Aaron White's Size

Some people seem to think "once he fills out his frame" he will be a force for years to come. I am thinking the opposite. I would rather see him increase his speed and agility. With Woodbury and Meyer coming in, i don't think we need more size. I am worried more weight will translate into a slower White. White was listed at 6'8" 200-210 when he signed. Meyer is listed at 6'9" 210lbs. Woodbury 7'1" 230.

What are your thoughts? Pack on the pounds or focus on speed and agility?

I'd guess he's probably an XL Tall. He's super long but he doesn't look like he's got the frame to go 2XL Tall. JC Penny has a nice section of big and tall as does Eddie Bauer's web site, though I don't think you'd be able to get anything shipped in time for Xmas at this short notice.

Watching him play I don't think he will ever be fast enough to cover a true wing. However, if he continues to work on agility and also builds strength, he might be able to develop the ability to set a base with his length so that quicker forwards won't be able to beat him off the dribble and also be able to flash out at shooters and alter their shots.

White is going to be a Ryan Bowen type player, not a Jess Settles banger. He will certainly add some weight and fill out with maturity and work in the weight room, but we saw what happened to Basabe after packing lbs on, so I doubt that exercise will be repeated.

McCaffrey knows what White needs and it is conditioning. The last couple games seem to indicate his conditioning is improving, as he is more active on both ends for sustained periods of time and his jumpers are starting to fall vs. front rim.

Aaron can/will get much stronger without adding much actual bulk. If he gets bigger, so be it, but the primary goal should be strength, not size.

If you think Basabe's slump was caused by extra weight I've got a bridge to sell you.

Muscle weight and speed are not necessarily tradeoffs. Aaron could probably increase his speed with some more leg muscle.

Dolphin stated on radio last night a couple times he is 6'10. Then he threw in a 6'9 once I think. What is his actual height I'm so confused?

He & Marble are going to be a tough guard together when in the game together slashing & cutting on offense. Iowa really needed a player with a great outside & inside game that can drive when needed.

To bad Gatens doesn't drive & slash more than he does. He seems to get blocked on occasion down there. But, the only reason I state this is it would be nice if he could get fouled more to take advantage of his great free-throw %. It would be nice to get him to the line a lot more to pick up a cheap 10-15 extra points a game. He's got the 2nd best overall free throw% only behind Stevey boy. Iowa should try to take advantage of that luxury.

Matt Gatens will never ever be a drive to the bucket and finish at the rim player. However he is showing a very competent mid range game off the bounce this year. Two dribbles and a pull up off glass from 8-10 is a very good look for Matt and is helping him get a few more open looks from behind the arch as players can't just fly at him anymore.

Yea. I agree. That's not in his comfort level. I was just stating it would be nice if they could figure out a way to get him fouled more than he does. But, you don't want to mess with the flow of your team deviating from a game plan.

You people need to get over the Basabe got too heavy scam. It was a cover story by Fran to explain away the slow start to Basabe this season. White can certainly use a few more pounds of muscle, and it will do nothing but improve his game.

Melsahn mentioned in the postgame interview that he is down to 223 lbs.
I believe Fran said he was at 234 to start the season, with his body fat down.

He is clearly playing better. So, either they are all lying about his weight or the fact that he is down 11 lbs might be a contributing factor to his improved play.
What else would it be?

The weight was almost certainly at least part of the problem. He also didn't seem to have his head in game. Perhaps the weight gain also weighed on him mentally, I don't know. But the weight+his almost total disinterest at the start of the year made for a pretty deadly combo for his game.

But, he is clearly playing better now that the weight is gone.

These last couple of games he looks a lot better. He sort of floated through those middle games of the non-conference schedule. He'll be a (the?) key to a respectable Big Ten season.

Which one first?

White is a small forward. He needs agility. Think Les Jepsen.

Basabe is being forced into the post position even though he's not a natural post player.
(Remember, Iowa hasn't gotten to their B1G schedule yet and bigger players are being recruited).

So Basabe and some of you agree he plays better with less weight.
At which position is Basabe a natural?

Will he play himself out of the starting post role?
