Always amazed standing on visitors sideline

At how little room there is between the front row of the stands and the playing field, having been standing over there today. No wonder Kinnick is considered one of the toughest places to play.

lol could you imagine if they put the student section behind the visitors bench. That would be epic.

I agree, they should put the student section behind the visitors bench!!!

Michigan pretty much does it at their home games!!

Yes, it could get ugly.

It actually happened in 1952 I believe - an Illinois player punched an Iowa student and broke his jaw.

Iowa and Illinois discontinued the series for 15 years!!!

Ask Zabel about it some time - there is a lot of history there!!

Yes, there was fruit thrown from the stands in that game...Jim has told me about that one

Yeah, I think putting the students behind the visitor's bench would be a mistake, but I wouldn't mind having the students behind the Iowa bench like they use to. Up until 2005 it was a great honor for the students to be behind the players. We would cheer on specific players as they went in and out of the game and could even listen into the sideline huddles. Mo Brown (while in uniform shook our hands and introduced himself ... like we wouldn't know who he was) even got my group of friends and I to get a "CJ Jones" cheer going during the 2003 Iowa v Illinois game after CJ had just gotten waived from a pro team (I think the Browns). We ended up getting most of the student section in on it. After they moved the student's section to the corner of the end zone those things just don't happen anymore.

I have been concerned about the erosion of the kinnick home field ''edge'' since the re-modeling seemed to reduce the noise level on the field, and then last year the fast new turf that was installed. Two huge factors in home field edge are noise and playing surface...and both have been mitigated with the improvements. Now, visitors have no transition to a strange playing surface, and could just as well be on their own turf as most have the same stuff...which may actually have helped Iowa on the road last year also, and the noise is not quite as compacted down towards the field as in the past...this is the year we really need to bring back the roar at Kinnick vs ISU,OSU,PSU,MSU,and Wis....must go clean at home this year to win the league.

How have the renovations made it quieter? That's not registering with me.

Here are a couple of shots I took on the sidelines from the Wisconsin game in '08. Kind of gives you an idea of how close the stands are to the players.

I recall reading several posts opining that the new larger PB and wraparound south end zone have made it *louder* on the field.

Moving students away from the field was a mistake. Players loved it, students love it, and opposing QBs HATED it when calling signals.

^^Agree^^

The biggest change in Kinnick has not been the renovations, the billboard, the press box, or the new turf. It was shoving the students back in the corner.
