Adam Gettis NFL Combine

Although I believe this is a side swipe its true nonetheless....Iowa is quite an anomaly I'm a believer in this staff and program yet they have been lacking something. And I don't believe its as easy as scheme or play calling. This team oozes talent and I honestly think Binns will test off the charts and get drafted as a result of his Pro days....

The point being, somewhere along the line we lost that Iowa swagger and desire. Its hard to re-find and yet in most cases we are about 5 to 10 plays a game from winning fairly handily and you can see it on the field. More often than not they are in position and just don't make the play...

We miss more tackles than we used too. We commit boneheaded penalties, we play good convergae son pecial teams and then suddenly they are starting at the 45, etc, etc, etc....Its much more ethereal than anyone realizes.

Its the truth. You can't average top 5 in players drafted for like 3 or 4 straight years and then look at the records and come up with any other conclusion.

People like to use the "we are just Iowa" excuse but in reality, at least the last 4 years, it couldn't be further from the truth. Those teams have been loaded.

For what ever reason Iowa consistently plays flat and down to poor competition. This year we even came out flat in what should have been big games like Nebraska and OU. At least previously it was only against bad teams.

With the exception of Greene & a few others, Iowa just hasn't had great players at the offensive skill positions. The Hawks are very well represented in the NFL with the exception of skilled offensive players.

That's usually something that happens when things start going a little stale, which is why I'm hopeful that we do in fact bring in Tom Moore to be the OC. There's a balance between stability and new blood, and Iowa needs to find it.

Are you kidding me? Iowa has had a fantastic set of receivers and tight ends over this time period, a QB who was drafted, Greene and Coker and after this year 7 or 8 offensive lineman who will have been drafted.

And still the offense can't put up decent numbers.

Now its ok to not take chances when you had a dominant D like in 08 and 09 I get that, but you simply cannot continue that take no chances strategy when your d is below average.

gettis getting an invite doesnt surprise me. binns not getting an invite doesnt surprise me. they are very similar players on opposite sides of the ball with 1 major difference that i think cost binns and helped gettis this yr.

1) both were pretty much 2-2+ yr starters: binns because daniels emergence and gettis because of injury.

2) both are a little undersized by nfl standards: but not so much by what iowa usually puts out.

3) both were overshadowed by nfl elite type talent: bulaga & reiff vs ballard & clayborn

4) both make few mistakes but arent the most impressive player on the field: binns is one of the best contain des i have seen but that isnt flashy, gettis rarely got beat but he also doesnt show the mean streak of james ferentz or the dominance of reiff or bulaga.

5) the difference: binns had some up and down moments this year where he didnt hurt us but it didnt seem like he elevated his play when needed like when daniels was hurt and our other des did nothing. gettis seemed to always make the block to the point that because he was a good reach block in the zone we ran away from him because the other guards couldnt pull it off.

binns will impress (much like tarp did - cant remember if he went to combine) at the iowa pro day. he is much better than most fans realize along with gettis. if gettis gets help being from iowa and on the ol then binns gets help being from iowa and being on the dl, but he just didnt step his game up as consistently as gettis did. i actually think both could get drafted. but both could go undrafted too. i see them bothat 6 round to undrafted. but trust they are both good enough to get to a camp.

Anybody else surprised he was invited to the combine? A good player, but just a one year starter and not very big. Happy for the guy and would love to see an NFL career, but surprised by this. What am I missing?
That answer is simple - it is Kirk Ferentz. If he wants you to go to the combine, you go to the combine. It does not matter who you are. If you do what you are suppose to @Iowa, you will get a chance in the NFL. PERIOD. Even if you are not that deserving... If you do NOT do what you are suppose to (e.g. Binns, DJK), you will have to get in thru extremely hard work, 2nd chance luck &determination. Or you get really lucky and are very good (e.g. Ballard). Ferentz gets a lot of players into the NFL who may not have had that chance if they were on most any other team. He is that respected.

what did binns do? his brother walked on so i figure he respects kf a lot. and i have never heard of him being in the doghouse. the only problem was daniels passed him up and deserved a starting spot so they moved ballard (a better player & had moved to dt because of binns) back to de. yet binns was still in the rotation and still played a lot.

what did ballard do? i know he tested positive for weed but that was at the combine not while he was playing at iowa. i dont remember him ever being in kf doghouse. in fact he was a 1st or 2nd rounder until he tested positive. he cost himself millions possibly. but i believe kf always spoke very highly of ballard (a position switch alum to show iowa's great ability at identifying talent at different spots).

At 265 lbs. Binns is a tweener. He can earn a roster spot as a back up, spot duty guy in a 3-4, zone blitz scheme. He is not nearly as powerful or athletic as guys like Lamar Woodley or Shaun Philips, but he could play a similar role. Those long arms and his football IQ he could be decent in pass coverage in a zone blitz scheme.

He will never be Clay Matthews as a edge rusher, but if he is drafted and/or FA with the right team I would say he would have at least a 50/50 chance of making a roster.
