A quick realization RE: Stanzi

Like all fans, I found myself having a shorter memory than perhaps I should have. We fans traditionally very much have a "what have you done for me today" sort of attitude.

Thus, coming off of a somewhat disappointing 2010 season ... with the pick against Northwestern being particularly vivid in my memory ... I found myself not being on the Stanzi-wagon as much as I've been in the past.

I know that I was being short-sighted and dumb ... but WOW ... it's pretty striking how impressive Stanzi's career was at Iowa through its entire duration.

How many Iowa QBs can tout BCS-bowl quality victories? How many Iowa QBs WON 3-straight bowl games for us ... and against quality foes, no less! [Thanks to Stormin' for pointing out my brain-fart]

The benefit of hindsight really SHOULD place Ricky REALLY high in Hawk lore.

And, what's particularly great about Ricky was that he really was just as impressive off the field as he was on the field. He did a lot to help folks out who were facing tough stretches in their lives.

Kudos to Stanzi for being a TRULY great Hawk!

I still stand by what I said last fall; I think Stanzi is a Top Three Iowa QB in my lifetime with Chuck and Chuck being 1-2.

Amen. Ricky was a botched Lester Erb fake punt call and a few defensive stands (one of which would have been a lot easier if we weren't dealing with ineligible players) away from taking Iowa to the Rose Bowl for the first time in a long time. Ferentz and O'Keefe would have crushed TCU and not made the mistake Bielema made with respect to horrible offensive playcalling. Ricky is a Hawkeye legend and I hope the fanbase doesn't hold a tarnished opinion of him because of the defensive collapses and special team meltdowns that made 2010 a season that failed to live up to expectations.

I went to the 2009 MSU game and that last play O'Keefe drew up that Ricky and Marvin executed to perfection was one for the ages. I hit my first game at the Big House in 2010 and watching Ricky shred Michigan's defense in the Big House was also a great experience. Andt he 2008 drive against Penn State that changed the trajectory of the program won't be forgotten any time soon. Only knock is he never beat Northwestern, but neither did Drew Tate and Tate's still a legend.

I would say stanzi was more of a lucky QB to have the defense around him and other good players to help him look better...

I'd say your wrong, but an opinion is an opinion and I respect yours, but definitely disagree.

Most QBs who've enjoyed a lot of winning tend to benefit from great Ds too. That was definitely the case for "the Chucks" too.

Stanzi was a gamer who exhibited great leadership. Furthermore, his work ethic is a huge reason why he continued to make such great progress through his carrer.

Undoubtedly, Stanzi SHOULD rank among the Hawk-greats.

Maybe I'm missing your point but isn't that really what makes good QB's better? You need good players around you to make you better.

I have to agree. I think that as time passes, Stanzi will be remembered as one of the better QBs to play at Iowa. It was nice seeing him walk out on the field and knowing that you would most likely have a shot to win the game.

I don't even think we need to wait for time to pass. Stanzi was a great QB and he led Iowa on a three year run that included back to back to back bowl wins (including a BCS game) and nearly got us an undefeated season and Big 10 title. There may have been other QB's that have had better seasons but for the overall body of work Stanzi should be top 3 and maybe even better.

Iowa won in-spite of Stanzi ALOT in his junior year as his decision making stunk.

I think I know more Stanzi haters than non haters, but I definetely am pro-Stanzi. If recruiting could see into the future and you recruited based on career stats I don't think there are many of us who would not take his stats as a 3 year starter.

I was a huge Drew Tate fan, and was a little upset at the grief he got towards the end, But Stanzi is way ahead of Tate on my pecking order now.

I think the real legacy that he will leave will not be known for a few years, until we see the success (and mark me down for expecting him to have alot of it) at the next level.

Ricky was a great QB for Iowa. I enjoyed watching him play. I, like others, just wish that we had a better OC / QB coach and he / we could have been great.

Stanzi was Craig Krenzel for 2 years, then Ken Dorsey for his 3rd year. A true Jekyll and Hyde...I can't put him above Tate on my all-time list.

As a Hawkeye fan, I've realized that regardless of who our QB is, we tend to downplay his ability while riding the coattails of his backup (with the obvious exception of Christianson). We constantly think that who ever the back up is will be the greatest QB in team history and so much better than whoever is currently starting. I constantly read how there is or should be a QB controversy and that the next best thing is sitting on the bench (like posters stating JVB showed more than Stanzi after 3 starts and should of replaced him at the end of last year). IMO, we've had a couple very good QB's lately, but unfortunately too many of us were busy calling for the next guys number and didn't take the time to appreciate how good of players they really were.

If we are talking if ands or buts, 2 bad calls and an illeligable player from playing in the NCG.
