Adam Gettis NFL Combine

Anybody else surprised he was invited to the combine? A good player, but just a one year starter and not very big. Happy for the guy and would love to see an NFL career, but surprised by this. What am I missing?

I'm not surprised. he played at Iowa, and he was really good last year. I think he was the second best OL last year. he was very consistent.

Over the course of his career, I think he started nearly two seasons. Last year he did a great job playing through the whistle. I'm guessing a lot of combine invites are determined by coach's recommendation, and Kirk probably said something good about Gettis.

Not surprising, Gettis is an offensive lineman from Iowa. Regardless of what the fan base thinks, Ferentz is very well respected in NFL circles. Gettis is probably more NFL ready than most of the lineman that will attend the combine, especially lineman that played in a spread offense.

The Packers found this out on the last two years with Newhouse & Sherrod. Both of them may have better measurables than Bulaga, but both of them are projects because they played in a spread offense. In contrast, Bulaga came to camp NFL ready.

Gettis has the technique & fundamentals to play in the NFL. Does he have the physical ability? Probably not.

I think if Vandervelde can get drafted last year, there is no reason that Gettis isn't a borderline draftee/free agent.

Gettis had a good year, but not sure it was great. In any event, he is not a huge guy and don't you really have to be over 300 lbs in the NFL, with the exception of centers? Certainly hope he kills it at the combine.

As for Binns, love the guy. Excellent senior year. But, again, he doesn't seem to be nearly as big as he would need to be in the NFL. In person he barely looks 6ft.

IMO there is enough respect around the NFL for Ferentz that if you start at Iowa on the offensive line then you are automatically going to get a look.

Gettis is a better athlete than anyone in this thread is giving him credit for. He had injury problems and will get a high draft grade possibly 4-6 round.

I think he's plenty athletic, just wasn't aware that he has NFL size. Obviously if he is invited to the combine, he is in the range though.

This seems to be true. The assumption is that at the very least the guy is going to have solid technique.

Iowa generally has allot more talent on offense than results on the field would indicate.

Although I believe this is a side swipe its true nonetheless....Iowa is quite an anomaly I'm a believer in this staff and program yet they have been lacking something. And I don't believe its as easy as scheme or play calling. This team oozes talent and I honestly think Binns will test off the charts and get drafted as a result of his Pro days....

The point being, somewhere along the line we lost that Iowa swagger and desire. Its hard to re-find and yet in most cases we are about 5 to 10 plays a game from winning fairly handily and you can see it on the field. More often than not they are in position and just don't make the play...

We miss more tackles than we used too. We commit boneheaded penalties, we play good convergae son pecial teams and then suddenly they are starting at the 45, etc, etc, etc....Its much more ethereal than anyone realizes.

Agreed. Plus, I think Gettis can put a few more pounds on his frame. Why not invite him to get a good look 1st hand, especially when he was nearly a 2-year starter Iowa, who is known for putting many O-linemen in the NFL. And it really helps when KF was your head coach, of course.

That answer is simple - it is Kirk Ferentz. If he wants you to go to the combine, you go to the combine. It does not matter who you are. If you do what you are suppose to @Iowa, you will get a chance in the NFL. PERIOD. Even if you are not that deserving... If you do NOT do what you are suppose to (e.g. Binns, DJK), you will have to get in thru extremely hard work, 2nd chance luck & determination. Or you get really lucky and are very good (e.g. Ballard).

Ferentz gets a lot of players into the NFL who may not have had that chance if they were on most any other team. He is that respected.

What exactly did Binns not supposedly do?

Binns will get a look even though he isn't going to the combine. Brandon Myers was drafted without a combine invite. Also theboat won this thread with his Vandervelde comparison. Gettis will fit as a depth pick late for a zone blocking team.
