and losses leaderIf KF and HF are close, you gotta go with the all-time Big Ten wins leader.
Hayden Fry is definitively the goat.Definitely agree with Phil over Norm. KF actually has a slight advantage in winning percentage 62.5%/56% and both have similar bowl record win percentages, but KF has been to 3 more bowls. (Hayden has a 6-7 record and KF a 10-11 record). So I think with Hayden vs KF, it's statistically a pick'em in my opinion. I enjoyed Hayden and he is definitely held in high regard. But I'm a KF guy.
Hayden had more of a flair for that southern charm and "aww shucks" persona. But the man was a genius in many ways under the cover of appearing to be somewhat of a country bumpkin. KF probably lacked that personality (especially with the media).
But it's overall hard to even pick. Somewhat how some divide up the GOAT convo in the NBA based upon eras. Incidentally, Jordan is the GOAT in my world. LOL. But we have been blessed with two legendary coaches for the last 46 years. That I think we can all agree on.
Harbaugh did the same thing and we still won.Schembechler taped meat market wrapping paper on the walls of the visitors locker room in an effort to negate the pink effect. A clear Fry psyop victory.
KF's final game he should wear the hat, Blu-Blockers, a Starter jacket, white Dockers, and Puma shoes. Has to be Puma shoes. It's a close debate, but I vote Fry just on fashion sense alone. The white shoes, the mustache, the aviators. Iconic. Kirk is pretty blasé in his khakis or sweatpants.
Most people not from here still spell it either o-h-i-o or i-d-a-h-o.Fry had the clear colloquial advantage - scratch where it itches; cold bowl of chili; high porch picnic etc - yet KF has my favorite quote: Iowa, great colors, easy to spell.
Agreed with one exception. KFz definitely inherited a team down on talent, but the program was not "a mess". That's what it was in 1979 when Hayden took over.No way to solve this debate. But, it is fun to applaud and appreciate both. Fry took us from the ashes and made us a second tier conference team that was nationally relevant from time to time. KF inherited a mess as the closet was pretty bare when he took over, and within three years had us contending for conference and national titles. Is it harder to build something from nothing, or take something and make it better? Both are laudable. KF has the numbers, Fry was such a fan favorite coach, both did amazing things. Iowa fans have been damn lucky for closing in on 50 years.
