Here are the YTD stats for a couple of guys that most Hawk fans recognize:
Pts: Rbds: Assts: FG %: 3Pt %: FT %
Marcus Paige: 7.4 3.0 4.3 32.1 30.8 83.9
Anthony Hubbard: 11.7 6.9 1.6 46.5 26.7 58.3
Here’s how Mike Gessel YTD stats stack up against Paige’s:
Pts: Rbds: Assts: FG %: 3Pt %: FT %
Mike Gesell: 9.1 2.8 2.8 39.7 32.6 74.5
North Carolina currently sits at 17-8 and most experts have them as a bubble team right now. I bet when Marcus signed on to play at UNC he was expecting to be in the Tourney every year.
Iowa currently sits at 17-9 and is at least in the conversation to be a bubble team right now. Gesell has had his share of silly turnovers this season, but overall he has had a very impressive freshman season. Gesell has a very nice jump shot, and if he cuts down on the turnovers and improves his 3 point shooting, I think he has a realistic shot at finishing his Hawk career with over 1,500 points, as well as finishing among the top 5 all time assist leaders at Iowa.
Anthony plays for Morgan State, which has a current record of 9-14. He could have provided another scoring option, but big picture and team chemistry wise, I think it was best that he parted ways with the team.
The Hair currently has his New Mexico team ranked 16th in the country with an overall record of 22-4, as well as having the #3 overall RPI ranking in the country. If they were seeded right now they would probably get a #4 seed with an outside shot at a #3 seed. Far out hypothetical situation to consider: Say New Mexico loses their 1st round game in the Mountain West conference – dropping them to a #5 seed in the tourney. Now say Iowa finishes the regular season 4-1 with the loss being at Indiana. Iowa then wins one game in the Big 10 Tourney, but then loses their second round Big 10 Tourney game. This would put Iowa’s overall record at 22-11 and most likely one of the last 4 teams in the Tourney – maybe getting a #12 seed. Wouldn’t be great if the Hawks 1st round Tourney matchup would be against none other than Stevo and his Lobos? I think Hawk fans would travel in droves to see that matchup. In one game the Hawks could have as many Tournament wins as the Hair generated in his entire “next step†tenure at Iowa. I know that this is a pipedream scenario but wouldn’t be cool? – make it happen NCAA selection committee!
