After sleeping 2 nights on it...

I think KF got such a bad taste in his mouth from playing out west and losing in non con years ago has just skewed his thinking.

You imply in this line that it's Kirk that schedules the games. Iowa, like every other school (including high schools), has the athletic director make out the schedule. The schedule is set a minimum of one year in advance but typically for college football, it's set two to five years in advance. Some schools allow the coach to have some input into the decision about who is played, but typically is is all on the athletic director.

I agree with the scheduling, but truthfully the only problem I have with scheduling the Bison is them being an FCS program. In all honesty I'd rather play a program of their talent level as opposed to Miami or ISU as dictated by the score. The problem is that despite their success, and the fact they may legitimately be a better opponent than those being scheduled by most teams in OOC play, they are still viewed as a FCS opponent. You don't win 5 straight championships at any level without skill. No excuse for Iowa's performance on Saturday, but its unfortunate that a great FCS opponent is viewed as an inferior FCS program that humiliated Iowa.

How many saw that NDSU got votes for the top 25 this week.... and they are not even in FBS.

Yeah I can't say I feel any better really either...
The offense looked terrible. I can sorta see the D getting beat up as much as they were on the field. Iowa was just so sloppy on O. Be it blocking and overall executing. CJ played poorly for him and he won't like watching the tape either. He's got to improve his pocket awareness and throwing the ball away. He's taking shots he doesn't have to it's as simple as that.
Why doesn't Greg "Derp Derp" Davis ROLL THE POCKET ever?!?! When CJ is on the run he is the most lethal. I swear our coaching staff has about 25 plays on offense and defense

I actually feel worse now than I did right after the game.....

After going back and looking at the replay, several things stood out to me that don't bode well:

1. Cole Croston and Boone Myers looked to have regressed from last year in terms of pass blocking. Now, that might have something to do with crappy line calls being called by LeGrand. But there was one pass play where it looked like NDSU fooled those two so much on the left side that neither literally blocked anyone and CJ got smashed.

2. Wadley looks to be hurt worse than was led on. AIRBHG strikes again?

3. There's a reason Bo Bower shouldn't be on the field. In 2014, we got jet-sweeped to death by teams realizing how bad of a run stopper he is. So now our answer is to put him on the weak side and, lo and behold, the majority of rushing plays by NDSU were to where? Yep, the weakside. And who got consistently blocked out of the play? Yep, you guessed it.

4. CJ looks like a shell of his former self from the waist down. He can't scramble, which takes away a big part of his game of throwing on the run or tucking and running.

5. It's now apparent after 3 games why Brandon Snyder was a walkon and not a scholarship player.

. Please show me or tell me where this play is that Croston and Myers were 'fooled' and neither 'literally' didn't block anyone and CJ got smashed? Are you talking about the play at about the 13:50 mark in the 3rd quarter? Where Iowa is in 'zone' pass protection and Myers blocks the DT, but the DE loops to the inside where Legrand and ESPECIALLY Daniels lets him run right by them and 'smash' CJ. Because that play has NOTHING to do with either Croston or Myer doing anything 'wrong'. Or is there another play that I missed?

. They didn't run to the 'weakside'....lol. And NONE of their big gains had anything to do with Bower. He needs to handle cut blocks better, but he was never out of 'position' Now Jewell on the other hand...(See my thread on chasing ghost)...and Taylor had big problems. I already talked about Jewell, but Taylor had a really bad game and was 'bad' in every big gain run or 'pass' that NDSU had (except the last QB draw). The first big play they had, they delayed the TE, and Taylor 'lost' him (he was his responsibility). They did it again later in the game. They delayed the TE while Taylor was supposed to be in 'man' on him and Taylor managed to lose him. King and Snyder chew his but about it after the play as you can see in the replay. On the first long run, where JEWELL is 'chasing ghosts' and vacates his 'hole', Taylor doesn't attack the LOS like the SS is supposed to and gets absolutedly trucked by a little slot receiver, with Snyder saving a TD. Then on the next long run, Taylor is slow coming up and completely whiffs on the tackle allowing the breakaway. I would love to watch tape with some of you, because I have NO idea what you are looking at? Snyder saved several TD's (he didn't play a 'great' game but certainly wasn't responsible for their big plays), but you guys blame Snyder when it was Taylor who played really poorly. Give me specifics and prove me wrong.............

Well, you had two new offensive lineman so I suspect it takes time to teach that protection with the roll out and getting everyone on the same page. I suspect they were keeping it pretty base for Legrand and the other guy. You know Kirk, he's not going to do it unless it is perfect in practice. I think he thought might be better or they could get away with pass protecting straight up. Didn't turn out that way and Beathard took a pretty good hit from his blindside.

Just to confirm, you have a bigger issue with Jewell than Bower? Your post seems to imply that and I just want to be sure. For the record, I don't think Bower is bad, but he's not as good as Nieman and not even close to Jewell.

