That's the average yards per pass completion currently for Iowa. Currently last in the BIG. Amazing stat. Sad but true. Hopefully Iowa can better this in weeks to come. I mean seriously, WTF!!! 5 yds a completion!??

Come on man, it is basically 6 yard per completion. I know, I know, not a big deal. But you are right for a pro style offense to have such low passing stats is opposite of the type of offense they have. They need to get some dynamics into the passing game.
 
Keep in mind moast passes are thrown 3 yards behind teh LOS, so teh avg. should be moar like 8.8, adjusted for inflation.

In fantasy it's common to award 3 points for passing touchdowns instead of 6 - 50%. So we should add 50% of the yardage the horizontal pass travels as well. I think that gets us up to like a 20 yd average, very nice!

Actually it's 4 points in most leagues.
 
Actually, it is 5.8 yards per passimg attempt. Good for a tie for 118th in Division I.

In contrast, Weisman is averaging 6.3 yards per rushing attempt.
 
So does this mean that we should be running on the 2nd and longs and looking to the passing game on "short" downs?

You don't even have that right. It's 5.8 yards per ATTEMPT. It's a useless stat anyway because you can only get yards if you complete a pass. His yards per completion is 10.1. It's still near the bottom of the conference, but when the average of the top 10 guys (the only amount that have significant snaps) is 12.6, why worry about an extra two yards a pass?

the effectiveness of a passing game. It's frankly a minor miracle that Iowa is at 4-2 with a passing attack that pathetic.

A couple of yards per pass attempt doesn't seem like a lot, but it is huge. If both teams throw 35 passes in a game, if one team averages 5.8 yards per attempt (Iowa) and another averages 9.5 yards per attempt (Stave for Wisconsin) that comes out to 130 more yards for Wisconsin in our example. To date, the Iowa defense has been lights out against the pass (giving up just 6.5 yards per attempt), which has allowed Iowa to be in every game and win 4 of them. The elite defenses like Alabama, LSU and FSU are giving up under 5 yards per pass attempt, but Iowa's defense to date has been good.

Agreed primarily because since we're throwing shorter passes the percentage should go up. With essentially a horizontal passing game tere's no reason he shouldn't be around the 70% mark.
