yeah we saw that coming. Last time out it looked like only 3 might go at 157. I can't get the coaches poll to open but neither guy is in the RPI. I'm assuming their winning % is high enough that they will be at least bronze standard but making it as a WC is going to be tough, I'd imagine. Splitting time may hurt their chances.

That is ridiculous that all you have to do is make weight in the Big 12 at 174, 197 and 285 and you are a national qualifier. Also the Big 12 gets 74% automatic bids while the Big Ten gets 51%.

What they need to do is give each conference the same % of automatic bids and then have a committee like in basketball select the wild cards.

So you'd rather see equal qualifiers rather than the best wrestlers make nationals? Look at the weights in question where the big 5 gets everyone through. 174 could be argued to only have 4 but 197 and HWT should get all 5 in.
Why on earth would you want the same % of bids for every conference? There are 12 qualifiers so you want 8.33% of each qualifiers wrestlers to come to nationals? (is that right? 12 tournaments each gets an equal % share of the guys going??) There are some guys in every conference who it would be a joke if they went to the NCAA just because of a percentage while a HWT from the Big 5 stayed home because of it.

I'm sorry but that is just silly and showing a complete bias towards the big ten/Iowa and against the big 12.

I don't have a problem with this for the Big 12. Look at the reps at these weights:

174
1. Dwyer - NEB (#4)
2. Benefiel - OSU (#6)
3. James - OU (#17)
4. Burk - ISU (#20)
5. Henderson - Mizzou (UR, but a 19-13 record with W over #6 Benefiel, #8 Covington, #14 Griffin, #20 Burk)

197
1. Varner - ISU (#1)
2. Brester - NEB (#2)
3. Lapotsky - OU (#6)
4. Haynes - MU (#10)
5. Gelogaev - OSU (#11)

HWT
1. Rosholt - OSU (#1)
2. Zabriskie - ISU (#5)
3. Ellis - MU (#7)
4. Lane - NEB (#13)
5. Fernandez - OU (#14)

Who would you propose should stay home if they had a bad conference tournament? Maybe Henderson, but look at his quality wins.

All the guys at these weights have clearly done what they needed to do in the regular season and earned automatic spots at NCAAs. If someone from the Big 10 goes 0-2 but had a strong regular season, they're going to qualify for NCAAs.

It seems to work at the high school level and one district doesn't get more bids than another, each district gets 2 and some districts are harder than others and I don't hear people complaining what a joke the high school state tournaments are. I know some weights are loaded in some conferences but to me if you can't win ONE match in your conferece tournament you don't deserve an NCAA bid, plain and simple.

Maybe not a % for each conference but it should be the only automatic qualifers are conference champs and runners-up then select wild cards. That way a tougher weight in one conference could get 2 or more guys from a weight if they deserved it. You could still end up with all 5 from one weight in the Big 12 going, but at least they wouldn't know it for sure and wouldn't want to leave their fate in someone else's hands. I'm not saying they wouldn't try knowing all they had to do was make weight, but knowing the only sure way to qualify was to get 1st or 2nd would create a little more motivation.

So a champ and the runner up go then it's all WC's. Again you're going to have runner ups going that don't deserve to go compared to this system. And, who do you think the WC's are going to be? That's what this system is doing with the coaches poll and RPI. So Z and Ellis are 1 and 2 for the big 12 HWTs you don't think the other 3 are going to get your WC's? When the WC's were chose every year before the current system do you know how much politics came into it? You do NOT want WC's being chosen by anyone without some sort of qualifications like the current system has implemented.

As for comparing to high school there are wrestlers every year at state that got through due to a weaker district. With the NCAA we have a way to fix that with a system like this. Still not perfect but a lot better than the state system based on geography rather than success on the mat.

I just think it's unfortunate that the "Big 12" can only find 5 schools willing to participate in wrestling. On the surface it does seem unfair that the Big 12 gets so many automatic qualifiers, but as was pointed out in some of the weights anyways it makes sense.

Which qualifying tournament does UNI participate in? Have interest in their 74 pounder.

They're in the West Regional along with the following teams:

Air Force
North Dakota State
Northern Colorado
South Dakota State
Wyoming

nothing we can do about the big 12...iowa should have no problems and the ones that qualify are the ones that are gonna score points...the ones that slip in probably won't make a huge difference...but then again every point counts

So it looks like he needs to be in the top 2. For a qualifying tournament, do they wrestle back for a "true 2nd"?

I believe it is up to each qualifier/conference to decide if they will wrestle for true places or not. I can't imagine why no one would. Not something you want to get wrong when an extra 7 minutes on the mat sends the most deserving person
