All-State Starting Line-up

Ok. Iowa, Iowa St and UNI all look to be on the road to the dance this year. Taking players from each team, what would be your all-state starting line-up and bench rotation? Have fun.

I'll pass because i would be forced to put guys from ISU on it and i would just assume play a pickup game against Woody with no goggles than do that.

This was actually heavier on ISU players than I expected. Morris and Niang were no-brainers, IMO. I went with McKay because he's basically a more polished version of Olaseni. Uthoff vs. Tuttle took me a little bit of thought, but I like Uthoff's overall versatility slightly more than Tuttle's.

No one wants to play along but I will. The only reason Woodbury isn't on this team is because we're going to run and press in a way that would make Tom Davis and Nolan Richardson proud! Starters are listed 1st.

1 - Morris and Ricks
2 - Hogue and Jok
3 - Uthoff and Hogue
4 - White and Niang and Tuttle (interchangeable)
5 - McKay and Olaseni

I love the Hawks. The intent here is obviously to have a little fun.

Morris is a shoe-in because he has such low turnovers, can hit a shot and so consistent. He runs a team very well. I'm not surprised it's IA State heavy either. I'd also have long in as he's a clutch shooter. DJJ has fallen off a bit. It's hard not getting Oleseni some minutes but there are just so many good players. I'd probably have to somehow get Tuttle in there as he's a special player, but can he consistently go up against the top power 5 conferences or would he be neutralized. McKay is just damn fun to watch.

I think it depends on who you have coaching. Hoi-ball is a different kind of basketball than Jacobson plays. I think so far, UNI isn't getting nearly enough credit. Especially Tuttle. He absolutely OWNED our bigs.

I think Tuttle, Uthoff, Jok, Jesperson and Washpun if they were added to a Hoiberg coached ISU team would fit in amazingly well. White would too, because he runs the floor so well and is a real FINISHER. Not sure how well he sets up with that offense where everyone needs to be a 3-point shooter and free up the lane, though. Clearly Uthoff, Jok, Tuttle and Jesperson do. Tuttle can shoot the 3, so he and Niang would be tough to stop. Maybe Tuttle is the 2nd shift center.

So, first shift, I would have the unanimous starters - Morris and Niang in there. Then, I would add Jok, Jesperson and Uthoff. Lots of height and shooting. the second shift would be more along the lines of a UNI approach - tough D and rebounding with point guards who can break down the defense and dish.

Clearly Washpun, Tuttle and Naz Long and Hogue with Whitey is an offense that crashes the boards and still can shoot and has a bona fide post player. I think that would be a nice change of pace 2nd line. That would be a seriously stout defense. On offense, they would definitely get to the free throw line! Since we can have 12, I would have a token Drake player - Ricks, Jr. as a 3rd point guard and possibly Oleseni, both for a post defender in the 2nd line and he can get out and run, if needed. He's as fast as McKay and may be a better rebounder. Definitely a better FT shooter.

It's funny, the 1st team UNI point guard is left out, but I think Washpun has such physical gifts, it would be hard to leave him off.

If they ran into a giant team like Kentucky or Texas, they could go big with Tuttle at Center, Niang at the 4, Uthoff at the 3, Long and Morris in the backcourt. Spread that defense way out and that is a really good shooting team from 3 and still pretty tall. You could bring in Jok or Jesperson at the 2 and get even taller. Might be a tough 2-3 zone that they could play on defense .. hard to see any lanes. If you need more rebounding? insert White or Hogue at the 3 for Uthoff, and you would still have plenty of shooters.

In the end, If Hoiberg is the coach, he probably says that his starting 5 will be the all-star starting 5, UNIs starting 5 is the 2nd line and he drafts Uthoff and White to plug in wherever needed.

There is so much talent in the state of Iowa this year it's not even funny. But anyone who makes the starting five without Tuttle has not watched much basketball. Title will likely be an All-American this year. I would think you could start on and all Iowa team. Hard to leave white off the team, but Iowa State has some studs.

Can't disagree there. I think Tuttle has to be in the mix just because he also can hit the 3 pt shot. So many great players!!

That lineup would give up 100+ points. Btw, White is gonna be 2nd or 3rd in all-time scoring at Iowa.

Yeah, because McKay (who just cracked ISU's starting lineup) is such a three point threat. Can he even shoot a 15 foot jump shot? I've watched a lot of ISU games this year and he shoots dunks or shots off the block. His furthest shot in any game is a free throw.

Of course, I'm assuming when you say "everyone" you really do mean everyone and not everyone but McKay.

I did NOT have McKay on my all-star team. I would choose White and Oleseni over McKay if it were up to me. If Hoiberg were putting together an all-star team, I think he would prefer that they could ALL hit the 3, which spreads the defense out and if the 3 isn't there, then Niang can take his guy to the hoop. Tuttle would fit in amazingly well, there. Kaminski would be absolutely perfect, but "we don't need no stinking Badge(r)s!"

As far as who to draft first? I have to agree with WindsorHawk - Morris. Followed immediately by Niang and Tuttle. Uthoff has so many tools in his toolbox, it would be hard not to draft him next. After that ... shooters, shooters and more shooters. for picks 10, 11 and 12 I would probably go with Oleseni, White and Hogue, to get every rebound and still run the floor. Pretty good defenders, too.

I think Morris is the best passing guard by far. There's a bigger drop at this position than any other. I can live with White, Niang or Tuttle at the 4. If I couldn't get Morris I would take Uthoff for the match up nightmare, defense and all around.

Don't need a C, as the coach would be Freddie and he has shown he doesn't need a C. My only subs would be Gesell, Tuttle/White. Freddie only plays 7 anyway.
