6th through 8th in the Big Ten

It's never been THE criteria...that's why there's been a committee, and not a BCS style selection. But it still is the most significant criterion used, and it takes A LOT to overcome a low RPI. Wins against Minnesota and Indiana might do it. Wins against Minnesota and Illinois will NOT...and that's assuming we take care of business against the scrubs and don't get tripped up against Nebraska or Ped State.

Why does everyone keep bringing Illinois up as an example of a quality win? They're sitting at 3-7 and 9th place in the conference, RIGHT NOW, and 3 of their remaining games are against ranked teams on the road. They are NOT a good team.

You can't discount who Illinois has beaten. They are a good team just inconsistent. IMO Illinois is neither a good win nor a bad loss in the big picture. In the short-term its a bad loss.

It'll be a bad loss by the time we play them in March. They're not an "inconsistent" team...they're a team that's lucky to have won a game in the past month because they've been EXPOSED in the B1G.

You keep bringing up RPI but argue Illinois is not a quality win? They have an RPI in the 30s with wins over some highly ranked teams.

You think that will still be the case on March 5th? Not unless they have as drastic a turnaround as we need to go dancing.

You look at their upcoming schedule? They might be coming to Carver having won 4 of their last 5. It is unlikely they will fall out of the top 50 RPI and no way they fall out of the top 100. If Iowa beats them it will be considered a quality win.

They've lost to 4 of the teams they play before us; what makes you think it will be different this time, especially when 3 of those 4 are on the road? Beating Ped State or Nebraska won't make up for the hit to RPI that losses to Michigan and Minnesota will cause...and if they lose to Ped State or Nebraska or NW or Purdue??? Their RPI will suffer big time.

For those that think if it comes down to IA and IL, some things to ponder. It's in the math. If it comes down to one or the other and if IL is within 2 games of IA in B1G and maybe 3 if a better showing in the tourney. With a better showing in the tourney, IL gets in with only 4 more wins in B1G regular seasons even if Iowa wins 11 without a big win over a top 25. Iowa aside from taking care of business needs to beat Indiana or 2 MN's/WI's or better in B1G tourney unless there aren't a lot of Cinderella teams that make it. IL can post a win resume with anyone. They can post a SOS with anyone. Iowa paid for the weak early schedule and weren't ready for the B1G.

Best wins for a number of top teams. IL is right in there with them and better. Compares worst losses between IL and IA. Compares SOS.

Losing at Minnesota or at Michigan will have minimal effect on their RPI. They have Nebraska, PennSt, and Purdue all at home before they play Iowa. Even if they lose at Northwestern it will not be a bad loss.

Im beginning to think the committee will have no problem putting 8 Big Ten teams in if Iowa gets to 10 wins, Illinois might get in with 8 wins, and Minnesota gets in with 9 wins.

I agree! The BTT is going to be awesome this year. This is the best I have seen the B1G from top to bottom in a long time.

Illinois would have 22 wins, 5 wins over ranked teams
Iowa would have 21 wins and finish in 6th in the Best conference with a winning record
Minnesota would have 21 wins, .500 in the best conference and an RPI in the top 30's

I may be smoking something, but it isnt effecting my knowledge...

Illinois got another big win tonight...probably due to Williams being out hurt. I could see both Illinois and Minnesota ending up at 8-10 now...assuming we sweep both. If we have 10 and a BTT win and they both have 8 I think the Big Ten gets a record 8 bids. Everyone in the country knows our conference is absolutely LOADED this year. And again...we would be 2-1 against 2 teams sitting behind us in the standings with the 1 loss being by 3 points. We have to win the games we're supposed to win...all but Indiana. If we do anything less I won't be complaining if Iowa isn't dancing.

B1G is NOT, repeat, NOT getting 8 teams in. Jeebus.

Not really, Minnesota just isn't as good as everyone's made them out to be.

Hate to say it, but outside of the top 4 teams, the B1G is pretty mediocre.

Big East got 9 in last year. Obviously 9 out of 16 isnt as impressive as 8 of 12

The Big Ten lost only 1 game to the Big 12 (OSU vs KU), and won the ACC/Big Ten tournament. Do you care to show any stats or evidence of just how mediocre the Big Ten is???