I agree on the Taylor, Snyder point and also about LD missing blocks... But Croston and Myers did not have a good game regardless. I'll concede that line calls, missed rb blitz pickup made it seem worse than it was, but running for 35 yards, stacked box or not, sumpin not right with the oline.

The OC and DC are as much to blame, if not more than the players.

Yes I'm aware of the chain of command but there's no way that any non conference game that Iowa's scheduled the last however long wasn't signed off by KF and it wouldn't have been if not. Make no mistake much like at some other schools that have had long tenured head coaches Barta answers to KF especially on something like this. And he has the last 2 or 3 contracts now.

You will never ever ever ever ever ever ever convince me that beating an FCS school is something to crow about.

Fewer scholarships - crappier competition - crappier facilities - fewer 4/5stars - (in theory) lesser coaches.

It should've never been scheduled. And Kirk should've vetoed it.

AND IF YOU THINK BARTA GETS TO OVER-RIDE ANY OF KIRK'S WISHES - YOU HAVEN'T BEEN PAYING ATTENTION TO THE 17yr CONTRACTAPALOOZA that's been discussed on these boards ad nauseam.

Yup and there were 2 other ones he shoulda done something different with too... The ISU game will come to an end I think... The pressure to put together a competitive schedule to get to the playoffs is just going to be too much. It's already had the impact with no more FCS going forward. This is the next step. Local appeasement be damned. Iowa has loftier aspirations. Having a one sided super bowl every year sure as heck isn't one of em and shouldn't be.

My point was that a school who is not even in the division got votes in the division. I wonder if the same writers who voted for NDSU would also vote for Mt. Union.

You're probably right about Iowa State, though I don't mind placating the locals on that issue. The bottom line for you and I and a growing number of us . . . if Iowa State is the ONLY P5 game in the non-con, we've got a problem. I'm all for upgrading the OOC. Pretty obvious since I suffer from OCD on that subject.:D;):):(:D
LOL.

One thing is for certain our non-con was 3 land mines in a row. Lose to any of them and we look like chumps. NDSU had nothing to lose by playing their betters. That's a mindset Barta/Ferentz could benefit from.

Yea his shtick is really getting old. In his opinion our not very good players are solid and not to blame, but our best players like Jewell and CJ are largely at fault. He doesn't believe the things he's saying he just says them to get people worked up. Pay him no mind.

And here I just thought Icky was Bower's dad.

He's one week away from writing a book about how much better Maybin is than King.

In this game? yes! But it's not that I think Bower is a better LB than Jewell. Read my thread about what they 'did' to Jewell in this game. I get really tired of people making Bower the scapegoat. O-line? I've said it twice already and I'll say it again.... 5 cannot block 7, and 6 cannot block 8!!! What don't people get??? And I agree, we got outcoached, and as much as I defend the staff, you know that's hard for me to say.....

OK, I lied. But you make it too 'tempting'!!! You really are the 'least' knowledgeable fan I've ever encountered, and the way you 'jump' to conclusions and 'extremes' in what I say, is second to none!!! You should get some kind of award, but you probably wouldn't like the 'name' of it....But, it doesn't matter, as long as you get to give your brilliant 'opinions', life is good, right??? I don't think I've ever encountered anyone who has no sense of 'shame' or 'embarrassment'.... Like I keep saying, you truly are a 'special' person............

Well another great day as at church but at work today. This time it was a co-worker who was a Ohio State fan. All he could do was shake his head as he walked up to me. He tried to make it better by reminding me that their program has won five championships in their league. **** that!!!!!
I knew that word would be blotted out so I just did it myself.

*I know our defense got bulldozed on the last two possession by North Dakota but do I need to remind you that they only gave up nine points the whole game?

Pizz poor defensive schemes the last two drives for sure. They are KNOWN as a power running team. Did Phil not get the memo? Stacking the box is the only way to go. This is elementary defense. No lets just play our standard defense of rushing four guys.

*The offensive play calling was even worse on OUR last two possessions. This loss falls more on the offensive and defensive coordinators the last two possessions that anyone else.

* Lol, I kept yelling at the TV to stack the box, but that damn Phil wouldn't listen.

*It is kind of funny I guess that KF let the time run out so that they didn't kick the field goal from extra point range. Even he knew they were toast.

And here I just thought Icky was Bower's dad.
No, I'm giving you a TRUE analysis of what's going on. If you don't understand it, I can't help that, but you'd hear the same thing in the film room after the game..........I'm glad you 'think' CJ and Jewell NEVER make mistakes, but I'm even more happy that the 'coaches' don't think like you, or they/we would never get any better. They never screw up or have bad games, you just blame it on the O-line and Bower, LOL..That's EXACTLY what is going on in 'film', lol....
