After 4 games, who has surprised you?

I don't think Prater is playing that well right now either, he had had a couple of big time mental lapses, would be looked over if he was younger, but being an All BIG CB, a bit mind boggling. Maybe it's from breaking in a couple new safeties, IDK?

I didn't think he had a good game against Pitt. I was there and he got beat bad a couple times. He's a fighter though, he'll come back strong.

Although I had heard plenty of positive things about Kirksey ... I gotta say that Kirksey has been a bit of a positive there.

Also, as for Nielsen, I don't think that folks are accounting for the fact that his ankle had been iffy a few weeks ago. Of course, if you are going to pick on him, I was a bit disappointed with his tackling against ULM.

As for an overall bit of disappointment ....

- kick coverage prior to the 4th quarter versus Pitt ... pretty bad and definitely disappointing

- overall poor tackling by the D ... bad tackling has really undermined some real positives by the D

No love for Guthrie? Punters are people too.

Yes they are EddyP. I was walking behind this Guthrie fellow after the game ...and from my position I could tell he's....well he's tall and has long legs and nice looking. He also did a a double head turn when he passed my daughter who was farther along and waiting for me on the side walk and I was all like "hey did you see that? He was checking you out. That's the kicker you know, get up there...say hi or something...." and she was like all " Jeebus mom" He was with his mom and dad and sister/girlfriend or something.....guess that was intimidating.

you should start your own "punter love" thread, bud

But...he's a really, really tall punter, Vin. Until this past week, Guthrie may have been most surprising, or a close second to Bernstine. That said, he only averaged 48 yards per punt during this latest game.

Am disappointed with our TE position, up to this point. Believe Derby got the start ahead of Herman against ULM, and CJF hasn't lived up to the fans expectations...hey numbnuts, ya, you #86...a little effort on the blocky thingy, and you may get more playing time. Derby is playing with an attitude, yet he is the least talented of the TE's in the depth chart. That's not a slam against Zach, he's the latest in a long line of walk-ons, that worked his a$$ off and being rewarded for it.

In terms of disappointment, I'd have to agree with the comments about poor tackling. The poor tackling isn't a fluke. It's pretty consistent.

Prater has made a lot of mistakes, but he'll get it figured out.

WTF Freak? Guthrie is a FB player, even if he's a punter. All he wants, is to score with your little girl.

Just a father of young daughters, pointing this out. This kind of thing isn't going to be easy for me.:(

Jeebus Drake! I've been married for 26 years....but was young once! I know what guys want...same thing mr freak wants....soon... so this will be my last post tonight!:D

I'm trying to get her out of my house and interested in someone other than the person she hangs with now. Preferably would like to find her a Hawkeye fan. :)

Pleasant:
KMM
Bernstine (looks an awful lot like Sanders out there)
Derby (starting to remind me a little of Brandon Myers, my favorite TE of the KF era)
Kirksey
Guthrie
Vandy (only somewhat of a surprise, though)

Unpleasant:
Poor tackling
Prater (He's gotten caught peeking into the backfield several times now. Needs to break that habit, and soon.)
TE's not named Derby.
Coker (this is a mild disappointment that's fading after coming to life this week)

Pleasant (in particular order)
Kirksey - so far I think the most consistent defender, and very, very underrated. Also seems to be around the ball a ton and uses his athleticism very well
Bernstine - what a difference maker! I think this defense needs him more than anyone else. He sets the tempo and forces the action. And he's a great story after the injuries.
Miller - seemingly getting better daily. Last week I pegged him for the Greenwood trajectory, w/ remarkably the same tendencies as Greenwood. After yesterday I'd put him on a higher path.
KMM - had a couple drops Sat., but overall he's been fantastic and dynamite in the slot.
Davis / McNutt - I thought they'd be good, but they've generally been great. A drop here and there, but overall when the ball is in the air, it's theirs, and they don't hesitate to go get it where ever it is, not to mention after the catch they fight for every inch they can.
Bullock / Canzeri - I didn't think these 2 would see the field this season, but both could / will be a great complement to Coker and bring a change of pace, which seemed necessary for a few carries against Pitt and Sat. to get something even more positive from the running game.

Unpleasant
TE's - just aren't playing to the standard we're used to. Missed blocks, false starts and drops aren't qualities we're used to in IA TE's. Maybe we've been spoiled or have too high expectations, but these 3 can, should, and hopefully will play better.
DL - seemingly getting better the last couple weeks, but more consistency and consistent production would be great.
Coker - also seemingly much, much better the last couple wks, in particular Sat. I'm not sure where the Sat. Coker was the first 3 wks, but it was good to see him again.
Nielsen - he was great against TN Tech, hurt the next 2 wks, and was just underwhelming Sat. He's too good a player to blatantly miss easy tackles and not play better, which I don't question he will.
OL - they haven't been bad by any stretch of the imagination, but not quite as dominant as I'd hoped / expected. I think they're like the others in my "unpleasant" list in that I think they're turning a corner and starting to put things together. There's too much talent in this group not to be more dominant, and I think the additions of Scherff and hopefully Nolan Mac could make these guys road graders, in particular Scherff. What a specimen that kid is!
