Aaron White to enroll in June

From the article: "This was the fifth consecutive year the Hawkeyes missed the NCAA tournament. Prior to that, though, they were a staple, making the field 24 times between 1979 and 2006, including the last six years of that stretch."

That math is way off. Prior to Alford getting hired in 1999, Iowa had made the tourney 16 of 21 years...then three appearances by Alford, missing it in Alford's final year, but making it two of the last three.

BUT...its good that White will be enrolling

"If White has one drawback, it's his physical size. He's paper-thin, but well aware of it. That's why he will leave Strongsville, where he has spent his entire life, immediately after graduation. He'll start summer classes at Iowa in June and begin training in the Hawkeyes' weight room immediately."

Thats good.

I've seen pictures and I would not say he is too thin to play in the big 10. Getting to IC early will most definitely help get him accustomed to the game early and allow him to play in the PTL!

I wonder what his current weight is? If he's a legit 6'8" then he has a frame that should handle 230lbs of muscle.

What I do love about the picture in this article is how confidently Aaron is driving to his left, handling with his left hand..from the clips I have viewed he handles very well with either hand, something that some of our players still do not do well...in fact, I would say that Marble might actually be the best at it...but Cully,Matt,Eric, and even Bryce do not handle that well with their off hands...last guy that really could was Jake Kelly.
As the author indicates,Aaron has a very nice skill-set for a 6'8'' player...handle,drive and shoot well with either hand, and a good shooter from the arc....that is the basic stuff you need to succeed at the high division 1 level. Now, quickness and strength are the other elements...strength takes time and work, but can be achieved...quicks are tougher. If he puts all this together,we got us a player!

In some pics he looks thick enough, but I always keep in mind that he is pictured with other high school kids who might be even more paper thin.
If the local hometown columnist calls him paper thin...I think we have to assume that he needs to bulk up to really hold his own in the Big Ten.
It is pretty rare for a frosh to come in like Melsahn,Eric,Matt,Jarryd and Tyler Smith and be strong enough to deal with this physical league. Ok, I guess not so rare when Iowa has had a guy in each of their last 5 classes be strong enough...but Aaron is not at any of these guys level as far as physique, it appears....but maybe he is stringy strong...:)

Both Gatens and Basabe weren't overly strong their freshman years either. If he sticks to putting in the work he can be a good player.

Again if 6'8" and 215 is accurate that is not paper thin. I cold see him at 220-225 by the start of the season and that would be just fine for a freshman. Besides, if he can get to the rim and is a more mobile player, you want to be careful with how much weight you put on him anyway. As we all saw when Fran took over, he preferred the lighter more athletic player, that is why they all were asked to lose weight! I am not too concerned with White at this point. Oglesby looks to be more thin than White???

Just my opinon, but I thought that Matt was one of the physically more mature players Iowa has had as a frosh. I still remember him battling senior strongman Wisky power forward Krabbenhoft in that game in Carver in Gatens frosh year. He guarded him the whole game...as a frosh, and held his own. That is strength.
Melsahn was certainly not weak this year as a frosh...he rebounded very well in traffic, and held his own guarding Sullinger in the post...blocked a bunch of his shots,in fact.

As far as comparing Olgesby to White...yes,I hope White is stronger as he is going to play near the basket a lot more than perimeter shooter Oglesby. No doubt, they both need to gain strength...maybe not bulk, but wiry strength.

Yeah, Gatens is right up there with Settles and Kingsberry in terms of physical maturity as a true frosh.

Give the kid 5 months in the weight room with the right strenghth coaches and he very easily could pack on 10-15 pounds. Can't wait to see the kid on the floor.

We have several guys that need to work on going to their non-dominate side. Especially Eric May.
If that guy can develop a strong left handed move, and get his outside shot back, then look out! He has the skill set to be an incredible player.
Can he develop the left??? Let's put his right arm in a sling for 30 minutes a day. That'll learn him. ;)

Aaron White, Roy Marble and Darius Stokes should room together from June to September. Give these guys two-a-days in Doyle's Dungeon and they will have the chance for some important playing time come November. Believe it.

Good read. I love the passion Aaron has and it sounds like he's got a great work ethic. Can't wait to see him in action.

I agree he was built well but he wasnt overly strong with the ball. He didn't really slash the lane and dominate players with his size.

Gordon Hayward is listed at 6'8" 207 lbs on ESPN (that's current, not necessarily his playing weight at Butler). If White got up to 220 and kept his athleticism, he could be a scary good player in the Big Ten.

Just read the article. It sounds like Mr. White will be able to contribute immediately. He doesn't look paper-thin either. Could he gain weight? Of course, but he isn't paper thin. This young fella sounds motivated, determined to succeed.
If May, McCabe, Marble, etc do not work on their game, in a serious manner, White will be stealing their minutes. Not a bad problem to have...

We already have "white magic" coaching the team now it sure wouldn't hurt to have one on the court playing. I can see the signs now...."White Magic 2".
