ABC will feature the corn harvest in this Saturday nights broadcast....I can hardly wait.......hopefully the BIB entrance won't be bumped for this stereotype.

What would you like to show the great skyline it ok to show corn that is what Iowa is know for outside of the state of Iowa.

As a farmboy now in the city, I like seeing the combines at work. Harvest time is special to me. Could not care less how it is percieved.

actually it's a 112% chance they will show corn/harvest shot...... I get what the author is saying though----

Let's not be overly sensitive about the corn thing--- there is certainly more to this great state than just corn, and it does get old. while farm land accounts for a vast majority of our land use, less than 6% of iowa's work force are farmers, i'd hardly say that Iowans are farmers, I love me my farmers and am very grateful for all they do(my belly would echo those sentiments) and would be the first to raise my hand and say that i'd make it about 5 minutes in a rural/farm setting.... but it's annoying and old when it's the only thing shown.... it only reinforces dated stereotypes.

Iowa city is a beautiful town and there are plenty of good cut away shots or fad in shots they could show, ala the old capital(that's a good classic shot) or downtown.... etc. they do this for every other game--- you don't see a bunch of dairy cow farm shots when the game is played in madison--

Stereotype?? Have you driven around the state lately?

I drove from WDM to Pocahontas yesterday, and I thought the fields and the harvest were beauty to my eyes. I've never been associated with a farm at any part of my life, other than living in Iowa.

Man i don't get why this still such a major rift in this state--- 33 yrs, i've lived here all my life and yet been lucky to travel extensivley in all lower 48 states---Rural Vs Urban, it's dumb, Iowa is a very lucky state to have in many ways the best of both worlds (minus the land lock variable--no not counting our border rivers) --- i live in Des Moines and get to enjoy a great city life, i can catch an awesome concert on about any night, sip on a martini in a hip place or go to Wong's pizza downtown on 4th and hang out in a place that is as shieck(sp?) as any place you'll find in any major city-- and yet, i can wake up on saturday, go downtown des moines to the country's best farmer's market and then take the little man out to a great vineyard in winterset or go to a great pumpkin farm and spend a day out in the country basking in the country air--- this country folks vs city slickers argument is old and tired--- Iowa is a beautiful state that IMO incorporates the best of country and city..... Just selling the country part our state is cutting the state short of what it is, and just selling the state as an urban mecca is naive..... anyone thought of selling it as a combo package? just saying....

agreed...but...

it is all about perspective, i suppose.

someone coming from Manning would look at the DM area as an 'urban mecca'....but not many other people would, from a national perspective.

we shouldn't be ashamed of what we are. as denny green would say - they are what we thought they were......or something like that. we are in large part a rural state, with a few pinpoints of urban/suburban.

I live in the heart of Des Moines, but my backyard is a forest. A veritable wildlife preserve.

I grew up surrounded by corn though.

I was in NYC several years ago. Couldn't wait to get back to open country. There's something to be said for quiet nature.

there will be corn, and I love it

ANF is on the helmet for a reason ... and you can't blame ABC/ESPN for showing corn when ANF is on the helmet

"I live in the heart of Des Moines, but my backyard is a forest. A veritable wildlife preserve."

sounds like you live in the south of grand area--- that is such an AMAZING neighborhood!!

i agree about the ANF logo on the helmets and i'm actually glad that ferentz carried that on---- i don't think most people are upset that a corn shot get's shown....i think people (i at least anyways) get annoyed when every shot is shown..... people talk about national perception, well, when that is the only thing shown it just exasperates the notion---- It comes down to over kill people..... it does get old.

Look at it from a marketing standpoint--- We all want great future recruits and students to come live, play and learn at the University right? They say perception is reality--- well--we have to change that perception---

I'm not really sure why anyone would be bothered that they show corn gettin harvested. I think having our state play a major role in feeding the world is something for Iowans to be proud of.

Oh yea. You'll see the big freaking green combine coming at the ground camera with corn dust & dirt flying up. It's a given! The farmer they pick should paint that combine black to match the theme for the evening.

Maybe we should be glad they'll show a corn harvest rather than certain egg producing facilities in North Central Iowa.
