Ames Basketball Team

I definitely think the current Ames team would win this matchup, but the 2004 Ames team was awesome when they wanted to play hard (this was the year they outed their coach because Alex Thompson couldn't get along with him). They also had Ross Marsden and another 6-10 kid starting (three 6-9/6-10 starters). Austen Arnaud was their PG and their SG was a state track champ. That team was a very talented, though very dysfunctional team that could give the current Ames squad fits.

USA Today that year had you guys as the number 2 team in the country

I was on that team. We were ranked as high as 16th in the Country that year. To be honest I think Ames would probably beat us. Although we blew teams out that year by and average of 29 pts a game and at that time there were a lot more Division 1 players in the CIML then there are now.

Our Center in 97 was 6'11. in 96 we had a guy that was 6'10 also so that year we had two starters that were over 6'10".
Our other guard played at Truman ST and they went to the Div II Final Four so he was a solid player.

I think the Mason City team would beat this Ames team. The play in the state league those years was ridiculous. Especially the guard play. I even think that the 96' Ankeny team would beat this Ames team. Sears and PJ Dauterive would have torched Ames. Those 96'-97' years you had Sears and PJ at Ankeny, Harriman and DeanO at MC. David Newman was RIDICULOUS at hoover, Ricky Davis up in D'port. Sears and co. took out Davis in the state title game. Sears was the most fundamentally sound player I've ever seen play in this state, and PJ was literally unstoppable at the HS level.

Sears went on to be a top 50 player in the history of the Mo. Valley league as a 4 time starter and went to the sweet 16.

Dauterive could have played big time ball if it were not for....extra cirricular activities.

Dave Newman started for Northwestern and then ended up at Drake. Injury plagued career hurt his production.

1 or 2 other guys from that Hoover team played D1 ball as well and they won the '98 state title.

I'm sure I'm missing some players as well. Just going off of memory.

Ames is very good, but the level of competition that they are facing is not even close to the competition that was around back then.

Barnes is good. But, after watching him in the Waukegon game on TV, I would not call him the best player in the country.

He didn't really do anything that "wow'd" me.
