A Perfect Storm

People complain that IA does the same thing over and over but yesterday was a completely diff game plan than what IA used to do.

You can argue that BF doesn't adjust well mid game, but to say IA doesn't ever change is 1000 % false.
If he changes he does the opposite of what he should do. Lets see, Michigan has the 13th run defense in the conference. Let's abandon the run and try and win the game with a qb that cannot throw over 5 yards with any consistency. Against the 3rd ranked pass defense in the nation. Brilliant plan Brian. Lets keep our best player, who is a freshman on the bench and watch Toren Young and Sargent plod along and miss whatever holes or creases are there. If they do break in the open they will turn a td into a 30 yard run when they get run down from behind. He sucks period. The entire offensive staff sucks. We need the equivalent of a Phil Parker to coach on offense.

I'm not disagreeing that point. The OP was arguing Iowa never changes but it's not true. This past game they got too fancy when it wasn't needed.

Several posters and many Iowa fans wonder why Iowa keeps doing the same things over and over that don't seem to work, under the leadership of KF and his staff. This dynamic is quite frustrating and is grounded in fact over many, many years. So one might ask why? Is it a perfect storm that doesn't lead to a need for change? Reasons...

Iowa is set in the west of the BigTen conference, a place of mediocrity, other than Wisconsin, who is now what Iowa once was. Even behind Wisconsin, you can still look pretty good in the west at just above average.

Kirk & Son exist and thrive in the world of Iowa culture, where the risk and fear of being 5-7 hold more sway than the change and creativity needed to win titles. Best to keep using the "tried and true" ways of Kirkball. Life is filled with changes, but not so much in the world of keep it safe, do the same things over and over, of Kirkball.

Iowa's AD office exists under the power of Kirk...there is no one Kirk really answers to, evidence being the hiring of his inexperienced son at OC, who, it seems, is Kirk 2.0...perfect in the world of Kirk. The AD office offers no pressure...Kirk exists in the world of Kirk.

Iowa, and many others, also live in the world of being OK, but not great, gets you into a pretty good bowl game, in a warm climate and you can appear to have "another great year" when in reality, you folded against the big teams you played and if you can secure a win in the bowl game...well, another winner! Vacations in a warm place for the staff...and of course, raises and bonuses!

Iowa's game plan of doing the same things over and over that just don't seem to work and are well known by opposing coaches is frustrating and appears puzzling on the surface, but not really. Not many surprises in the world of Kirkball.
Well thought out and soooooo true

That's absolutely not true... In the 80s and early 90s Wisconsin sucked and iowa was emerging. Wisky has had a great run but it will end.....stay faithful

Can we quit saying this?
Iowa was never at the level Wisc is right now for as long as they have been.

There is no game Stanley can’t lose. As long as we’re technically in the West Race he will play poorly. I think we’ll crush Nebby since we won’t be playing for anything by then.
Hey now...playing for another coveted Outback Bowl bid is pretty important.

Wisconsin has long ago passed Iowa by, and is better than Iowa has ever been, and seems to sustain it, perhaps more is expected, this the results are better.

thank you, revkev73.

I would not, in my wildest imagination, call Iowa's offensive game plan or execution "fancy"...hideous, pathetic, disgraceful, puzzling, anemic, predictable, yes...but not "fancy"

Speaking of seeing the same things over and over again from the same people over and over again ....
That’s your comeback? That’s equivalent to kirks snort when a reporter actually asks him a tough question once in a blue moon. I set the ferentz o/u at 1.5 this week.

right now I am not worried about Iowa's defense as mich got zero points and 190 yards the last 50 minutes of that game

jNW, Wisky, PSu and Minny have strong defenses.

nebby Illinois and purdue maybe dont have strong defenses.

the iowa coaches need to figure out how to score on offense or this season is 7 or 6 wins. get creative, practice high percentage passes for any down, run the ball

get your play makers involved
And what playmakers do you speak of?

You are talking about two entirely different things. It’s a fact that opposing coaches have repeatedly said iowa has done the same things over and over for years. You know what’s coming. No real surprises so you just have to stop it or out execute and Iowa makes few mistakes. The other is talking about Brian throwing more than his dad. Either way, the overall program philosophy hasn’t changed much and won’t ever either. And jr doesn’t have anywhere near the finesse, ability, patience or smarts as his old man. His shelf life will be short lived and will be the worst thing dad could do for him, but they’ll have to learn the hard way

Oh, it’s the posters.
Even a 12-0 season in ancient history only slightly slowed the roll of the DaHaters.

12-2 actually. Can't ignore the late losses.

It was a fun year but I think most of us recognize that Iowa basically did a really nice job against an easy schedule but got exposed when the competition got stronger.

Iowa football has basically been 7-5/8-4 since Tate to Holloway. The whole thing is redundant: the product and the message boards. One thing is definitely redundant: the offense.

Developing individuals who are ready for the NFL and are drafted by the NFL, but fielding a team that struggles to play like a team against equal or better opponents...seems like a coaching issue, no?

Odds of this problem being identified and remedied?

Probably not, a closed system...which protects itself above all costs.
