5 Schools Apply for WAC Membership

The Montana add makes sense. They are D-1 in hoops (Big Sky) anyway. The Adams Center rocks in basketball and their football stadium is beautiful - plus they are a FCS power and draw good crowds to there home games (I'd guess 25k+). They will struggle early but I always thought they could make this move.

Montana is actually a good football school. They won the FCS championship a year or two ago, and usually do fairly well. Seattle is almost strictly Bball, UTSA wants to be the next Houston/TCU, and TX State is just bad at everything...the only good thing I can see about these schools is WAC gets into Texas for recruiting, and Montana is as i said, not bad at football. Don't know about other sports, but we'll see.

Non-Existant now? It was terrible before and always will be. Boise St doesnt make a conference.

Nevada is building a program in football (ranked 25th) and basketball (they beat us out for a recruit this year). The population of that state has also grown significantly over the last 20 years. It is quickly becoming a legit national state university.

Would think the MWC would be thinking about snatching them up as well. Hard to believe they would play with the UTSA's of the world. Fresno State is also somewhat legit, but they have Fresno in their name, so...

However, taking those teams out of the equation, I would see the remaining teams as legit partners with the proposed teams. Now, do I think it is FBS worthy?...

U of Texas-San Antonio will eventually be a great football program. They are just getting started with a football program. Larry Coker is their coach. I think being in San Antonio is going to be huge. Watch them join the Big 12 in about 5 years.

You do know Nevada already accepted an invite to the Mountain West, right?

No, I only heard Boise.

Okay, I just looked. Nevada and Fresno and now reportedly working on a deal to get Houston. That is a good conference if that could happen.

Even though the Utah loss was big. Can't believe Utah State said no. Weird.

Now they need to get that television network problem worked out.

Southwest Texas, I mean Texas State made the semi-finals in FCS a few years ago and would give the WAC some of the Austin market. Big party school so if they made the jump to FBS the tailgates could become pretty epic. Interesting that they're hinging their plans on these schools making the jump to FBS.

Totally expected to see some of the Big Texas schools like KU, KSU, and ISU being in there.

yeah...the texas state armadillos with the amazing paul blake at quarterback. they did beat texas in their last game so obviously there's some talent there

The University of Denver is a decent enough basketball program. They've had better years, and they could get better again. But for DU, it's a basketball-only move since they don't have football and the WAC doesn't cover a lot of the other sports they play (hockey, lacrosse, etc).

Seattle is bball only too i think, i dont know of them having a fb program. tx state has one and tx-sa is starting one, but the WAC will be even less relevant than normal..though Montana is a very good fb program

Those are my thoughts as well. If you add Houston, Boise State, Nevada, and Fresno State to the MWC....I'd be OK with them getting an autobid. That would be a strong league.

BYU is certainly setting themselves up for some serious competition AND they are 1-3 this year. They may just fade to complete oblivion...

That would be a strong league.

The question becomes though: do they STAY a strong league? Does a Boise St or TCU remain a strong team? Or do they pretty much fade like a Hawaii (a couple of years ago) and so many others who got a good year or two but could not sustain it?
