I've tried to come up with some ways of trying to see the cup half full here. For one the west is not lost. And this may be the kick in the rear the coaches need not just the players for going forward. The coaches should have an easy time motivating the team to play this week. I'm glad it's on the road and they can focus on the game. They'll have a rough week around town as it is so playing on the road should help.
Going forward Iowa really really needs to shake up their scheduling. It just has to be done. Schwartzs article really pointed that out. Playing cupcakes does nothing. I hate being lumped in with the Baylors of the world and having the lame lazy media be right about Iowa's perception. I think KF got such a bad taste in his mouth from playing out west and losing in non con years ago has just skewed his thinking. But football was different then. The goals have changed. Now there's a division to win still yes but also the playoffs. I think getting to the playoffs should be Iowa's #1 goal. That starts with scheduling. This type of schedule gives Iowa no margin for error on getting in it. (Hell last year there was talk of leaving Iowa out if they were undefeated) I'd almost rather lose a game like that against an AZ, AZ ST, or a legit Cali school then a MAC school, ISU let alone FCS. Now it's not like those are the only options either playing Pitt like we did was good now find a new partner or two like that again. Now I'm a pretty big fan of college football and I take nothing away from NDSU. I've watched UNI and them play quite a bit and have always respected them. NDSU the last few years could be defeating a whole lot of D1 teams. However here is where the 'but' comes in for me. It's irrelevant that NDSU is as good as they are. Only because of who they are. The powers that be will not look at that loss as even remotely being a good one. So much like the same argument with playing a MAC or ISU what is the benefit of playing them? If you don't beat them convincingly and get out of it without many injuries you lose. I wonder if the media will ask and press KF on this topic going forward and see if 'New Kirk' may continue to evolve one can only hope....
As far as how the game went I thought there were two main plays and one possession that got to me. The first being very early in the game where CJ over threw Kittle. If he hits him he'd have been around mid field or further. Instead Iowa punts. The second was Daniels long run on first play of 3rd q. What a BS holding call that was. Instead of 1st and goal Iowa punts. The next was the last possession Iowa had. So our 4 min offense is basically lineup in power I everyone on the LOS with no threat of a pass and run it twice when all game long Iowa had no success in doing that and then throw on 3rd down with next to no chance of converting... It just screamed not only old KF but just bad strategy. Iowa does realize you can lineup in other formations and still run the ball right? You don't have to 100% tip your hand pre snap even if you are going to run it. At least if you have 3 WRs spread out you make them take a man or two out of the box...
So anyway there's my Monday morning rant hope we can get our O lineman back to full strength and start being the bullies again.

I actually feel worse now than I did right after the game.....

After going back and looking at the replay, several things stood out to me that don't bode well:

1. Cole Croston and Boone Myers looked to have regressed from last year in terms of pass blocking. Now, that might have something to do with crappy line calls being called by LeGrand. But there was one pass play where it looked like NDSU fooled those two so much on the left side that neither literally blocked anyone and CJ got smashed.

2. Wadley looks to be hurt worse than was led on. AIRBHG strikes again?

3. There's a reason Bo Bower shouldn't be on the field. In 2014, we got jet-sweeped to death by teams realizing how bad of a run stopper he is. So now our answer is to put him on the weak side and, lo and behold, the majority of rushing plays by NDSU were to where? Yep, the weakside. And who got consistently blocked out of the play? Yep, you guessed it.

4. CJ looks like a shell of his former self from the waist down. He can't scramble, which takes away a big part of his game of throwing on the run or tucking and running.

5. It's now apparent after 3 games why Brandon Snyder was a walkon and not a scholarship player.

I agree with the scheduling, but truthfully the only problem I have with scheduling the Bison is them being an FCS program. In all honesty I'd rather play a program of their talent level as opposed to Miami or ISU as dictated by the score. The problem is that despite their success, and the fact they may legitimately be a better opponent than those being scheduled by most teams in OOC play, they are still viewed as a FCS opponent. You don't win 5 straight championships at any level without skill. No excuse for Iowa's performance on Saturday, but its unfortunate that a great FCS opponent is viewed as an inferior FCS program that humiliated Iowa.

Yeah I can't say I feel any better really either...
The offense looked terrible. I can sorta see the D getting beat up as much as they were on the field. Iowa was just so sloppy on O. Be it blocking and overall executing. CJ played poorly for him and he won't like watching the tape either. He's got to improve his pocket awareness and throwing the ball away. He's taking shots he doesn't have to it's as simple as that.

No doubt about it. I spoke with with some of their fans and also know MN fans. Up there they all know who's better. It'd be interesting to see the Bison play a D1 schedule and see how they'd do. MN would trade rosters with them in a heart beat.

The first opportunity to upgrade schedule will be 2019, which interestingly is exactly the same as 2016 except all the home games are away games and vice versa.

Miami of Ohio, RUT, PSU, Minnesota, Pur, ILL at home
@ISU, @Mich @Wisconsin @NW, @Neb

One game still needs to be filled in 2019, which would have gone to an FCS team, but Iowa will play it's last FCS team for a long time, when it plays UNI in 2018.

So it would be cool to schedule a Mizzou or Arkansas or Texas Tech, which I believe Iowa could get a home-away series with in 2019-2012, but odds are they will probably just schedule NIU-Dekalb again, maybe in Soldier field again.

The part that sucks is that we generally complain about a cupcake schedule yet bring in an FCS team that is anything but cupcakes and then downplay how good they truly were because they're an FCS program. It's unfortunate more big name programs won't play them, because I'd love to see them against other power conference opponents. As I've stated in other posts, you don't win 5 straight championships at any level without skill, coaching, talent.

And all this talk about the sky is falling can also be relative. How do FSU fans feel today? Oklahoma? ND? There’s some schools that had some big time expectations and there’s no playoffs in their futures. (Well FSU seems like a long shot now anyway) And honestly that’s all that’s off the table for Iowa in that the other lofty goals are still out there to be had. Now is Iowa good enough is up in the air. But at least some of our goals are still out there to be had. (I have to keep the cup half full card going or I’ll crumble)

I agree with all the points above, especially Brandon Snyder, he got burned several times and looked lost.

Part of this is on CJ's "clock", part of this is they typical regression of senior QB's under Ferentz - shackled and tentative. Stanzi was the same way. Sure, he looked statistically better, but I don't think it's a shocking coincidence that it translated into fewer W's.

If derKirkFer can stop projecting his own flacidness onto his playmakers and OC and let the horses run like their built / wired to do, Iowa continues the 2009, ERRRRRRRRR the 2015 magic.

I dunno about you but I don't think we've seen the last of Stanley this year... And I don't mean garbage time. It's not just the amount of shots he takes but some of them have just been nasty. I admire his toughness but to stare down the gun barrel and subject yourself to that when it's not in yours or the teams best interest isn't just not smart it's stupid. That said I'm not sure how coachable of a thing that is. That's a pretty reactionary deal and each play is it's own play. I'd think by 3 games into your SR year you are who you are along those lines but maybe not...

#41 doesn't belong on the field. I know he's a great kid and works hard (which I appreciate and respect), but I have a hard time believing we don't have another LB that is more of a play maker. We were "warned" a couple of weeks ago with the "B B is Iowa football" piece.

The conspiracy theorist (or rather familiarity with KFz) in me says the Kirk is sending some kind of message about his football culture...and like a few other examples we've seen, doing it as the expense of the team.

There is no "new" Kirk, folks. Saturday was the clearest example of original Kirk you could offer.
