A PREVIEW OF THE NEW KINNICK EXPERIENCE?

And so when Iowa took the field at Valley High Saturday with a soundtrack heavy on hip hop from this century (with some modern country mixed in, because I'm pretty sure Brandon Scherff made them) and started chucking the rock all over the field, it felt so...immediate. So fresh. So fun. It wasn't without its cringe worthy moments -- one edited version of a Jay Z/Kanye West track was almost unlistenable after the PG overdubs -- but it still felt like a significant improvement over the opening chords of "Machinehead" again. And I'm 33. I should ******* love "Machinehead."

Remember when the team started dancing on the sideline before overtime of the 2012 Michigan State game in East Lansing? It was dancing to the aforementioned Jay Z/Kanye track, played over the Spartan Stadium speakers. And it won that game. It won an overtime game against Northwestern in 2013 where it showed the same kind of emotion, so I'm not about to say it's all because of the music. But if the music helps, if it gives the team just a hint of a kick in the *** before a key play or an overtime, then shouldn't we dispense of our middle-aged sensibilities and play the damn music they want?

Yes, please.

And they have f'ed up Back in Black so bad with the timing now they should look at changing that up too.

I wouldn't be disappointed if they got rid of the stupid back and black opening with the semi driving to Iowa City and hitting the other team's helmet on the way through.

Also the panchero's burrito lift...because f*** the burrito lift

Would this be the appropriate thread for me to weigh in with some original opinions regarding (1) the band playing something other than "Hey Jude" between the 3rd & 4th Q and (2) painting the water tower?

Oh great I will have to listen to music off my phone rather than that garbage.

A little two live crew, eazy m f e, if were gonna rap it up, let's really rap it up, I mean lets do this!

What exactly is Brian Ferentz talking about when he mentioned the whole "improved stadium experience" thing?

Maybe I missed it. It was mentioned again during his press conference yesterday, but he wasn't very specific about what exactly he means. Sounds like whatever it is has become something they are trying to address. I'm interested because I finally got season tickets this year, and I'm wondering if I'll notice a difference.

I actually like the Kinnick experience. Sure the burrito lift is radonculous, and there are probably better venues, but it's the hawks and I like them. If you want to start with how it can be better, how about we start with us, the fans. Probably the most annoying part of Kinnick is every football expert I've sat by for the last ten years. The screaming idiot that thinks the players and fans can personally hear what they are saying and actually listening for coaching and playing tips. The fan that thinks every call against us is wrong. The guy setting next to me that is literally 100 pounds overweight that takes up half if my wife's seat. The guy that gets up thirteen times a game for snacks. Dude, set the f down and watch the game. Kinnick is great. The hawks are great. All the ding dongs....not so much. Want to start with improvements, like the late great pedo mr m j Jackson thrilla said, start with the man in the mirror. And get your g darn gold bricking a off my lawn.

Sorry man the couple my girlfriend and I are going with are both probably 100 lbs overweight. Fat people like football too.

Fat people can like football all day long, just don't take part of my seat when your doing it. If you can't fit in the seat, your issue, don't make it mine

If you have ever been to an away game you would understand. It's the whole package. Don't get me wrong it has improved a lot but the music that they play sometimes is comical.

Hopefully the new sound system will help this year.

True, but I've also been to some away games that seemed downright high school. I think there's a good middle ground between playing stale older tunes....and bad (C)rap

There is the overall stadium experience, which is hard to quantify sometimes. Except that when you are at other stadiums and see it done better, you know that Iowa is lacking. Everything from music selection to quality of the sound system to packing too many commercials in breaks that diffuses fan excitement. No one is saying Iowa should go all Ames and celebrate every first down, but things can be done to engage the crowd to a greater level.

Then there are specific decisions, such as the one to feature red poms for fans at the Wisconsin game last year. One of the worst game-day promotion decisions in all of CFB last year. It looked bad on TV to have Iowa fans waving red poms when the opponent was Wisconsin. That was when Brian Ferentz tweeted before the game about the gameday experience. Not a proud day for the Sports Marketing department.

Gotcha. Thanks for the info. I've been to many Iowa games. I've been to many NFL games. I've been to games at Jack Trice (when they are playing Iowa). Outside of that, I haven't been to any other college games. I guess I've just never noticed much of a difference.

Always hated Jack Trice because it's a crappy stadium and the PA announcer constantly says "And that's another Iowa State... FIRST DOWN!!!". It's annoying because they kept getting first downs, and because they feel the need to say it every time. I honestly made a promise to myself that I will never return to that craphole stadium. I was offered a ticket last year to the Iowa game and turned it down for the first time simply because I have no desire to go there. I'd rather watch the game on TV and save myself the headache.
