The All-American Basketball Alliance announced in a news release Sunday evening that it intends to start its inaugural season in June and hopes Augusta will be one of 12 cities with a team.

"Only players that are natural born United States citizens with both parents of Caucasian race are eligible to play in the league," the statement said.

Don "Moose" Lewis, the commissioner of the AABA, said the reasoning behind the league's roster restrictions is not racism.

"There's nothing hatred about what we're doing," he said. "I don't hate anyone of color. But people of white, American-born citizens are in the minority now. Here's a league for white players to play fundamental basketball, which they like."

Lewis said he wants to emphasize fundamental basketball instead of "street-ball" played by "people of color." He pointed out recent incidents in the NBA, including Gilbert Arenas' indefinite suspension after bringing guns into the Washington Wizards locker room, as examples of fans' dissatisfaction with the way current professional sports are run.

 
The last paragraph that you quoted has to be the most telling about how this guy really thinks. If it were really a matter of street ball Jason Williams used to play more like "street ball" than anyone else in the league...I think he's gotten away from that for the most part this year with the Magic.

Of course I'm talking about the white Jason Williams...not the one who killed someone which I think is also fairly "street".
 
The real question is would you be eligbile. I'm judging by the "fro" and the fact that you are a "snappy dresser" that you are not of 100% caucasion decent
 
Just defending yourself that you are not racist does NOT make you racist. Since white people are in the minority and do like to play a certain style of basketball, why not give them an outlet? Stereotypes are created from reality.
 
Hey man don't lump me into your white fundamentalist group. When I ball...it's above the rim. As a matter of fact...I've broken...that's right busted down...three LT hoops in my day (for those of you who are a little behind the times...LT means Little Tykes). When they saw me coming to the backyard with a miniature basketball in hand...they started putting extra water in the bottom of the hoop to hold it down...still didn't work cuz I'm a beast.

However, there is nothing preventing them from playing in the NBA. If there were better white American players, they would be in the NBA. If there was any factor besides lack of talent keeping whites out of the NBA, this could make sense.

I can't imagine how this appeals to anyone besides guys who like medicore basketball and are afraid of the hip hop culture.
 
Off the topic, but I was just searching online for highlights of Roy Marble Jr.'s Southfield Lathrup basketball team, and one of the links that popped up was a home page for a Southfield hoops alum, Mike Chappell. He finished his college career at MSU (played on their last NC team) and has played professionally overseas since. Here's an excerpt from the bio on that page:

"When he isn't playing basketball, Mike Chappell enjoys spending time with his son, Isaiah Chappell, who was born in Auckland, New Zealand on March 16, 2005 and consequently holds dual citizenship. The New Zealand National basketball team, the Tall Blacks, has jokingly extended an open invitation for young Chappell to join their roster one day."

Nothing like a straightforward, descriptive nickname for a basketball team. I guess they're not so hung up on being P.C. in New Zealand. :)

To be fair, New Zealands national rugby team (which is almost all white) is called the All Blacks.

Is this really something to get bent out of shape about? The way you described it in your first post made it sound like this is nothing more than an organized pick-up league.
 
I just hope they realize that even some all white teams have a little "street style" in them...
