I hate to say it but patriotism is a nostalgic afterthought for most Americans these days. Our Government is a cesspool and can not be trusted. Our freedom is diminished year by year with more laws and censorship. America hardly stands for what it used to and we are witnessing the erosion of the memory of our proud past. What we choose to focus on is the negative.

My aunt passed away a few years ago and was interred at the same cemetery in Maryland that FS Key was laid to rest. I remember thinking how cool it was that she was in the same cemetery as he was in. Then I found out what a racist he was and no longer think it's cool. Point is, it's 99.9% likely Kaep didn't know it either.
We do know that he himself said his protest was against his perception of police brutality vs. people of color and problems of racial disparity. We know he was raised by two adopted white parents who condemned his stance on the anthem.
Nobody ever knows 100% what another person thinks or the life he has led before he/she takes some stance but we can have a pretty good idea.
All that said, he has the right to protest any way he wants. Most of the rest of the country doesn't think like students at Berkeley.

. As a 49er fan I couldn’t be happier that the Kaeprnick days are done. To me the standing/not standing for anthem was just a non issue. Regardless of what side of that you are on your not changing anyones mind to go the other way on it. The guy was just a bad qb. He could run and make the occasional play here and there. But his play as a passer was poor-mediocre. All you need to know is Gabbert had beaten him out for a while… And he’s terrible. Which is weird because physically he’s an athletic big guy too. They both just can’t make completable passes or read defenses. Making none of their other talents matter…
Getting rid of Baalke was even bigger then dumping Kaepernick. To me he was the main problem. He’d been there too long and had taken advantage of the free reign he’d had to make bad decisions. The fact they have CJ and Kittle is total gravy to the fact they’ve gotten a couple new guys Lynch & Shanahan running the show that seem to know what they’re doing and have a plan. I think Kittle will be right in the mix for playing time early on. I hope CJ makes a good first impression in the preseason so he can maybe be their QB of the future.

I could give a chit if the guy sits or stands as it doesn't change my feelings or views. It was merely a light joke and to point that the media and many others make too big a deal of it. If they would not cover it, it would never be an issue and hardly known he was doing it. This is a free country, but I feel the guy got way too much pub and for the wrong reason. I enjoyed all responses as it showed some are really too invested in the situation.
I’m with you. It didn’t surprise me that so many people were so crazy about it one way or the other but I sure didn’t care. Why sports has to try mixing patriotism and politics is just a bad mix. I thought the league showed where they stood when it came out that they were down with the services using tax dollars to pay for their fly overs and what not.. I mean somebody pretty high up had to be green lighting that. So if stuff like that is going on who is the league to say if a guy can’t protest or do whatever he wants during national anthem? They had to be hands off with that.
I watch sports for the entertainment side of things. If the people I’m watching are good guys along with being good players then all the better. That said I’m well aware there are guys that slap their gfs around. Throw money at strippers, drink and drive, do pot and other drugs. Cheat on their wives, skip out on child support etc etc etc. There’d be no team college or pro to root for if you were to hold some moral high ground card over them all.
I’m not a guy that’ll say I won’t watch the 49ers due to Kaepernicks antics. Them stinking lately and not being any good sure would…

Comparing a grown ass man, who is paid to be a professional, and who has a national spotlight (people seem to forget he played in a Super bowl and two NFC Championships), to some drunk sorority girl at 10:30 on a Saturday morning is absurd (the same goes for couch-sitters). The former is a deliberate choice to use said platform to make a political statement, the latter is just stupidity, lack of respect, and a general lack of awareness of the world.
Having said that, I have no problem with what Kap did. This is because I just don't care, like at all. Both sides of the aisle are overly sensitive to this kind of shit nowadays. I'm sick of every single day "so-and-so said/did this horribly offensive thing, omg!!" and it going viral. Then the next day it's completely forgotten and someone else is doing something offensive. It just never ends.

The problem is the hypocrisy in the league and on this board. You say the league shouldn't be moralizing. Okay then what about how the league gets involved in state politics? Georgia and Arizona two recent examples. Threatening them unless they behaved in a way suitable to the NFL.
You also say that character shouldn't matter. So what about Hawkeye message boards where people say, "I'm good with 7 wins cuz our coach is of higher character than other coaches." I guess then it is okay for character to matter and to use character as the reason someone supports the program. You don't think character matters to Kirk Ferentz when recruiting kids?

For the record those that take a moral high ground stand on things is fine by me if they are consistent and not all hypocritical about it. More power to them. Good luck finding the perfect team to follow though...
I think character does matter to KF when recruiting to an extent. But how much can these coaches learn about a HS kid? Then to predict how they'll act once they come to campus with way more free time away from mommy and daddy is a total crap shoot.
My take on the patriotism thing is it does nothing for me. I don't see the need to do it. I watch games to be entertained not be all patriotic. I can see through their reasoning for doing it as being profitable as opposed to the noble gesture of just being patriotic. That doesn't mean it's wrong to do necessarily. They can do it if they want to. Way more people probably like it than not so it's why they do it I'm sure. Just because I'm not down with it doesn't mean I won't continue watching. It's not that big of a deal.

Kap is all over the place with his beliefs that you just can't close your eyes and give him your blanket support. On the contrary, "this country has given him so much" argument is just as bad because he is" fortunate" he is not allowed to have life experiences? opinions?
