"A Different Energy"

"There is a different energy and it is good. I'm not sure we have ever had this type of speed."

This is the response my friend close to the football program gave me when I asked how the team was looking.

Lots of coaches and players have something to prove. I like it.

I believe the Kirk Ferentz Era, part II is upon us.

from BTN fall practice tour recap:

Most spirited practice: I say Iowa. This was our first stop on the tour. And I still haven’t forgotten how intense the Hawkeyes were, knocking heads and getting rough and tumble despite practicing in just helmets and shoulder pads. We even saw a “scrum” that began between the offensive and defensive lines. Center James Ferentz is always in the middle of things. I want him on my team.

Is this a gay nightclub discussion thread?

Take this garbage to the chuckle hut!

As for the topic at hand, I think it's only natural to have a different vibe and energy with anything, be it a football program, workplace, etc whenever you've had the kind of turnover in high-ranking personnel that Iowa's had. Couple that with an infusion of younger coaches (Brian Ferentz, Levar Woods, etc) and it's a great recipe for turning things on their head and injecting some newfound energy.

Iowa's coaching staff needed an injection. Nice to catch a few comments from players, etc., that the intensity seems different. To go 13 years with basically the same people in place is an awful long time in any career. Something needed to change. I like the energy of the new coaches and the experience that we add in Davis ... I honestly think this team is going to be better than many expect.

We're gonna be better than some think. It's all about getting off to a 2-0 start, which isn't guaranteed. I hope for close early games, as I think it only helps us.

Depending on source, as much as I've heard new energy, I've heard we've done everything we can, let's go see how it performs. I generally discount things coming from the U's web-site and the athletic department, as they are mostly feel good stories.

Odds makers initial lines right now tell the story.

I'm hoping to travel to MSU, and have us be in the hunt, and be in the game. I think ISU linebackers are the first test, and after that MSU defense is the real test, of our offense at least. The practices I went to, they drilled and scrimmaged throwing underneath quite a lot. The ISU game, given their relative strong LBs will tell me a lot. At least more than what the folks in the rivalry thread think.

Just my random thoughts, waiting for football to start tonight.

One thing you see with Iowa State and their coach, as hard as it is to admit, is tremendous enthusiasm. They have a positive vibe around that team that starts with the coach. It rubs off on the players.

I can see Iowa getting back to that type of enthusiasm with these new coaches and a new system (Iowa used to have that - remember "Break the Rock"?). The attitude is more important than anything else....if the players are having fun and feeling good about themselves and their coaches, it eventually results in victories.

I agree - the Iowa State game is HUGE. The Iowa State players and coaches are extremely cocky and think they are going to beat Iowa in Kinnick this year. We need to prove them wrong.
