.

In general, the refs let them play yesterday, which is ok by me. Fairly consistent, which is another big plus, after he let them play in the first half vs MSU,then changed up and called them tight the 2nd half..which I hate.

Eddie needs to hang them up,imo. The game is too fast for him,and his eyes are failing him.

The crew did a good job in my opinion. Even the blown shot clock call wouldn't have mattered as Johnson had possession anyway. I saw some missed travel calls on both sides. And I think JJ got away with a couple of over the back calls. Other than that nothing really stood out.

He doesn't appear to embrace the team concept of officiating. He's far too ready to make the call himself, right or wrong, rather than look for help, and often look like an a$$ doing so. Time to retire, Eddie.

They called PU early on their hand-grabbing. PU's guards will place their hands all over the other teams guards on the perimeter if the refs let them. The refs called that close early, which I think really affected the flow of the game in a good way.

They did let Purdue get away with a lot of their riding Cartwright and Marble down the floor. It was like they let the ticky-tack stuff go for Purdue because they did more obvious stuff all the time. But then on the other end we got knocked for some ticky-tack calls. Brommer got the hose. His first two fouls were legit. His third and fourth fouls were crap.

It would be nice if Mel would get some calls. It seems lately at the start of the games he goes inside gets hit on the arms every time and no whistle and it takes him awhile to get into the flow. Especially when he gets called for the same fouls on D. When Mel scores early Mel scores often!

The thing is that Eddy and his crew could have went to the monitor to actually see that the ball hit the rim even if it was still Purdue ball or not. It's about getting the call right unlike most of Hightowers's calls. Big 10 needs to do what the Pac 10 is doing with football officals, get newer, younger ones in there.

The fastest way to explain good officiating is to NOT know who they were. The only official I can ALWAYS tell who is in the game is Hightower... I couldn't tell you the names of the other two officials in the game yesterday. Can you?

Hightowers two calls within 5 seconds on Brommer were more telling than his refusal to correct the shot clock violation. The first on Brommer was so confusing to both the Iowa and Purdue players that they all stopped like what? Look at the replay and you will see the other 2 officials were confused why he blew the whistle too. More often than not Eddie calls fouls on perceptions than reality.
Bottom Line: An official should go unnoticed in a game... he shouldn't be the focus. More often than not Eddie is the star of the game... and that is not right.

The most SHOCKING call was Eddie correctly called Jujuan Johnson for the charge on Cole. It was the most amazing play of the game outside the putback dunk by Basabe.

Funny thing about Hightower's bad call on the shot-clock. If anything it may have actually helped Iowa.

Purdue clearly had the rebound and could have tossed a quick outlet. Stopping play allowed Iowa got get back and set up on defense.

It was a badly blown call, but not one that made a difference in the game.

I think it was one of the better officiated games I've seen in the B10. They officiated traveling and the hand check consistently throughout the game.

The crew clearly missed the shot clock call but that's about it.

I didn't have a good look at the 3rd. I think everyone was confused on whether he was calling it on Cole or Brommer, he probably could have gotten either. The 4th was a good call.

I can't agree Duff. The Purdue guards where consistently mugging our guards in the second half, and rarely did they make the call.

This. It's like they called it, and realized that it wasn't stopping Purdue from doing it, and just got tired of blowing the whistle on it.

But we're discussing officiating with Duff, who has clearly demonstrated himself to be a VERY biased member in these discussions. He's incapable of ripping on officials. I'm more than capable of admitting officials made the right call (I do it a lot in football, and I also can give the Cartwright half-courter to the officials. I didn't think he got it off on replays.). But Duff will always defend the officials.

LOL, since when does "being incapable of ripping officials" mean I'm biased. I chose not to "rip officials" because i can appreciate just how difficult a job it is. That doesn't mean I'm incapable of being unbiased or I'm unable to say when a bad call is made.

The world isn't all in black and white stripes man. Case in point the shot clock violation, they clearly kicked it. That said I'm not going to "rip the officials" because they kicked it. I'm curious to know why they didn't get it right, and I'm curious to know what was said in that conference after the initial signal.

But whatever floats your boat. If "ripping officials" makes you feel better so be it. I guess I just never understood the point? The call has already been made, ******** and moaning won't change it.
